We found 1 bedbug (adult not fed, not pregnant) on my kitchen molding 54 days ago. We encased mattresses, put in climb ups, had an inspection (which found nothing). We have not noticed any bites, have not found any other bugs. I have been researching and panicing and depressed scared about finding more. What is the time frame I am looking at to feel that the "problem" is taken care of from finding the 1? How long till more would show up and we we see the tell tale signs? Thank you for the support. I feel I am making my family crazy.

My advice about Propoxur, is to not use it, the fumes are way too nasty, and in my case it did not even help. Don't use it.

Hello

I cannot post the names of the ones that rip me off, it could bring problems to this site and that's the last thing I want to do.

What did it for me was a combination of three things;

1-) I moved and Packtited everything I owned, I brought some stragglers stills.

2-) Pestroy came to my place, they did 3 applications over what I believe was 45 days.

3-)An expert on the board here was of huge help and extremely patient, so after a while of not seeing cast skins, bugs, or fecal, and watching my passive monitor daily, I know you are not supposed to watch them that often, but it helped me, I ended up going to a great therapist who is taking care of me, since then my "bites" are slowly disappearing, slowly being the key word here. The secondary bite set was/is a skin reaction from trauma.

Looking back, some mistakes:

I threw out way too many things, spent way too much money on treatments that did not work, in a panic with out doing research on them, and actually ended up make the issue way worst by spreading the bugs everywhere.

No exterminators was ever recommended to me until a long while, Pestroy came from a woman at my work, and Maheu, who also did a thorough check-up after came from the social services.

over this now almost 2 years period of this hell, I lost about $45,000 (more or less), almost had to file for bankruptcy, had a major nervous breakdown, lost weight to a point that it was extremely dangerous, the thing is I'm disabled and suffering from a major illness and have zero family.

let not my post scare you, most people don't have a crazy ordeal like mine

I am certain that your issues will get resolved sooner.

Good luck to you all.

Besides the quality/skills of the team, the methods used, and what the cost covers (elimination vs. set number of treatments), cost will likely also be affected by where you live (higher in places like NYC, Long Island, for example).

The first one I called sometime ago, one of the guy who answered gave me the impression they were literally shooting everything, and when I asked what to do with items that I don't want to be damaged (e.g. some of my collections), he said something like bag them, so in my head I was seeing the PCO coming and spraying literally everything everywhere like Rambo and the bag will protect against the chemical he spray everywhere. But after a couple of call, I understood they do not do that and that they threat the bedroom more and some of the other room at specific spot, floor, etc.

Another one I called said it was not biggie for the basement as they don't go there, he seemed confident that he knows were they are usually hiding. But a detail is that my cats does go in basement so I guess that is a possible bait for them.

Two of my tenants have at least one heavy cluttered room. I am putting pressure for them to declutter, but it is not always easy for people to declutter, myself included...

And another of my tenant (who is a bit detached from other) is in a small apartment and everything is optimized to take advantage of the space, it would be very hard, to not say impossible to move his things, unless we were literally getting everything out... The only door that is connect directly to the building inside is apparently sealed with lot of tape inside his apt. (I did not verified how it is done exactly).

Also, all the one I called (except one for the # of treatment) were in the 1 treatment, fixed price per apt or room, threat all rooms, etc. category. However I have now compiled a list of more questions and more recommended PCOs to call this week. Hopefully I will find a good one.

I just moved into a new apartment ( a week ago) with minimal furniture; I purchased a new mattress, and as you will see a white comforter, which when I picked it up several days after (on the underside or what is facing my body)I noticed specks of rust colored spots on it. I'm hoping it's not bed bugs (obviously), but if it is, I want to do what I can to get rid of them!

I haven't noticed any stains on the sheets or the mattress, and I haven't seen any bugs or had marks/bites on my body. This photo is after I washed it, so they spread out a bit.

Please help, I'm starting to get freaked out just thinking about them.

Bed bugs could theoretically survive two treatments (since they have to be individually hit or cross residual poisons to die). They can, under some circumstances, survive months without feeding.

However, it sounds like you don't have any visual evidence (bed bugs, eggs, fecal stains, cast skins). Skin reactions are not evidence that you have bed bugs at home. Lots of things can cause a skin reaction and since they can be delayed, there's no reason to think you have bed bugs at home.

Inexpensive passive bed bug monitors may help you assure yourself that you don't have them. If you did, they should help you find visual evidence. You can read more about them in the useful tools page.

Yes, bed bugs can be eliminated. However, all affected units need to be identified and treated at the same time, and treatment needs to occur in each affected unit until all bed bugs are gone (and this should be monitored somehow).

When you say, "several treatments by two different PCOs" can you give us a timeline of:

When treatments occurred in your unit and at what intervals?
When treatments occurred in other affected units?
What was done in your unit? What was used and in which rooms?

I live in a 4 story building. It has now been over a year and several treatments by 2 different pcos has been unsuccessful. My question is , realistically, how likely is it that the bugs can be eradicated. It's an old building, 30 units , 4 stories. Multiple units have been affected. Typically when someone reports it, they treat adjacent units and above and below.

My question is, what is the success rate roughly when it comes to treating multi-unit buildings ? 2 in 3 ? 1 in 20 ? Do the ever get eradicate3d ? Is there a reasonable chance ? for some reason the building cannot be tented. They have used pesticides, dog sniffer.

I'm trying to not lose my sanity. I would have moved a long time ago, but I'm disabled and it's just not feasible finding a new place and the moving.

Thanks for your feedback. This seems to be a wonderful forum and my heart goes out to anyone who is dealing with this. Best of luck

Sorry--I know I've posted a couple of times and it never ends up being a bedbug! This one looked like a photo I saw of a fed nymph (I forget which instar) so I really thought it was one, even though I can see the shape of the body doesn't match most pictures shown.

I really appreciate the ID and hope I'm not coming off as a bit silly. I did really encounter them in that motel and I am not sure I'll ever be able to forget (and I think once you cross paths with them once you never forget), so I appreciate being able to share photos here to make sure I'm not ignoring something important! It must seem like I'm not doing my own research but I did do a ton of it, I swear--it's just a bit difficult to have peace of mind when most available information shows they're incredibly hard to avoid/get rid of. Some part of my mind won't allow me to believe I really escaped them, so I think that's why I can't completely dismiss things that don't completely fit the profile.

Thanks for your time and your ID--I do appreciate it

Hannah -- what a crazy story. You absolutely did the right thing not moving into his place. As others mentioned, even if he chooses to move, he'll have to get treated anyway. I'm not an expert but those numbers, from what I've seen on the web, sound like a very bad infestation. They won't go away without professional treatment.
I can't imagine asking a significant other to come visit in a house I knew was infested, much less pressure to move in. You are absolutely doing all the right things.

Thanks para_bug! It's been a crazy ride, haha. The landlord seems to be poorly informed. when we talked to her today, she insisted all the furniture be out of the house when it gets treated. Clearly, not understanding and they did not come to any real agreement or terms. she gave permission for boyfriend to break lease and he plans on doing so trashing everything he owns except pots and pans.

NY Bug Man - 5 minutes ago »
You get what you pay for. You will find prices from $300-$2000.
Usually people get a few quotes and research the companies. If you feel comfortable with the Company and they have a good reputation $1600 can come out pretty cheap considering.
Pest Control has more overhead than people realize. With bed bugs to give a good treatment you really have to tear apart the room and take your time. Time costs money and someone who has a good reputation charges that price, well, cause they can.
Its always good to get a few estimates.

Well said, and then some. Always shop quality not price when dealing with Bed Bugs I always say. Treating two apartments at 1,600 sounds great to me as long as the overall success is there. Its all about the size of the place, who's doing the treatment, what they're doing, etc. etc.

Best of Luck .... And remember, amateur attempts provide amateur results. True professionals know what it takes to get it done right and will charge accordingly.

lol ... I guess I've seen tooooo many Bed Bugs in my day to agree. In no way shape or form does that look even close to a Bed Bug. At any life stage.

I always wonder how people can find similarities with bugs and think that what they are looking at may be a Bed Bug, especially when it looks like a cement truck compared to a Bed Bug.

With all the pictures of Bed Bugs online I always figure it's easy to compare images against the evidence that people find but I'm always proven wrong.

No disrespect at all - You've come to the right place for an ID. It's not a Bed Bug

The travel FAQs explain possible ways to visit a potentially infested location and avoid bringing bed bugs home. The FAQs on getting bed bugs out of your stuff will help. If you can afford a Packtite (Packtite FAQ), this would be one way to treat belongings coming home.

If you're regularly getting exposed, you will want to be cautious with the clothing you wear home, and items you may be overlooking like shoes, purses and wallets, just to be on the safe side. If you drive home, be sure and seal things in airtight plastic bags (clear contractor bags will work) for the trip.

You can't really do much to avoid getting bitten there, but inspecting your room (covered in the travel FAQs) should help you identify an obvious problem and bring it to staff attention.

Sorry, I wasn't done but hit send post by accident.

I had been super concerned that I had brought a bb home with me and so I have been super diligent in checking my mattress every weekend. A week after I got home I found what looked like a bb to me hiding under a pillow. My husband says that I am crazy and that it was some sort of beetle bcs it had wings, but I am certain it was a bb. After several months of not sleeping or functioning properly I decided to call in a pco with a dog. So March 2013 a pco came in with a dog and I got the all clear. I had no bed bugs.

So here we are June 2013 and Im still paranoid and obsessed with bed bugs. I woke up the other morning with 2 bites on my wrist and now I'm convinced that we have them for sure. It's now been over 6 months and I haven't seen a single bug. I'm driving my husband crazy and I think I've caused major mental damage to my brain bcs I can't stop thinking about it.

I'm in desperate need of help and I won't to sleep because I'm terrified. I know this all sounds so crazy and I don't consider myself crazy by any means, but I just need to know if they exist or not.

So bottom line is...are these super bugs and can they hide out and live without feeding for Months on end? Can they survive 2 rounds of treatment?

Hello. I need to some travel advice. We are taking a family vacation to Disneyland soon. I saw P Bello’s travel advice and am planning to follow. I don’t know what to do about the stroller. It is a big double stroller. My SO thinks I’m being ‘crazy’ and doesn’t want to take any precautions. I’m being graciously given ½ hour to check the room before my family comes up.

How can I protect the stroller? It won’t fit in a big garbage bag. The hotel we are staying at is huge. So from what I’ve read in reviews parking is far away and I know my SO would flip if I insisted on walking it out to the parking lot every night and picking it up in morning.

Also, I have a few other questions I could not find answers to:
Do you let housekeeping come in? We are staying a week. Do you take precautions with towels?

I called my hotel and asked for their bed bug policy. After being transferred several times a supervisor in housekeeping told me the following:
Employees watch a video when first hired and then again twice a year.
There are posters in common areas showing what to look for.
They haven’t had any recent encounters.
When bb are found they immediately treat and isolate the room along with the two rooms next to it and above and below.
Periodic preventive treatments are performed by outside PCOs on a regular basis.

Afterwards, I think I should have asked for additional details but based on the above is this a good/effective/standard policy?

Thanks in advance.

My sister had bed bugs August 2011 and had her house fully treated twice. She also threw away her matress and any other furniture the pco said was contaminated. She lived bug free For several months and then moved in with her boyfriend. The house had been vacant for 7 months when I stayed over for 2 weeks. I didn't notice any bugs or react to any bites. In January of 2013 I spent another night there and saw a bed bug crawling on her comforter at 7am in the morning. I quickly packed my bags and left. As soon as I got home I washed and super heated all of the items I had with me including the clothing I was wearing.

I was summoned to jury duty and had to be on-call for a week in the event I had to show up for selection, so my war on bedbugs was postponed for a week. This is more or less an update to this thread:
http://bedbugger.com/forum/topic/a-couple-of-diy-questions

A local PCO came by and did an inspection of my bedroom and living room, as well as my downstairs neighbor's rooms (she has them now as well). He found evidence of bedbugs in both of our places and gave a quote to my landlord of $1,600 for pesticide/dust treatment (3 visits). They also do heat treatments to the tune of $2,000+. Of course my landlord is going with the cheaper option, but right now he's negotiating to see if he can come down a bit on the price.

I don't know what the going rate is for pest control. Is $1,600 on the expensive side or is it the norm, considering factors such as number of rooms, room size and extent of infestation?

I went a whole two weeks without a bite, until after the PCO guy left my place yesterday. A bedbug bit me just below the neck while I was sitting at my computer---in the daytime! I had just finished making my bed back up after the PCO guy finished with it, so I'm wondering if it came off of my bedding and latched onto my clothes.

Anyway, I'll keep you all posted

Soooooo

After false alarms, I look at this bug and to me it almost certainly looks like a bedbug.

My friend stayed at her boyfriend's and they both woke up with itchy rashes. Her rash has decreased since she left his house a few days ago. She was telling me she's afraid he might have bedbugs.

Well.

I had sat in her car, so I went home and shook out my clothes, convinced I was being paranoid, and then started a bath. When I saw a tiny little bug crawling up by the spout to the faucet handle.

To me it looks scarily like a fed nymph. It looks too elongated at first glance but that's the shape they take when fed, right? The only thing I can see that seems to contradict it is that sometimes when walking around in the plastic bag it looked...bendy, almost? I included a blurrier photo where it's curving to show how odd it looked. I don't know if that's typical for bedbugs.

But all I'm feeling right now is dread. I have no idea what to do next.
