Sorry your family is dealing with this problem.

I am assuming you got your bed bug diagnosis confirmed by someone who can ID this bug, but just in case, consider posting a photo here.

Not only does it reassure everyone that we're on the same page, but if the image is very clear, experts here may be able to rule out closely related species like bat bugs which may look very similar to most of us. (The clearer the shot, the better.)

Also, remember two things:
A. Bed bugs don't hang out with access to people and not bite for two months.
B. Some people don't react to bed bug bites. Your own reactions may also vary.

So I read this scenario you describe as having three possibilities. Either

(1) Your mom got rid of every last bed bug two months ago, in which case you or someone else has brought them into your home again (or they walked in from an attached neighbor). You have to consider carefully whether you have a continued source of exposure.

(2) Your mom did not get rid of every last bed bug two months ago, and they have continued biting since then. They could have bitten you without you reacting (for example, if you reacted to lots of bed bug bites prreviously but not so much to one or a few, which is possible), or they could have bitten someone else during those two months without that person reacting. Someone else could even have bed bugs in their room all this time and have had no idea.

It's really hard to get rid of every bed bug in one treatment. So it's possible your mom vastly reduced the population but did not eliminate it so it sprang up again.

(3) A bed bug was sealed up in an airtight container, and therefore had no access to people, and survived for the two months, upon which it was released from the container and is now biting you again. This doesn't seem very likely, but isn't unheard of (for example: bed bug in comforter, comforter stored in large sealed plastic bag, brought out later, bites reappear).

I'd put my money on #1 or #2.

It's worth considering the issues above, because you need to make sure you eliminate all bed bugs from your home (which may not just include your room) and you need to make sure you don't reintroduce them.

Some questions:

Do you have attached neighbors?

Any idea where the bed bugs came from?

Are you renting and if so, do you know what the local laws say in terms of whether landlords pay for pest control? If your family is entitled to professional treatment, then this is the best route for getting rid of the problem.

Note I am not a pest pro and these are just my thoughts and suggestions. I am sure you will get more feedback tomorrow!

We can't judge how likely it is that your bed bugs are gone, because we don't know how many you had, or where they were, or how long they were there, etc.

If all the bed bugs were killed or removed, then of course it is possible for them to be gone.
It's also possible you did not find and kill them all and that you still have bed bugs.

Monitors may help you determine this. There are good resources under Comprehensive Guides in the Resources page -- these may help you learn more about how to find signs of bed bugs.

Also, if you have no attached neighbors and have no idea how you got bed bugs, I would consider carefully whether your son may have been exposed at a friend's or relative's home, at daycare or school, or somewhere else. If the problem was most serious in his room, then this may be where they were first brought in. You want to try and figure this out so you can avoid bringing more bed bugs in.

About a year ago, I found a strange flat bug during the day on my floor and asked my mom if it was a tick. She said it wasn't but she didn't know what it was, so I flushed it. That winter I was letting my cat rub against my face at my computer desk while taking a picture. I noticed a spot on my face, picked it off and it was a bug. I was grossed out and flung it off. Just about a month after that I went to a friend's mom's apartment and found one on the sleeve of my hoodie. No one knew what it was then either.
A month or two after that, I had gotten an itch on my leg during the day. So I took off my sweatpants and found one hiding out in the pant leg. My boyfriend inspected it but flushed it. Nobody knew what they were so I did some research. When I found out it was bed bugs, everyone, especially my mom was in denial. But only a few weeks later I woke up with bite marks on my breast and found a bed bug trapped under my breast. I took pictures and showed my mom in the morning. We knew I had bed bugs.
While I was gone for a couple days, my mom cleaned my room from head to toe looking for them. She found them on my dresser and computer stand, the opposite side of my bedroom from my bed. She killed all she could find and washed my bedding and swept my floor. She also took a bed bug spray to the trim around my room. All was well for about two months. Besides the one we had found alive by the door to my room, I hadn't been getting bit.
Until last night. I woke up to two itches on my leg. Tonight before sleep, my mom vaccumed around the perimeter of my room and we searched my bed for the bed bug. We found a couple dead ones behind my dresser but none elsewhere. I just woke up a couple hours ago with a bite on my arm....
I just want this problem to be over. I hate being a feast and itching like mad... Can anyone help me?

Okay, well, if I understand rightly, you only found bed bugs in your son's bed area. Did you look elsewhere?

It's hard for us to know if any bed bugs are still present. You should consider using a monitoring system of some kind to try and determine this.

While your son reacted to bed bug bites, they aren't the best indicator about whether the problem persists-- he may not react if they're present in small numbers; he may continue reacting if exposed somewhere outside the home to bed bugs, which seems likely given they were found in his bed. And others may have been bitten and not reacted so you can't be sure there aren't bed bugs elsewhere in the home. Have all beds and upholstered seats been inspected carefully? There may be signs in walls, baseboard areas, and other locations also. Ideally, you have an experienced inspector spend some time inspecting. You may be able to do this yourself if you do your research first.

Monitors can help determine this. There are FAQs linked from the detection FAQs and Useful Stuff page about them.

For the benefit of others reading this, throwing out and destroying (burning) furniture is generally not required and not recommended.

I'm not an expert, but I've been here a while, for what it's worth.

I understand about the phone issues but keep in mind, the people here who answer questions are doing so in their free time, and they are more likely to respond if posts are easy to read, formatted in the normal way (in terms of capitalization, spelling, etc.) and separated into sentences and paragraphs. It also attracts more attention if the title says a bit more about the topic of your post.

It's just hard to read online so you have to kind of help people out. It may help to write from a computer in future if possible so you have more control.

I hope those suggestions are helpful in future! :-)

I Called A Pco, They Said Frankly A Lot Of Us Don't Know Much About Bed Bugs, Were Just Learning.

I think it might be safe to say that was true of many PMPs back in the day. When this website started in 2006, we heard about more clueless pest control companies.

However, it was true then and is even more true today-- the information is out there and if your PCO doesn't know much about bed bugs, s/he's not trying hard enough and you should choose someone else.

I understand you have an ongoing contract-- my understanding is often these don't include bed bugs since they can be more labor-intensive.

If they are covered, IMHO, having paid for the work, you have a right to have someone do the work who knows more than someone who has read a bit about bed bugs online (I hope you don't take offense at that characterization as it's not my intention).

My ConTracted Pco (Contract Of Ants And HouseHoldBugs) Came For His Visit, And I Mentioned Bed Bugs, We Looked And Talked I Had Mentioned DE. He Used A Little Drone Dust, And Mentioned Or Stated Rather That I Knew More About Bed Bugs Than He Did.

I appreciate his honesty, but per my comments above it's not a good sign.

I Saw TheM Again Despite What I Read I Used Hot ShoT.

Do you mean Hot Shot Bedbug and Flea Fogger (a fogger or bomb)?

If so, I'm curious-- when did you use it?

drewlizard - 5 hours ago »
Is it fine if i dont wash it? Im reading the instructions and bit confused. They say dont dry clean. Machine wash and tumble dry medium. And no iron.
Does that mean i can wash it by hand washing or not?

As far as washing the item before use, whether you wash it or not is a judgment call. Some people may do this routinely with new items, others not.

Hand washing is probably more delicate than machine washing so in terms of whether you would damage the item, I would guess probably not. (Asking the manufacturer will give a definitive answer if you're worried.)

However, note that if you have bed bugs, the theory is that (assuming the encasement is bed bug proof), you're potentially sealing bed bugs which are on the box spring or mattress inside the encasement, so once you apply it, you won't want to take it off and wash it, since that might release any bed bugs which were trapped inside.

And if the item had been exposed to bed bugs, and contained some, you probably wouldn't want to hand wash, since washing on hot may not kill all bed bugs and eggs (if any), in the way that drying on hot can be counted on to.

I'm not an expert, and I don't know which product you bought, but I am speaking generally.

Hi,

As they say the devil is in the detail, when you spend years looking at signs you just know what is old, faded and diffused versus what appears to be faecal to the untrained eye. Faecal trace analysis is my specific specialty within the microcosm of the bedbug universe and over the years I have trained my eye to pick up this level of detail from as much as six foot away.

If you have a very light case and are lucky it can be resolved through cleaning alone so long as you do not have a "local source" which is effectively topped up but it takes more concerted effort than good luck.

You should spend time reading the FAQ and building up your bedbug knowledge so you know what to look for in future to dodge the bullet as it were. I always have BB blue in my travel bag for inspections as you never know when it might be called upon, it's one of my essential tools, not that I don't trust my own eyes more than just about anyone else's but even that 0.000001% possibility of an error I have is greater than my experience with Blue.

I am a tough person to convince when it comes to products but this one gets my full support, in fact I can only think of 6 products that get my seal of approval and I have tested hundreds. I have a reputation for being rather harsh and critical when it comes to most of the ullage out there and you certainly can't pay me for a positive opinion.

Hi, David,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I didn't hear of Bed Bug Blue until after we threw the mattress & box spring out! (They were in bad condition anyway)

I'm curious as to what makes you think the stains--if they are BB fecal ones--are old or have been treated?

They look to me--with my very untrained eye--just a bit more faded than the ones in this photo posted by the forum, which weren't noted to be old. http://www.flickr.com/photos/bedbugger/2849030847

Also in the case of the mattress & boxspring that were briefly in my room, the stains were MUCH less numerous & almost all on the edges between the mattress surfaces--virtually not on any of the 6 mattress surfaces themselves. Do very-light infestations ever just die on their own without chemical treatment? Get squished by the sleeper or something?

Thanks for your help,
Adam

That's a good idea about the monitors. Unfortunately, my mom has already spotted 3 last night in her room. She said was full of blood when she squished it. She later called ABC and they said some activity was normal and that they would fully be able to determine if we need another treatment when the dog comes out because the stragglers could be dead by then. Um, I hope so. I mean, the treatment would be free of charge but who would want to go through all of this again? The treatment was Sat, so I would think they would be dead by now.

He Used A Little Drone Dust, And Mentioned Or Stated Rather That I Knew More About Bed Bugs Than He Did. I Saw TheM Again Despite What I Read I Used Hot ShoT. No BItes For A Couple Weeks. I Had Also BOught An EncAsment. I Bought Safer Brand DE And Put On His Base Boards.. But The Infestation Was Only On His Bed I Thought. I Routinely Checked The Other Beds But Saw Nothing, And One I Saw Some In My Bed, On Other Side Of House, We Took Bed Apart Cleaned N Isolated, Put DE Round The Room By PUlling Back Carpet. All Beds Are Isolated, With Tubs And DE In Them. There Is Light Dusting On EveRy Base Board And We Drilled Holes In Walls And Puffed DE Into Voss Then Sealed. There Is A dusting Under SeaTs Of Sectional And Under Dressers, NotTo Mention We Literally Cut His Bed Frame Down Put Into Bags And Burned AloNg With Two Other Pieces Of Furniture, In His Room. The Only Room With Carpet Is My Room, TheTreatOfThe House Is Hard Wood OR Other (Stone Slate Tile, Floating Hard Wood, Etc) We Wash The Bedding Nightly AloNg With P.js. We Did About A Week N Half Ago See Some Babies Actually The Nights We Burned Stuff.. After That, Maybe Some Casings Or Dehydrated Bugs (I Couldn't Really Tell) But Nothing LIve. Could It Be Over? Btw We Removed Light Switches But Found Nothing, And Caulked Anyways. We Also Caulked Around The Ceiling And This Fri Were Removing Base Boards Dusting A Lil DE So Its Inside Not Outside And Then CaulkiNg Them. What You Think?

congrats best of luck! After the fail PCO treatment to my place I myself have decided to go with the DIY approach. I have vacuumed, steamed, and dusted my whole room with DE. I hope this pans out. I've been stressed and depressed about this situation ever since.

Hi,

The label is usually easy to remove and almost always smaller than the foot print of the monitor anyway so if you don't want to remove it you will cover it with the install.

Thanks for clarifying - "back of the legs" makes more sense when referring to the person! I don't think I need to bother my husband to upload a picture as I believe the monitor should be on the underside of the seat, front and center. In that area, though, is a label stapled to the material covering the underside of the chair. In your opinion, will the monitor adhere well to the label or should the label be removed first? Thanks!

Hi,

Non of the images you have posted are indicative of bedbugs.

I would suggest that you look at monitoring solutions and pass that information on to the god child's parents as well.

The reality is that it takes less time to confirm or indicate bedbugs than most people spend worry if they have bedbugs or not.

The tools are out there but they can only help if you use them.

cstone20 - 4 hours ago »
We recently bought these bed bug traps, that you place under the corners of the mattress, and they're sticky, and they'll attract the bugs and catch them. So you know if you have any before a big infestation has a chance to start. They were fairly inexpensive, and they've received pretty good reviews.

Hi again,

Actually, I believe I also purchased the same "sticky traps" that you put under the corner of the mattress before I found this forum/site. (I bought A LOT of products before I found this site.) I can't tell you if they work or not because I threw mine away after being told . . . "uh, not so much"! (Also, just for disclosure purposes, I have never found a bed bug in my home so I can't say I never caught one with them if there was nothing to catch.)

There is a "Useful Stuff" tab at the top of the page that has recommendations for products that the experts and users know that work. Again, I cannot personally tell you if the sticky traps work or not.

You do need to stay vigilant in your bed bug monitoring though . . . especially if your work place is infested! Do you live in a single family home or multi-family (apartment, condo, etc.)?

Hello,

I have been following this forum for quite some time, as I suspected I had bed bugs back in early March. Unfortunately, my property management had their PCO come out, who insisted that it was "fleas" on multiple occasions, despite the fact that they knew multiple other units were infested with bed bugs (all the way up from the 2nd floor to the 6th floor). They initially refused to treat for bed bugs. It wasn't until I found a dead one on my bathroom wall that they gave up the flea bit. Long story short, it's almost the end of May, and I still have bed bugs, despite a few treatments.

The last treatment (which required me to prep my entire apartment for the second time because they didn't re-treat appropriately after the initial treatment), was on this past Monday. I'm pretty sure the PCO is utilizing alcohol-based pesticides, as the smell is unmistakable. On Tuesday Morning, I woke up with a gorgeous specimen on my pillow (three months, and I'd never actually seen a living one - this one was perfect). I immediately grabbed my spray bottle of alcohol (fresh, just opened a day prior) and drenched the bug. I then bagged it up in a Ziplock and headed out to work. He wasn't moving at all when I bagged him up (his name is Oscar, by the way).

When I came home, the first thing I did was make sure he was still in the bag. He was. Out of morbid curiosity, I thought I'd tap the counter a bit to see if he moved. And he SURE DID! Despite the fact that I personally drenched him in 91% alcohol. Fresh bottle. I've been spraying the bed with it each night as it seems to prevent the bites (I must be highly allergic to them), but I'm also a smoker, and I don't want to turn into one of the bed bug self-treatment horror stories. Is it even worth spraying the alcohol anymore? Is it possible that they're resistant to it?

In addition, the PCO says to stay packed up for 30 days, as that's when they'll return for their follow up treatment. My understanding of the bed bug life cycle leads me to believe they should be re-treating much sooner than 30 days after the "initial" (truly, the second initial) treatment. Is this true?

Thanks David.

I looked for leaks and I don't have any. :-/
I'm not sure if I posted the grayish streaks that I posted in the new post I just did. Do you think that is bed bug related. I I'm not sure if I'm just getting paranoid. The resin for being so paranoid is because I had my god child over a few weeks ago and she said she thinks they have bed bugs. They haven't confirmed it but she stayed over a few nights. She did not bring anything with her besides the clothes on her back. Could they be transmitted that way or should. Not be that worried about it? She didn't come directly for her house here she went to a soccer game and then came over after. I'm not sure if they would stay on someone that long like in their shoes or something.

Hi,

I can only tell you that whatever this is its very watery and liquid, the pigment content is low.

I don't think you will find anyone who can confirm what it is visually but I would check above the bed for drips of moisture or a small leak.

Its certainly nothing bedbug related. the only way I can think of to scientifically work out what it is would be through HPLC or GC-MS analysis and the cost of those tests would be prohibitive.

Hi,

With regards 1 I am referring to the back of the legs of the person sitting on the chair, what you describe is more akin to the bottom of the seat user. If you take a picture I can comment more accurately.

With regards 2 the chair that you see int he image can also be tilted and swiveled. The monitor construction negates any flex movement that would not be appealing to bedbugs.

I am super sad right now. I woke to potty and found a scary lookin guy in my bathroom who looked like he was gonna attack. Now I am not scared of spiders and I let them be usually. But this dude was a little different looking. So I took him outside. After I looked up what he was (a daredevil jumper spider), I wanted him back. I went to retrieve him from the porch and it had started to rain. I def wish I had looked him before I took him outside.

A Book Louse looks very similar to that of a bed bug nymph. People send them to me all the time for identification. I think after all this time you would've had a pretty significant infestation. One question is how did you move your belongings? Did you rent the truck or did you move it privately in your own personal vehicle. It might be too early to freak out I would suggest monitoring. If you catch anything else have it identified. Good luck!
