So I started experience ungodly itching about 3+ weeks ago maybe even 5... and I haven't thought much of it till the last week and a half and the itching is just AWFUL! I've been waking up between 3-6am almost every night for the past how ever many weeks its been. The itching is on my whole body but super intense, when I wake up in the middle of the night and throughout the day, on my inner thighs, genitals, and butt. The itching is also on my chest (pecks area) portions of my arms, hands, wrists, and waist line/belly button. I haven't looked for bugs yet but will first thing when I get home from my fathers (don't worry I washed all the stuff I brought with me as to not spread it) I might be able to upload pictures tomorrow as well. But if anyone has any advice or two cents it would be greatly appreciated as I can't continue like this; It's my last semester in highschool and I need sleep for track and school. Thanks! -dylan

I noticed bug bites on my upper leg and thigh about 2 days ago. Didn't think very much of it, to be honest, although they did itch like hell. Noticed a few more yesterday morning and still didn't think much of it... until I went home (well, my parents' house) and mentioned it to my mother who thought they were scabies. That's what freaked me out. So I went and researched and... well, I think I'd rather have scabies because bed bugs seem like such an absolute hassle for EVERYONE and everything I come to contact with. The bites are extremely similar to the pictures as well as the clusters of 3 or 4.

I'm currently still at my parents' home. Absolutely freaked and it's about 1 in the morning; I can't even think about sleeping. Completely changed the bedsheets here and in the process of washing/drying clothes I've brought from the apt. I currently live in (I'm a college student) as well as my laundry and backpack. I also feel like I might contaminate this house!

Perhaps I'm freaking out too much, I haven't even been back to the apt. to check around for these bugs, but still... I'm complete and utterly terrified of what I might find there. And I can't sleep.

This is going to be absolutely humiliating to address this with my roommates as well as the apartment management.

I have a small collection on DVD of those. It goes along with many of the bed bug items I have. =) I even have bed bug candy and magazine prints dating back to the 30's. Chemical bottles and boxes of pesticide from as far back as 1920

So, I get one of those ubiquitous promos from the video by mail service (which shall remain nameless). The risk of BB transmission via this service has been discussed and I once read an article about how a lot if their processing is manual. Even showed pics of people sorting DVDs in corrugated cardboard boxes (gasp!).

I wanted to get a sense of what "the rest of the world" (with all due respect to my fellow bedbuggers) has to say about this issue, so I Googled "netflix" (OK, I named it) and "bedbugs".

Skipping over the links to this site, I came across this gem:

Bedbug Bible Gang: God's Little Heroes

In this collection of episodes from the animated children's show, Sparky, Buzzer and the rest of the Bedbug Bible Gang share their favorite tales about pint-size heroes. The whimsical bugs sing and dance their way…

Released 2006

http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Bedbug_Bible_Gang_God_s_Little_Heroes/70053297
…Which proves that you can get bedbugs from the DVD service, but they're the clueless kind.
:)

Hello Serenity,

I am really sorry about your situation and really feel for you. I had a friend who was suicidal and killed herself this past summer. We all tried to be there for her so I understand the weight this has on your life. I am currently dealing with my own infestation so I can also appreciate how much work it is to prepare for the treatments and the stress of living in an infested dwelling.

It might seem like hard work right now but things should get better with the treatments (assuming a competent PCO).

Your heart and priorities are in the right place. your gf.

I would recommend using encasements which have been designed and tested to keep bed bugs in, or out. Of particular concern is the zipper end stop. It may have gaps which allow bed bugs to pass through, or it may come open. Protect-a-bed AllerZip and MattressSafe are designed to prevent that.

The description of the encasement you link to says,

"100% cotton terry surface and polyurethane backing inhibits allergy-causing dust mites, bed bugs, and bacteria from living in your mattress"

That's really not very convincing. I'd want to see test data showing the items construction keeps bed bugs from getting in or out of the seams and zipper end stop.

Thanks cilecto.

A clarification: it took several pros because I sent a not great photo to a PCO who told me it looked like a bed bug but he couldn't absolutely do a positive id since it was through a picture using a cell phone camera. Her roommate really wanted to send the samples to Harvard for ID which I personally thought was unnecessary because it seemed like her dead bug and my dead bug were definitely bed bugs. My gf is on the top floor of her building so there are no units above. I have no idea if the bug I saw on the ceiling is a bed bug or not.

Thanks for your suggestions and sympathy. I think the panic you are feeling from my post is more about the big picture (her mental health and suicidality) - and not just the bed bug situation. For some reason when I click on your link I only see a comment box and the title of the thread, not the actual posts?

I saw this one on the wall of my bedroom.. and oddly enough another one in my kitchen.

My next door neighbors reported they had bedbugs to our landlord, and they have come in twice to check for bugs in all surrounding apartments. They never reported seeing anything to me, and I've never seen fecal matter on my sheets or casings. No noticeable bites..

Is that a bedbug? I'm supposed to move in 2 weeks, so I want to act fast and thorough and try and eradicate this before I move. Help!

Some items in a dryer might be bunched up so tight that they're insulated from the heat, protecting an egg.

Person opening or packing bag could shed a bug into the bag.

Bugs can lurk in the opening of a bag (outside the knot, tie or zip) and fall in on opening.

Large ziplocs sometimes break open at the pleats.

Does anyone have any suggestions on finding a good company in the Philly or NJ areas that do this?

Next week I am having my 1st treatment for bed bugs in my apartment and I'm lucky in that my building management takes care of all the costs for the PCO, however, I really want to invest in the encasements for both the mattress and box spring just to be safe for any future problems. I've looked at the better known brands (Protect-A-Bed, etc), but they're pretty expensive. I found this 1 on Amazon with 2 great reviews, but wanted to check if anyone here has used it before. The price is a lot more affordable and between having to purchase these covers and the cost of all the laundry I will be doing in the next few weeks, it's going to start adding up pretty fast!

Well this morning I had the exterminator come to check my apartment, and after looking through my bed was finally able to find droppings on the bottom of my box spring. He said usually he can find some sort of evidence almost immediately if there's an infestation, but it took him a while to notice anything on my bed and what he did find was a small area, so he thinks it should be fairly easy to treat at get rid of them.

I'm hoping to make my appointment for the 1st treatment early next week, then another the following week to get it taken care of as soon as possible. They gave me a long list of precautions to take...about clothes washing, taking pets out for a min of 4 hours, etc. Since I'm now going to have to wash all of my clothes and bedding, I'm just imagining the time and extra money I'm going to spend getting it all done. My building is paying for the exterminator, but I was just wondering if anyone thinks it would be possible to get my building management to cover the cost of the all of the laundry?

I'm trying to think positive that it really will be a simple treatment and will fully get rid of them right away, but I'm already dreading having to take all this time off of work and take my 2 cats to a friend's apartment for the days of treatments. Keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well, especially after reading story after story other people have posted where they had to go through months and months of this.

Hi All,

I started receiving mosquito type bites on my neck and knuckles about two weeks ago in my one bedroom apartment. The weather here in NYC was still in the mid to upper 40s at that time and although I sleep with the windows open I did not believe it to be a mosquito so early in the season. I closed my windows since that night and have not noticed any new bites. My mattress shows no signs of bed bugs, eggs, etc however my sheets have these small brown lines that look like a marker was used lightly on them. This of course has made me believe I do have bed bugs and I now feel bites all the time although I haven't seen any new evidence besides one bite on my neck (not a series of 2 or 3). I changed the sheets on Monday, vacuumed everything, and woke up Tuesday morning with the same brown markings. Again, I see nothing on the mattress or the box spring. I hired a K9 team to come to my apartment this morning and as I had not discovered this forum until after the visit, I probably did not make the best selection. The dog sat once on the carpet in my living room, twice on the wood flooring in the living room (2 different spots), and once on the wood flooring in my bedroom. The dog "froze" near my box spring indicating the potential for bed bugs there as well though as the handler described they were not as developed as the ones on the rug and floor. Curiously enough the mattress, sheets, etc triggered no response nor did the vacum which was used on the same rugs and floor a day earlier (with the dirt still inside). I did not ask them to do a visual confirmation as I had not yet read the forum. I called them back and asked if they could come back to visually inspect the areas where the dog detected bed bugs. They told me that the dog is properly trained and that they most likely would not be able to show me anything on the rug or wood floor. They even confirmed that they did not think the markings were indicative of feces. However, they want to come back tomorrow to spray the floors, rugs, couch, box spring, and mattress as well as the tables on the rug for a very steep price. In addition, they want to use Cryo on my headboard. Right now the only visual evidence I've seen are the brown streaks on the sheets and the few "mosquito" bites I have / had. I've attached the pictures to the bottom of this message and I would really appreciate any advice you can provide after reading about my situation.

Hi,

Blood spots on sheets can be an indication of a problem but they are not a definitive sign of a bed bug infestation as there are many other causes.

A few years ago I wrote a PDF that outlines the different types of blood spots and how to determine if they are related to bed bugs which can be found here:

http://www.bed-bugs.co.uk/DB2/bloodspotsPP.pdf

Although they can be a useful indication they are not reliable and infestations can ONLY be confirmed through the identification of:

Live samples

Cast skins

Faecal traces

To help illustrate this please check out:

Hello,
From what I understand, it is normal to continue getting bit for a few days after treatment, especially the first or second treatment. It takes time for the pesticides to take full effect. Most PCO's recommend 3 treatments 2 weeks apart, but sometimes 2 treatments are sufficient. Call the PCO and see what he/she says, but don't panic, I'm pretty sure that's normal.

It's not that I have an objection to the bags. I will be using nuvan strips in the trunk of my car anyway, because I had a lot of clothes in my trunk, and my roommate borrowed my car to move a lot of dirty (and potentially infested) laundry. So I figured that as long as I'm Nuvan-ing the trunk, I might as well stick a couple of hard-to-clean items in it.

hi florida

can i ask why not put the ddvp strips in garbage bags? i have no idea if it would or wouldn't successfully treat stuff in a car trunk - on the one hand, small enclosed space =i would think so, but i don't know how airtight a trunk is, how much air space/circulation around your stuff there would be, whether the bugs or ddvp vapors could get from your trunk to other parts of your car, etc.
so, i'd go with bags were i you. reasonably airtight if sealed correctly, also nowhere to run for the bugs, and its allowable on the label for treatment.
for those who know me, it may seem hypocritical of me to be saying staying "on label" is important - but seriously, given your situation is exactly the situation appropriate to label approved bag treatment (in that, you have stuff that fits in bags) i would go with that. why the hesitation to use bags?

either way, best of luck with it. as for overkill, i'm of the mind that its better to be paranoid than take a chance. bag treatment is relatively inexpensive and pretty quick and easy compared to some others. but obviously, only you know your own risk tolerance and what is or isn't too much of a pain in the butt to do for bug security.
i can't remember, are you moving? if you are -i would definitely try to decontaminate all my belongings before taking them to a new place.

This is not unusual. Knowledgeable and experienced pros will know how to get rid of bed bugs with steam + dusts, or with thermal (if your budget extends to it and it's appropriate in your situation) or other methods safe for you.

I'm in the Los Angeles area and have found it difficult to find someone who can adequately tell me what I should do given my situation. One company came out and told me the issue was not severe and that thermal/heat would work, but that they would also recommend chemical. I think I recall "PHS" written on the proposal. Any ideas on what products I should ask of the PCO. I get the sense that most of the companies I am dealing with are not fully-experienced in the tx of bed bugs.

Hi everyone. I am just praying that someone with experience can give me advice. I am a young woman who has been living at my parent's home in my own bedroom in the basement. My mom came home from a trip to Paris three days ago and I put her suitcase in my closet. Now, last night, I was lying in bed and felt itchy and when I checked my leg, there was a red rash and white bump which seemed to be a bite. I am a bit of a hypochondriac (and I have a waterbug phobia) so I take all my reactions to everything with a grain of crazy salt. Nevertheless, I have bed-bug safe encasements on my mattress and box-spring and I have borax around my room perimeter (for the various icky bugs one finds in basements). In the morning, I threw all my bedclothes in the dryer on hot, unzipped the encasements and did a visual inspection. I found no casings, no live bugs, and no dead bugs. I found one thing that could be a bug leg (again could be the crazy talking). I found no blood or poo. It could be one of the other bugs in the basement (a centipede perhaps?) or maybe it is in the early stages? It could possibly also be the new detergent I used, which I may be allergic too (although this really did look like a bite). Ok, so now that I see all this written, I know I am being crazy paranoid, but still...what do you guys recommend? Should I wait a week and see if I keep getting bitten? Should I get a dog to inspect? A person?

Ok, this is what I want to do- I have a lot of stuff like records, lamps, shoes, etc. that I want to be sure of. Is it feasible to place items in the trunk of the car with a Nuvan strip in order to
"decontaminate" them? It wouldn't be airtight like a garbage bag, of course, but since it's a car there's no where for them to run and hide. Would this work?

Also, is it overkill? I've only ever seen one bedbug in my apartment, and a PCO has come twice to look at the house and detected absolutely no signs of bedbugs. (I had been getting bit about once every 6 weeks for 7 months or so until I found it). Does this mean there probably aren't any (we did clean very thoroughly before he came) or does this mean they are probably harboring in more unusual places (books, records, shoes, etc) ?

I'd appreciate any input, thanks!
