Tea tree worked for me so far, but I guess it isn't for everyone. Might have to do with what concentration was used or other specifics. All I know is that mixing the two together keeps them away from me without any noticeable side effects.

and tea tree oil also keeps you awake. i learned that the hard way. i think it's a natural stimulant. not really what you need in the middle of a sleep-deprived bed bug infestation!

verysad,

Please read my last comment to moonchill. Tea tree on your skin will no more keep you from being bitten than lavender. I tried that too.

See this FAQ on natural remedies for bed bugs:

moonchill,

Very brief effect, if any.

I tried it. It does help you sleep a bit better (because it relaxes you).

But you really do have to kill them.

Becareful not to repel then right out of the room they are in and into other rooms of the house.

As I general rule I insist that no repellent or amature use products are used in properties that I am working in. Its one of our hard limits and can result in clients being advised to seek solutions elsewhere.

As I often say to people if there was a product that worked and I could sell to people then I would not be going out and treating places I would dial in from a yacht somewhere and watch the web counter go around and around.

The cedar oil spray is the only product that I am aware of that is labeled for bed bugs and claims to be safe to apply directly to the skin of humans & pets.

Still I doubt it would be 100% effective as a bed bug repellent in the long run since hunger is a powerful drive for bed bugs & the cedar oil spray is primarily a contact killer. I don't believe that its use as a repellent has been evaluated by anyone.

It does work for short periods of time as a mosquito repellent, but it needs to be reapplied more frequently than DEET products.

When I was battling bb about 10 years ago, I lived in very buggy Maine and everyone swore by Avon's skin-so-soft to repell mosquitos and black flies. I would slather up with skin-so-soft before bed and was pretty much left alone.
CONS:
-slimey sheets that never really feel clean
PROS:
-no BB bites!
-no blood spots on sheets
-very soft skin

You may be allergic to dead bed bugs so by rubbing dead bugs on your skin may be the wrong thing to do. If you do decide to do this than please keep us posted on the results.

There are some repellents that will work but as with mosquitoes they would have to be reapplied in the course of several hours. Also repellents are designed for limited
use on unprotected areas and to be washed off or wear off. With bbs you would be using it nightly and have your body, face hands etc. continually exposed to it. Not a good idea DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!
