Hi,

I've been itching like mad the past week (my legs, chest, and back)... and I've been wondering if I might have a bed bug infestation. I think I may have seen one tonight but I tried to capture it and instead squished it.

I also tore apart my room.. and I found this black line running the entirety of one side of my mattress. I'm too afraid to lift it up and see what's underneath.

Is this fecal matter?

I read about trying to rub some off with a q-tip but it wouldn't come off.

I'm feeling really anxious and scared if it is bed bugs, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am also nervous that my clothes are somehow NOT clean or that drying everything on hot for 30-40 minutes a load did not do the job...

Generally speaking, if your clothing was dirty, then drying isn't ideal because drying dirty clothing can kind of set the dirt in.

However, it should not impact on bed bug killing, so don't worry. If you pack items LOOSELY (do not stuff them in) and run dryers on hot for 30-40 minutes (if you start with dry items) , bed bugs and eggs should be killed if present.

I personally would not redo those items.

More importantly I found a HOLE on a bag today after the treatment had occurred.

It's probably very unlikely that a bed bug got in. That said, if it will make you stop wondering and help your peace of mind, why not redo this one load?

Contractor's bags (from Costco, hardware store, Home Depot, Canadian Tire, etc.) should be thicker and more sturdy than regular garbage bags, if that's what you're using. they're not expensive if bought in bulk.

If tying tightly is a problem, cable ties are cheap and make a nice tight seal.

Try not to worry too much. Many PMPs don't even require people to do laundry as part of prep. Yours is being cautious and that's fine but he admitted it's a light case and they probably never made it to the clothes.

It's easy to make yourself crazy over these things, but try to relax. You will get through this!

Hi,

Pretty certain it's a "something in the outline shape of an insect but not an insect" the texture appears to be more mat and matted than an insect would be.

Hope that helps.

Please read the DE FAQ as it answers a number of your questions. DE should not be heavily applied (so "pour it everywhere" is not a good plan). The bellows duster is something some have found useful, but is not a requirement. Others use a makeup brush.

Again, please read the FAQ.

I am new to this site and from what I've read it seems like a great site with help from experienced PCO's to people who have had these no good for nothing bugs. Here's my story...

I lived in an apartment for over 2 years before I moved into my house almost 2 months ago. Two weeks after I moved into my house (which I'm renting) my boyfriend got a few bites on his back and we brushed it off as just random bites. A few days after I got a couple bites on my arm in random spots. I asked a nurse I work with if she thought they were bed bugs and she didn't think they looked like they were bed bugs. A few days after that I had about 4 bites on my lower leg and knew it was bed bugs, they had the classic line and they itched like crazy. I asked my kids if they had any itchy bites on them and they declined. I pulled my bed apart and found nothing.
Another few days goes by and I was reading online about these suckers. As I was reading the signs of having them, I suddenly remembered about a month before we moved out of the apartment I remember washing my sons' bed sheets and found small blood stains. I jumped off the couch and went to take a look at my oldest son's mattress and was horrified. I found quite a few hanging out on the corners of the mattress and saw all that black fecal stuff I was reading about. I then went into my other son's room and his had them as we'll, but not as bad as my oldest. They had shared a room in the apartment, so that explains that. Anyway, I panicked. I went to Lowe's, sprayed & saturated their mattresses and ended up throwing them out because there is no way I was going to let them sleep on them. I called a PCO who came out a week later to do an inspection. I told him I had not seen anything live since we found them on the beds. He advised me to buy air mattresses for when my kids came home from staying with my parents all week. He said we probably just needed one treatment since I hadn't seen any live bugsTwo days before the inspection, I just happened to go in my youngest son's room late one night and found one crawling on the floor by his air mattress. Other than that...nothing else seen.
PCO came and did a treatment. Called PCO 2 weeks after treatment because now I was starting to see them and still getting bites, but they were babies and a couple medium sized (not quite adults). I called him and he was asking if my kids had any sleep overs or if anyone has slept at my house which I said no. He said he could come back out but not sure how soon. Tonight, I found an adult bed bug on my couch Killed it of course.
This is very difficult since my boyfriend and I are the only ones who get reactions to the bites. My kids don't even have red marks as to where they've been bitten, nothing! I have since put DE in mine and my oldest son's bedroom. That was done almost a week ago and my boyfriend and I are still getting bit but it's just one here and there. Hoping it's working since I read it can take up to 10 days to kill them.

So here are my questions for anyone who has experienced or is a professional:
Should the PCO spray again at no additional charge since he said I only needed one treatment? He charged me $285 for one treatment and I'm not sure how thorough the guy was that came. He did not say anything about a fee when I talked to him, but I'm not going to assume there's no fee.
Should I possibly look into another company?

Sorry this is long, just want to give details about what has been happening. The infestation seems small but I want this taken care of before it gets out of control. It's been almost. 2 months since I found out and I feel like they are never going to go away. These things driving me crazy, losing sleep. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. So I did another careful search of the mattress and found the following:

Please confirm this is a beetle and a earwig.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/95631627@N03/8750030098/sizes/k/in/photostream/

Could you please identify this bug? Could it be a biting midge?

http://www.amazon.com/Earth-Diatomaceous-lbs-Powder/dp/B001THVH9G/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1368835332&sr=8-6&keywords=diatomaceous+earth+food+grade

I read about this while researching and saw this on amazon. Many ppl who have bed bugs said diatomaceous earth works for it but some say it doesn't. Those reviews that say it works for bed bugs also are amazon verified purchase... which means its legit right?

This seems to be very cheap $16 for it and lot of good reviews. People mention how bug spray didn't do anything yet this worked for them. Can people here give me their opinion?

1. Also, is it easy/hard to apply? One person mentioned you need to buy this to apply it

2. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SW52CE/ref=gno_cart_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A269N201SWOEB6

Is this necessary or not? I seen some ppl mention you could just use a spoon and im confused what is the purpose of this.

3. So basically if i have bed bugs that bite me when i sleep on my bed at night, then just take a spoon and pour this surrounding my bed? Some ppl mention put it on each of the 4 legs on your bed... however... i dont have that The thing that supports my mattress is a box so how would i do this?
People say it looks like flour so i just put this around my bed? Do i put this under my mattress or anywhere near there?Basically its like flour and i just put it everywhere in that i suspect it has bedbugs?

4. Also, how long does one leave these things there for before you clean it up? Do you clean it up once ever week or month and then pour more?

5. Also, i heard ppl mention you could just pour it everywhere and then go to bed etc. So this doesn't affect your smelling health at all?

Don't know what to tell ya, but I do know that I have so many big black bags of clothes in my kitchen that I don't know what is which anymore...

My habit thusfar (between treatments 2 and 3 of 3) is to take one bag (= 2 loads, roughly) down to the laundry every few days. Blowing through quarters like nobody's business, but whatever.

When I pull stuff from the laundry, I separate them according to stuff I will use NOW, stuff I will use SOON, and stuff for LATER (another season), and am tagging the new (doubled) bags accordingly.

I'm not a PMP so can't be of much more help on this one. A pro here may be able to comment on the treatment protocol.

Bed bugs can be eliminated-- even with sprays. Heat treatment is an option, another PCO is another. If there's an undetected source of bed bugs, they won't go away no matter what is done, until it's addressed.

I do not see there being any other source - we live in a house, no daycare or work. School is a maybe, but there are no cases with students or in the school in general (as far as I know). My son refuses to sleep in his room, and we made the mistake of throwing the mattress out the night we found out. Also, we put a new mattress up there after the second treatment because the PCO said that would be okay, but there are still plenty of them up there. On the 5-10 nights he has slept up there since finding out (about a month and a half ago), there have been stragglers climbing on the walls and such. The floors have been treated, the mattresses/boxspring, and the walls in my son's room I believe. The last time the inspector was here it was supposed to be the final inspection - yet he only checked my son's room and sprayed it again cause he found one on the window sill.... This has become a nightmare...

Dear drew,

The pros do NOT consult amazon to make insecticide purchase decisions nor do we rely upon the testimonials posted on various websites by non-professionals either.

Simply stated, and based upon my interaction with the professional market, the top bed bug products being used by professionals are as follows:

Liquid Concentrate Residuals:
Temprid SC, Transport, Phantom

Dusts:
Tempo Dust, Alpine Dust, DE (in various forms), (some are using cimexa)

Aerosols:
Bedlam Plus

Resin Vapor Type Insecticide Strips:
Nuvan ProStrip

Virtualy none of the pros are using the natural type products which do not contain an actual insecticide toxicant in the formulation. Guess why ?

(Note to all: I have a professional relationship with manufacturers of certain insecticide products, equipment and supplies.)

However, I will never recommend a product that does not in fact actually work !

Hope this helps ! paul b.

Hi again,

I'm glad you found David Cain's "bite-primer" post helpful!

With that being said . . . it never hurts to monitor for bed bugs! Especially since you have had to deal with them before. I know you say you have "traps" under the bed, but David Cain is also the inventor of the Bed Bug Alert passive monitor that gives a lot of people on the forum peace of mind. It is a passive monitor that provides a perfect harborage for bed bugs and, therefore, is an early detection device!!!

Here's some information regarding them:

http://www.bed-bugs.co.uk/bedbugpassivemonitors.html

Bug spray is contact killing only. So you would have to directly spray the bugs, they have no residual affect so it would not kill bugs that you cannot directly spray.

Hi,
I need serious advice, at best one that I can quote to my landlord!
My landlord had heat-treatment done in the appartment above us. I had bad feelings about this the whole time and now we have found a bed bug in our appartment. I dont see any way it could have gotte there than by coming through the cracks in the wall (its an old house) fleeing from the heat-treatment. Now my landlord wants to do heat treatment in our appartment. I asked him whether he shouldnt do the whole house, because i think that a) the stroy will probably just repeat itself and b) the bedbugs might alreday be in the attic and basement appartment, perhabs even back in the appartment that was originally treated. He just wants to do our appartment - and he thinks that putting bean leaves on the floor after will help. Is he right - and if not: where can I find a good reputable source I can quote to support my concerns?

Well DC, if it's the two ladies I'm thinking of . . .(not to mention any names TAOT and BBU) . . . then we know what they were doing on top of the Manhattan building . . . so the question is . . . did THEY get a picture of the full moon that night?! (If they did, perhaps I could add that to your calendar page!) ;)

Not guilty!! I was nowhere near the Manhattan building and, besides, I don't have a wide angle lens for my camera.

First off, based on your experience, do bed bug sprays at least work at least a little bit?

We have bed bugs and many bite my face and i have huge marks everywhere. We are currently using a bug spray called this JT Easton Kills Bedbug II spray

http://www.amazon.com/JT-Eaton-207-W-Bedbugs-1-Quart/dp/B001B1GASI/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1368809215&sr=8-3&keywords=eaton+bug+spray

I sprayed it and it doesn't seem to do much though i only used it for 1 day as i still got bitten while im sleeping in my bed.

Can someone recommend me a bed bug spray? According to amazon, this one seems to have the best ratings called

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001VMLSXY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AI22KW1GDMLVY

Has anyone used this before? My landlord tells us to try bug spray first.

The bed bug spray that i see on amazon that has probably the best reviews of all of them, someone mentioned it could be fake review because no bug spray work?

Is my bug spray that im currently using the JT Eaton II not effective?
