This is my story...
Family came to visit from out-of-town. 2 weeks after they got here, "C" says he has mosquito bites on his arm. My husband and I look at them, but they don't look like mosquito bites and we laugh because it looks like the bites are in groups of three. We don't think anything of it until the next morning, when "I" wakes up with the same thing and we start googling. However, we can't find ANY evidence of bugs other than one dead one that does not look like a BB but to me. We can't get anyone out to look until tomorrow and Wed. The problem seems isolated to them as my husband, myself, and our son have no bites. The guest room is in a far corner of the house.

This is my question...
I talked to a big exterminating company that does thermal treatments (coming tomorrow) and a small dog-sniffing company that recommends just a room treatment if it's a small problem (possibly coming Wednesday, waiting to see what the big company finds). Does anyone have a recommendation on who to go with or should I just wait to see? I want to nip it in the bud but don't want to pay $1800 if it's not a big problem yet....so new to this and so confused! Also, both said to leave the guest room alone but should I extreme clean the rest of my house? Could that spread the bugs? I was thinking of either vacuuming or using my steam cleaner...

Is Temprid SC as good or better than Bedlam Plus? I know it probably varies.. but in general?

I see you can buy 400ML for about 90 dollars online. It says "Use at a rate of 0.27 fl oz (8 milliliters) of Temprid SC per gallon of water". This would indicate you can create 50 gallons of this stuff?? That seems awesome cheap. Am I missing something? It can be put into a regular spray bottle?

Do pest control companies have contracts to spray/ dust to prevent bed bugs? If so what happens if you get them anyway? What kind of chemicals would they use to do this? We travel alot. Despite checking we ended up with bed bugs. Hired a pco and are currently waiting to see if the bugs show back up. I never want to go through this again and would happily pay to keep the bugs away.

Hello,

I need some advice on sensible places to put BB Alert Passive Monitors, which would not be overkill.
A couple of months ago, I placed the monitors on all of the beds in my home, and as they have been clear, I have had peace of mind. However, even though I believe I had read on someone's post that the beds are enough unless one sleeps elsewhere, I have lately been worried that this is not the case for me.

My biggest concern is the finished attic, which is quite full and is used 1) to store many things including papers in filing cabinets, containers of outgrown clothing, new school supplies, etc., 2) is the place where I iron clothing 3) contains 3 desks and chairs where my kids do their homework and my husband does paperwork/works on the computer. The computer desk chair is sat in the most often of the three; hardly a day goes by when it is not sat in. There is also another small wooden desk with an old dining room chair that is sat in nearly every day and an old school chair/desk combo.

My concern about this area is that the kids’ backpacks and schoolbooks and my husband’s bag and coat that he carries/wears on the train to work are brought up there on a daily basis. If Heaven forbid bed bugs are brought home in those items, I’m concerned that they will hide out in the desk chairs and will not bother going to the bedrooms since, even though those chairs are not occupied at night (except for maybe Saturday night when my husband may work at the computer or other desk to the wee hours of the morning) there will be ample opportunities for the bugs to feed during the afternoons and weekends.

Is this an unjustified concern or will they come down to the bedrooms sometime shortly after being introduced to the attic? Since it is pretty full, it would be a nightmare if the floor became infested. My husband would not say that I cannot put monitors on the 3 desk chairs (maybe I would just put on the two most often used) but he is wondering when this will all end and if I will ever be satisfied with all of the precautions I have taken. He feels that it would be feeding my paranoia. He thinks I will never stop worrying anyway.

So basically my question is: would it be likely that bed bugs would be happy to just live up in the attic because the desk chairs are occupied almost daily, even though no one sleeps there??

Additionally, I am concerned about my living room furniture. It is not that the couch and 2 chairs are ever slept in but because the couch is only 6 feet from the front door. I would be concerned that anything hitchhiking into the house in bags that are often, at least temporarily, left by the front door, would be interested in going there. Is it enough to put a passive on the couch which is sat in more often than the chairs? Is it necessary at all since no one ever sleeps on it??

Thanks so much!

Heat treatment, done properly, is supposed to work in one shot. There are cases where it doesn't work as has to be repeated.

Rather than just relying on the company's own dog, you might also implement some monitors after treatment, and check them regularly.

Note that some heat treatment providers say it's "normal" to see some live bed bugs after treatment but they die within a day or two. I don't know if that's true but we have heard it a few times. Ask about this so you know what to expect. Monitors will help you see if bed bugs are appearing later too.

"Please confirm this is a beetle and a earwig."
Where do you live? Yes a beetle, maybe a chrysomelid, but I'm not sure that it's an earwig; I think it's something else. Both from outdoors.

"Could you please identify this bug? Could it be a biting midge?"
It looks like a true bug actually and not a fly (midges, gnats, mosquitoes are flies). Maybe a lygaeid or something like that. In any case, it's from outdoors.

Hi Paul,
Does the person who sent these questions to you know where you responded?
Can you please make the title reflect the subject a bit more in future? This may be confusing for people.

Rather than reposting questions from PMs under an anonymous sounding banner (to avoid naming people), I recommend asking people who PM you to repost their OWN questions on the forum at which point they can send you a link to the thread so you can join in on responding.

That way you're not reposting their PMs (which isn't a good idea even without usernames attached) and they can actually decide what's exposed so they can participate in the thread. Plus if they name the thread, there's no question they will find it.

We've had people here describe actual bed bugs in ways I wouldn't. In this case, I agree I wouldn't worry about a random bug from outside being a bed bug or related species, and just to be clear, I wouldn't call a pest control company.

I added two product names (Nuvan and Temprid SC) to this thread so the person whose PN you're responding to (and others with interest) will find it more easily.

As a general rule, the more specific the header, the better!

secondary confirmation. "

The problem with this is it sounds like the consumer is making an educated choice.

Whereas we hear of consumers whose inspectors seem to push treatment based solely on a dog alert.

[quote]10.8. Prior to making a treatment, the canine handler or a pest management professional
should attempt to confirm the canine alert by:
10.8.1. Visually inspecting the area to confirm the presence of an active infestation, or

With mattress encasement there is no added value from the "bedbug approved" products over a simple cost effective one and with regards pillow encasement I cant find any justification for them.

Think about it. You put a pillow in an encasement and you put this unit into a pillow case. What have you accomplished? Bed bugs will be able to climb into an open side of the pillow case and thereby infest the encased pillow that is in a pillow case. Bed bugs can also harbor under an encased pillow as it rests on the encased mattress.

> Do I need to have pillow encasements?
Here I agree with David because I can simply place my pillow in the dryer and run it through the hot cycle rendering it bed bug free fairly quickly.

As Paul and David noted above If you used a pillow encasement and pillow case, you could have the infestation inside the case, so the dryer will help out here.

Bed bugs aren't long and black so as the previous respondent said, probably not a bed bug.

I think that 'probably' not a bed bug is an understatement. Even setting aside the description, the likelihood that some random bug from outside is a bed bug is so small that in any other context, we'd call it zero.

Here's your Questions/Comments and my Responses below.

By posting my reply on the BBRF we are able to help others with similar questions and concerns !

( Note to all, I have a professional relationship as a consultant to various product manufacturers. However, if something works and I recommend it I will always tell you. Conversely, if something does not work, I'll tell you that as well. )

C: Before making another massive purchase of $200 + I would like to know if I should get anything else besides the Temprid SC.

R: $200+ can be a significant amount to many folks however, we need to remember that we can't kill a bed bug twice. Just sayin.

C: I also have in my cart some Nuvan strips, more Bedlam, Tempo dust, and a better sprayer for the Temprid.

R: If you have a good sprayer you can get by with just having the Temprid SC product. This is so because you can use the sprayer to apply the Temprid to the same harborage areas that you'd have done using the aerosol. Also, pound for pound, (i.e. area covered per volume of spray product solution) aerosol products generally cost a tad more to apply. kwik, do the math someone and see if I'm not correct on that one. Note that I recommend Bedlam Plus and not the original Bedlam product.

My questions:
Q: - do the Nuvan strips work well?

R: Yes they do. In fact, when used correctly the ddvp strips such as Nuvan are one of the best bed bug remediation product choices available in the US. However, please note that I specifically stated "when used correctly" ! These strips are NOT magic and simply purchasing them and applying them will NOT turn any homeowner, jackleg spray jocky or other would be bed bug homie into a KQ, Winston O'Buggy (really sir, drop that effin name step forward for the benefit of your market region), DS, DC or other suitable pro. REMEMBER, it's how a product is used which is much more important than which product is used when bed bugs are the target pest !

Q: Will it help me get rid of the bugs that are packed away before it is time to unpack them?

R: Yes it can if used correctly.

C: I am scared of any reinfestation even though I searched everything before placing in totes.

R: OK, we don't need to be scared. Concerned yes, scared not so much. Firstly, and we've addressed this b4, you're a Buckeyes fan. Be scared of still being a Buckeyes fan for more than an hour longer. Be scared tha Coach Myer might not make it through another season b4 heading back to the Gators & SECville which is NCAAFootballnervana !

C: My PCO is coming for "inspection only" but not until Friday. He didnt seem pleased that I found an adult. He said I have to be bringing them in.

R: Well, we'd not expect him to be "pleased" or happy however, this is the nature of his chosen profession. And, as far as re-introduction and "bringing them in" we'd have to ask "from where?" Is your job vulnerable to bed bug introduction or encounters? Do you work at such a place that bed bugs can reasonably be expected to be encountered there? Have you traveled? Had overnight guests? Etc, etc, etc ???

C: I KNOW I am not doing so. I think I am missing something.

R: OK, so this is a non-issue provided that you and your family have NOT encountered bed bugs whilst away from home.

C: My house is 4 bedrooms, 2400 sq feet, and I have searched every square inch. I am tired.

R: I'm tired too. I'm tired of Buckeyes Fans. ooops, just kidding there. Well, if you're still seeing live bed bugs then perhaps you need to tighten your bed bug dragnet search down from "every square inch" to every square millimeter. No one said bed bug work was easy. IN FACT, it ain't effin easy cause if it were, we wouldn't need this excellent Bed Bugger Forum (gratuitous comment to Nobugs there) would we ?

However, keep after it and you will eventually succeed, I promise !

Thanks for all your help!
Your "favorite" Buckeyes Fan

R: It's what I do, even for "OSU Fans" Good luck and hope this helps ! paul b.

It's only the landlords job to pay for an exterminator if that is the law of whatever state you live in.I live in Maryland, and the law here is that the landlord only has to pay if more then one unit is effected.
They agreed to treat ours anyways though because a good landlord knows that if they don't treat they will just spread and create a bigger problem.

The pet situation is a problem though, because even if your landlord agrees to treat, you will still have to find another place for your animals for at least a day. They cannot be in there during treatment.
And if you are seeing that many live bugs, then it sounds like you really need them to do something about it.

It is has been my experience that sprays don't really do a whole lot. They are good if you see live bugs, but don't do much to keep killing them. The diatomaceous earth dust is the only thing I have found that does any good.It is very slow at killing the bugs, because it is not a poison. It works by cutting their bodies and dehydrating them.

Some helpful tips to not get bit at night:
buy some square containers and put the bed frame legs in it surrounded by the dust. This way any bugs not on the bed will have to crawl through the dust to get to you.
Use double sided tape to surround your bed frame too.Bugs will get stuck on it and it is a good way to monitor how many bugs you have.

There is no real need to buy pillow encasements-but if not you should wash and dry your pillows on high heat.Hope this helps!
