I am moving this conversation to avoid further distraction on an advice thread.

Here, in response to a discussion, I said this:

How does this serve us as a bed bug k9 FAQ?

My understanding is that there are two main trainers of bed bug k9s in the USA (Pepe Peruyero and Bill Whitstine), that they have differing approaches, and that Bedbugger readers have at time praised dogs from each trainer. (There are also independent trainers.)

I believe there are dogs from various trainers which are effective, and there are both NESDCA certified and IFEDCA certified bed bug k9 teams which are effective, and where the handler searches for the bed bug the dog has alerted to. (There may also be "uncertified" k9 teams which are as effective.)

On the other hand, people have had issues with bed bug k9 inspections, for example, where a dog alerted but the sample was not confirmed, and then an "all clear" was given and LATER it became apparent that there were bed bugs. It happens, presumably even to the most effective dogs and teams.

To the customer, this means a great deal of frustration. I have seen some Bedbugger Forum readers hire one dog after another, getting different results from each.

Your best bet may be a handler who searches for a visual confirmation of any dog alert.

If you're reading recommendations about particular dogs on the forums, do remember that people who work in the bed bug k9 industry may not be unbiased in this matter. PCOs who have a connection with a particular handler may not be biased. And many customers aren't either.

Imagine a dog did correctly assess whether or not you have bed bugs. You go and post a review of your great dog team! A dog team that is only 50% accurate will have 5 happy customers and 5 who may be happy for a while, or not.

You have no way of knowing if reviews are coming from a happy customer whose dog team was 50% accurate, or one which was 95% accurate.

If your handler visually tries to confirm an alert, you may still not have a definitive answer whether you have bed bugs or not. However, it is arguably better to be unsure whether you have bed bugs than to get an "all clear" in error.

Comments welcome from Bedbuggers, bed bug PMPs, and/or dog trainers and handlers.

Note: to those in the industry: the FAQ will not state that only NESDCA certified (or NESDCA uncertified) dogs are reliable and equally effective, or that all NESDCA certified dogs are reliable and equally effective.

My understanding is this is not necessarily true, since training must be maintained by the handler even after certification tests are passed.

dreamersball on "dog inspection - false positive"

I'm a bit shy about posting on forums, but I wanted to share my story in case it helps others.

Recently we got some bites and worried that we had bedbugs. We hadn't found any actual bugs, but they're pretty small so we figured we should get an inspection. An inspector came, didn't find any bugs, but we decided to get a K9 inspection, because we figured if we did have them it wasn't a huge infestation but we wanted to nip it in the bud. It's hard not to get hysterical about the possibility of having bedbugs.

The K9 inspection was pretty brief; the dog stayed on the leash & the handler led it all over the house fairly quickly. When it went into the bedroom under suspicion, it sat down right next to the bed, on the side where the bites had been happening. Sitting down is the dog's signal, apparently, that it has smelled bedbugs. So, we concluded that we had them, though the inspector did not do any visual inspection in the area where the dog sat down -- to confirm the presence of the bugs.

We decided to think carefully about treatment options, because they're so expensive and we don't have a lot of money. That's when I came across this forum and read some of the advice from killerqueen. We decided it'd be cheaper to pay for another, more thorough inspection, rather than do a treatment, because the fact was, we hadn't ever actually seen a bug.

We called Boot-a-Pest, and John came out and did a really, really thorough inspection. He worked more slowly and carefully than the inspection from the previous company. Whenever he found a dark spot that looked like blood, he had a special testing thing he did (it was very CSI) to see if it was blood. He took off the covering of the box spring and looked there; he then staple-gunned it back on. He didn't find anything (except one book louse and some spiders). He declared us bedbug free.

John encouraged me to put this information out there, because it does appear that the dog inspections can result in false positives (as well as false negatives). Also, just because you have bites, doesn't mean you have bedbugs in your home.

Finally, I would like to give a huge public thanks to Boot-a-Pest (killerqueen) for helping us with this situation. He was friendly, down-to-earth, and professional. This man knows his bugs -- not just bedbugs but all bugs. I also feel like we could call him again if the bites returned, and he would help us deal with the situation sensibly and effectively. But frankly I hope I never have to call him again. :)

Hi
I'm a newbite from chicago. I bought a brand new sleeper sofa that came with an evil "bonus" and because it was new it never occurred to me that the bites i got within 3 days of having it might be bedbugs until a PCO came to treat for possible fleas, saw a cast bedbug skin on sofa and said it was infested. In the month since getting the new sofa i managed to spread them to my bedroom and a sunroom (my evening routine = i sit on new sofa to watch some tv, go into back sunroom and play with dog, check email in my office, and go to bed -so i was bedbug vector to almost all other parts of the apartment. ARGH). Anyway, I spent 4 days washing, drying bagging all clothing as per PCO requests -also removed switchplates, outlet covers, etc all over apartment although he ended up not reating any of them, don't know why.
He came and treated with steam on sofa and bed, Bedlam on sofa and bed, and phantom on bedroom baseboards, sunroom baseboards, living room baseboards. He didn't treat any of the switchplates or anything in my office despite my request to treat the office (i've been bitten in there -but he said he couldn't find evidence of activity - i have 2 desks, 2 computer chairs, a lateral file, a bookcase and a dresser for off season clothing-he only inspected for -i'm not kidding, 2 minutes-scanned the room and said "no acitivity").

I know, get to my questions (thank you for your patience with my babbling. I think bedbugs cause babbling, at least they seem to in me)

Question1 -since he did not treat in there, can i steam, let dry, and then dust DE (lightly and safely, i read the insanely helpful FAQ and bought a respirator)? i know he doesn't want me doing anything (steaming or vacuuming or mopping or anything) in the rooms he put phantom. Could steaming in an untreated room somehow mess up what he has done in the treated rooms? Note: the office and bedroom share one wall which i could avoid steaming. I do not want to mess up his work, obviously, but also do not want to keep getting bitten in my office (i spend alot of time in there because i am currently working from home). I'll definitely steam all the furniture in there myself (fun weekend ahead) but what about the baseboards?

Question 2 - he used phantom at .125% (i know because he left a list of what was done and where). But everything I've read on here seems to imply it should be .5%? Should i worry it is such a low concentration? Ask him why it is so low? (I don't want to anger him by asking too many questions)

PCO's manager said i should schedule next treatment in 10 days, my PCO says 14 is better. I'm assuming he (PCO) is right, but let me know because I'm the one who schedules the next (final) treatment and i want to get it right (though they'll come back for a month after second treatment if there is evidence - i bought some climbups).

Thank you thank you thank you in advance for answering -this site is so incredibly helpful. Killer Queen, if you read this -please consider cloning yourself and sending a clone to Chicago. Or --maybe a road trip? Soon? :) I'll pay for an inspection, treatment, AND treat you to all the deep dish chicago pizza you could eat (and no snarky comments on chicago vs new york pizza please. :) all pizza is good-- they are just different. three cheers for pizza diversity!)

My landlady has made an appointment with Action Pest Control of New Jersey (www.actionpestcontrol.com) to come and do a K9 inspection of our entire house on Wednesday. I'm having a visual inspection of my apartment tomorrow because it's free. I have found 3 bug samples, 2 or which have been positively ID's as BBs by the company that's doing my free visual inspection, Pest Control Systems of NY (www.pestcontrolsystemsofny.com). I feel good about having two different opinions, and about have both a K9 and visual inspection—and, frankly, about not having to pay for the K9 inspection myself.

But my question is: What are people's experiences with Action's TREATMENT methods. Everything that I've found on the forums so far seems to focus on their K9 inspections methods and not on their actual treatment. There's a thread in which someone from Action even seems to have recommended FOGGING, which is the exact opposite of everything I've read here and everywhere else.

Does anyone have any Action success stories?

Does any one know of a PCO in Raleigh/Durham/Cary, NC that does thermal, vikaine, or has a K-9 for bedbugs?

We have had 5 chemical treatments one bedroom, 3 on 2 of the bedrooms, 2 on other bedrooms and family rooms, and 1 on common rooms. It is complicated why all the rooms are on different schedules. They are treating with multiple chemicals, steam, vaccuum, and dust. All the outlets were also dusted. I saw another bug on the sofa last night. I would like to just throw them away but don't know if it will do any good. I really am going crazy. I posted awhile back. We have a 5,000 square foot home on 3 floors and have 5 kids and 2 dogs.

I don't know how long I can keep living like this and was thinking one of the above methods could give us peace of mind.

Hi all,

So I think I may have carried my bed bugs (which I am not 100% sure I have, but only 99.999999%) from my apt. in NYC to my parents apt. in LA.

While NYC seems to have a pretty good amount of good PCOs, I'm having trouble finding anything for LA, as SoCal does not have a huge bed bug problem like NYC. Can anyone recommend a good PCO (including preferably a K9 dog) in LA to whom I can send my parents? Please let me know.

Thanks.

BuggyinLA on "ThermaPure Heat treatment went terribly, next step?"

I live in a tiny studio apartment in LA and had a ThermaPure Heat treatment provided by Precision Environmental yesterday. After the inspection last week they seemed like a great company - they claimed they could treat our wood floors (where the bugs are likely hiding in HUGE cracks), walls, numerous bags of contaminated clothing from previous failed spray preparations, and our wood furniture. Their very confident salesman told us that our electronics would be safe, that the heat was a low 150 and slow - perfect to kill bugs without any damage to our belongings. Best of all, they claimed to have a 100% kill 30 day guarantee! So after meticulously combing our apartment for candles and aresol cans, and moving our bagged clothes back into the closets (per Precision's instructions), two guys from precision showed up to treat 3 different units in the building. They claimed that anything we cared about should be removed from the apartment- suddenly we had to decide if our laptops and antiques were safe. We tried to stay calm and left.

Twelve hours later we came home to find the company still there. Our apartment was "done" but they were still there working on one of the other "severely infested" units. We walked into an apartment that was largely untouched beyond the bed. Some walls were warm at random, but most everything was cold. Two candles that we had accidentally left upside-down were un-melted. The apartment was not rifled through at all - it was dirty, but it didn't seem like anyone had walked around checking internal temperatures.

Not more than 20 minutes after entering the apartment I saw a bug bed run across the bed. ON THE BED. Assuming that they did bother to point a heater at the bed, our best guess is that the floors and infested clothes were left untouched, so the bugs just crawled back after the heat treatment.

In my panic I squashed the bug, so although I was able to get the technician back into the apartment he didn't believe that there really had been a bedbug. He said that when they were heating there had not been any bugs running around, there was "no visible activity," and therefore they could do nothing. He suggested that we wash all of our clothes again (even though the inspector has explicitly stated that we would not need to wash any clothes. I caught another live bug about an hour later.

So, what's next? I have no idea really. Our management company has decided that Precision can't really solve the problem and that heat won't work, so although they are Precision's client (and I am not), they are uninterested in pushing Precision to do more. Although management is being accommodating their current plan is to have Precision come back in a few weeks and have us move to another building while treating all of our belongings in a PackTite.

I'm looking into the future and all I can see is lost work time, bugs, and living out of an empty apartment. Any advice on advocating that Precision live up to their original 100% claim would be greatly appreciated. We're certainly looking into vikane treatment, and any SoCal experiences regarding that would be great too. We spoke with Lloyd's in Anaheim and they seem like they seem sure that vikane will work, but Precision also claimed that they could solve all of our problems so I'm very skeptical. HELP!

call Mark Campell with Professional K9 Detection @720-225-7177. He and his wonderful dog, Cali, came over to my apartment building to perform a search for bedbugs. I knew we had them, but I didn't know wether they might spread to other locations of the building, or maybe they had come from other locations into ours. Cali found the bugs and Mark spent a great deal of time (several hours total) explaining how these creatures operate, and how to kill them. He knows about PCO's and different products and techniques as well. Because of Mark, I was able to have a PCO focus on the apartment that needed attention, rather than spending a ton of money exterminating the entire building. I was also able to tell the PCO EXACTLY where to put extra attention (suitcase, couch).

Cali made a positive "I.D." on my wife's suitcase. This all but guaranteed that they came from the hotel she stayed in in Chicago. I plan on using Mark again when I purchase a new home. Cali can also detect mold and his other dog can detect narcotics!

Hello All,

I would just like to get some information out there to the community. I live on the Upper West Side in Manhattan in a large multi-unit apartment building. About 2 months ago my roommate's girlfriend started getting bites when she stayed in our apartment. Lo and behold a PCO positively visually identified BBs and it was plain to see that we had a problem.

I immediately contacted my super who informed me that the building had a contract with Terminix. He gave me their preparation instructions and phone number and I called to make an appointment.

On the day of the appointment my roommate and I waited in the apartment and no one came. We called back and were told that no appointment was in their system. This was extremely aggravating but we made another appointment, not knowing what else to do.

On the day of the second appointment... again, no one came. I called to find out what was happening and they explained "Oh, the technician is sick, he's not doing any jobs today". Of course, I wasn't TOLD that my appointment had been cancelled until AFTER I had spent 3 hours waiting. I got a little testy on the phone and they sent someone later that day (luckily I had off).

One technician showed up and told me I had to leave the apartment for a few hours. I went to a coffee shop around the corner and when he was finished he called me from his van, already driving away to tell me he was done. I had no chance to ask him further questions or get his advice on what to do next. All he said was to vacuum up the dust he had spread throughout the apartment the next day.

Needless to say, our BB problem was not solved. So I called Terminix once again. They were supposed to come last Thursday. No one showed up. I made another appointment for this morning and called yesterday afternoon, spoke to the woman who made the appointment to confirm and STILL, no one has come to my apartment. When I have talked to them to find out what's going on they simply say that the technician isn't picking up his phone.

WHAT THE *#&%$!

So please, take it from me, do not hire Terminix for your bedbug problem. They are utterly and totally incompetent, their customer service is clueless and unhelpful, and they have 4 TIMES failed to perform the most basic and fundamental task of any business which is to arrive at scheduled appointments.

i found a bedbug on my sheet last night at around 4am. i lifted my matress up to discover 3 more live ones. i've informed the super and they've called a PCO who is going to come in a week and a half. in the mean time i've been preparing to bag my clothes and wash them in hot water, dry them on hot, and then place them in new bags for use.

my question is, what should i be doing in the mean time? the PCO said to spray the mattress and place DE around the baseboards. a week and a half seems like a long time. i'm also concerned that they're only going to be treating my unit (i live in a three story apartment building mixed residential and commercial). to make matters more complicated i am moving at the end of november.

is it enough to get treated for a month, launder and spray everything, move into a new place and hope for the best? any advice?

i'm a little shaken by this. any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

There are many knowledgeable and skilled bed bug pros and some of them happen to participate here, and we are very grateful. Although it is against the forum rules to advertise, we know that sometimes you might approach one of these folks, in a private message, and ask about treatment.

Before you think about hiring someone from the Bedbugger Forums to do your pest control, I would strongly suggest you do the following:

Ask their real names,
Ask whether they are licensed pesticide applicators/pesticide technnicians, and get their license number.
Ask what business they work for (or run). It should also be licensed.

Laws about who can apply pesticides for hire, to your home, may vary from state to state.

Since a lot of you are in NY state (as am I),
You can click here to see a PDF listing all businesses licensed to apply pesticides. The person you hire should represent a licensed business. You can search, for example, for "Bug Off," "AAA Superior," "Standard," "Boot a pest," and see the name and address of the proprietor.
There is more here about NY state licensing of such businesses. And you can read more here about NY state laws regarding pesticide application.

You should click here to see a PDF listing all licensed pesticide applicators and technicians. The person who does your pesticide application should be on this list.

Again, this is for NY-- laws about who can apply pesticides for hire may vary from state to state.

I hope that bed bug pros who operate in other states, provinces, and countries might give us the low-down on where to check such information in their jurisdictions.

I also want to stress that just because someone is licensed, does not mean they are really experienced with bed bugs. Mere presence on the list of licensed applicators or businesses does not mean you've made the best choice.

Also remember that both the business and the pesticide applicator/tech should be licensed in NY state. These are two different things.

I do think it is a very bad idea to hire someone without a current license to treat your home, no matter how knowledgeable they may appear to you.

I've got a lovely bedbug problem in my apartment in Philly. It's grown serious enough that my roommates are moving out. I just arrived home from a month abroad, and I'm trying to decide whether to deal with this or leave the apartment.

Can anyone share experiences with PCOs in the Philly area? And, are Philly landlords legally obligated to arrange and pay for bedbug extermination?

Given that our current PCO has not found any evidence of bbs, I am considering a getting a dog into inspect, mainly for peace of mind, and to reassure anxious guests and family members.
I came across www.pestguard.ca that offers a canine inspection service in the Ottawa area, which is great news. Does anyone know anything about this service? What should I look for/what questions do I ask them? Roughly how much should I expect to pay (we live in a 1400 sq ft. home).
Many thanks!

Hi all,

A few weeks ago I told my landlord that I found a bug and they needed to come and check the apartment. Then the questions started - have you brought in a mattress, have you stayed at a hotel etc. When the PCO they use called, he kept pushing these questions as well.

I am so terrified of getting this pest that I travel in plastic bags, we have a steamer that we use at least once a week and have a very organized household. I never buy vintage clothes or used furniture. Our bed is enclosed, as well as our pillows and our clothes are permanently in plastic containers in our closets. I would say we are one of the most responsible tenants anyone can have in terms of this pest.

But of course I can't know if I brought this in - I travel a lot through work. I would like the PCO to treat all my bags, but will he then start to blame me, and tell the landlord who will try to force me to pay?

I live in NYC.

Hello,

I am looking for a recommendation for a good PCO in Montreal. I found what looks suspiciously like BB feces, though there wasn't anything else - no marks on sheets, no bites on me or my visitor. Usually no one sleeps in that room, actually, so I don't know why I'd find stuff there and not be having problems in my own room. I was hoping to find someone who could perhaps inspect first...I'm a bit bedbug-phobic (New York friends have had them and told me all the horror stories) so god knows maybe these are just black marks that mean nothing.

I'm a student and freaking out a bit because I have little money, and because it seems there aren't a lot of reviews for good PCOs here. I talked to someone who advertises as "Debbie Expert" who sounds pretty knowledgeable and experienced, although she says she only treats once and that anyone who has to treat twice isn't doing it right...whereas everything I read here suggests two treatments are the minimum. But she has a one-year guarantee and really seems to care about her clients and in keeping up with all the info on BBs.

Please, any advice??? Has anyone worked with her before? Or other PCOs that are effective but not crazy expensive?
Thank you!!

After noticing a few strange bites I decided to have a bed bug detecting dog from M&M come inspect my apartment, even though my own visual inspection didn't reveal any evidence. According to Champ the dog, we've god bed bugs! Champ hit two out of three bedrooms and our livingroom. In one bedroom he hit the bed and a shoe rack and in the other bedroom (mine) he hit the bed and a suitcase I kept under my bed. Champ also hit the couch in our living room. I immediately called my building's management company and they were initially pretty defensive that I had called in the dog without letting them know and contacting the building exterminator first. We just moved in and according to them, there have been no reports of bed bugs in the building before, but one of the mattresses that Champ hit was left by the previous tenant (stupid to hold on to it without at least encasing it, I know) and I can't help but suspect that they had a bed bug infestation, whether they realized it or not. I guess determining how this happened is a moot point and either way, our building's extermination company will handle the treatment free of charge.

While I'm glad not to have to pay for it myself, I spoke to the exterminator and I'm pretty wary of his knowledge. He immediately told me that we need to throw out the mattress that was left in the apartment. I agree that we'd probably feel safer with that mattress gone, but he suggested we just toss it on the sidewalk. When I asked, "Don't we need to take certain precautions when getting rid of these things?" he replied "Just toss it out in the middle of the night. Your building has 30 tenants. No one's going to notice and come knocking at your door to yell at you." No concern for spraying the mattress or covering it with plastic, whatsoever. Ummmmm..... not really the words of wisdom I was hoping to hear from the man in charge of remedying this situation. Basically, I'm wary of the building management's PCO but I know that they're wary of me and my roommates and want to maintain control of the situation. Obviously, its in both of our best interests to take care of this quickly and effectively but I have a feeling we might not agree on what that means and as much as I'd like to have M&M do the treatment, I don't want to pay for it and I'd rather spend my money on a prep service since I'm in the middle of writing my graduate thesis. I'm waiting for the exterminator to get back to me about when he can come in, but in the mean time... any thoughts about how I should handle this and the questions I should be asking my management company/PCO? I'm totally as a loss....

Hi!

I am trying to find help with prep for an older person on a limited income who's living in a residence which is being entirely treated for bedbugs.

I am looking into these companies: Bed Bug Busters and Prep 4 Bed Bugs.

I am not sure either will take on such a small job (doing the laundry and bagging is all we probably need, a few hours' work). But has anyone used them? Or can you suggest other options for this?

We obviously don't want to hire someone who does not have a clue about bed bugs.

After noticing 3 unusual bites I've started to worry that I might have bed bugs. I had two bites on my shoulder and one on my neck and I'd describe them, but from what I've gathered, focusing on the bites won't get you very far since they vary so much. I WILL mention that around the time I noticed the bites (about 3 days ago) I heard a mosquito buzzing around my head while I was sleeping and I saw a mosquito in my room last night. Do I sound crazy? Yes, I probably do but I won't rest soundly until I feel that I've ruled out bed bugs.

I have inspected my boxspring/mattress/bed frame and haven't found any incriminating signs except for one tiny dark brown spot on my sheets and one tiny dark brown spot on my duvet. The one on my sheets is something I'm fairly certain has been there for months (and while I've gotten a few bites here and there throughout the summer, probably 4 or 5 in total, it hasn't seemed like anything beyond the usual occasional spider/mosquito bite). I tested both spots with hydrogen peroxide and nothing happened. I did find a few things in my sheets/mattress pad that I couldn't identify that didn't really look like bed bugs/bed bug skin casts and could just be regular house detritus or lint. I suppose they COULD be skin casts but it's impossible for me to say and I've tried to take pictures but they come out blurry. I put these things in a small plastic bag--how do I go about getting them tested?

I would like to have an inspection done by a k9 and I've made an appointment with Advanced K9 Detectives but I'm at a loss for knowing what questions I should be asking them to make sure that I'm covering all of my bases. Also--I've read the other posts in the forum that mention this company and I'm not entirely satisfied with what I've heard. If someone could recommend any other companies that seem to be the best at k9 inspections, I would really appreciate it.

Also--I went ahead and purchased protect-a-bed covers for my mattress and boxspring, and even got their covers for my pillows though those may just be for allergies. Any thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I abandoned my old apartment and bought new things and thought the problem was over. I put all my clothes in dryers and considered myself bedbug free. But then the bites came back and I keep receiving bites during daytime hours walking down the street or at times when I'm not in bed sleeping. I think they may have infested my backpack or something but I can't find anything. Could they be in my hair? My bed has been treated but I don't find blood spots or signs of near it. I vaccummed with a Eureka allergen vaccuum and threw the bag away immediately. Is there any type of inspector that can ACCURATELY check all crevices furniture and bags in Ohio?

Never does a day go by where there is a thread or a post questioning the procedures of bed bug detection dogs and the owner/handlers. It is beginning to look like the bed bug dog industry is more of a scam then a beneficially accurate service. The companies and their representatives seem to have more excuses for the dogs inaccuracies then Carter has little liver pills.

The dog is sick.
It ate too much.
It didn't eat enough.
It is giving false positives.
It is giving false negatives.
I forgot to give him/her their vitamins.

Their have been contributors to this forum in the past that have attempted to set the record straight informing the readers that false negatives and false positives behaviors represent an untrained dog and handler. Their is no reason for a false positive. or false negative.

Either the dog knows that the scent of the search item or, article or it doesn't. As a K9 officer for 14 years I know this to be true. If I have a k9 looking for a dead body and my dog
alerts me, I dam sure, better produce a dead body. And if I didn't, I would never be a a K9 officer again.

Here is another example; If we have a vehicle and the dog alerts to the presence of drug and no drugs of quantity are found we will cut the carpet out of the car placing it in a special container turning it up side down collecting residual drug product. We then collect the particles. putting them in to a test packet. The dog has never been wrong. And we make an arrest. In the past we would have called that scenario a false positive where the k9 alerts but no quantity or weight was found.

The other scenario is where scent is is masked. Drug runners are notorious for this, They will attempt to pack drugs in coffee of urine soaked diapers. After brain storming with my fellow k9 officers we have determined that the likely hood of masking should, not be a factor in the detection of live bed bugs

What I and my fellow K9 officers are amazed at is that people can go buy a dog that was supposedly trained for bed bug detection, spend one week with the people who sell the dog,
learning the does and don't of dog handling and then feel they have enough confidence experience and knowledge to do bed bug detection work. That is just not reality.

When I was first assigned to my dog I spent twelve weeks with my dog and instructors learning dog behavior while learning about environmental and scent factors. We did over one hundred training scenarios. It takes a canine officer a year with their dog before they feel any degree of confidence. So, when see individuals who go buy a bed bug detection dog and make the claims as professionals charging real money for their service it makes me mad.

When I hear about K9 bed bug services that have dogs that alert and no bed bugs or eggs are found or, the client continues to get bit but no bed bugs were found, I cringe.

Bed bug detection dog sales and detection work is big business. If the bed bug dog company sells 100 dogs they make $850,000 at $8,500.00 a dog. A bed bug detection dog can make over six figures in a year.

It appears the bed bug detection dog industry lacks the integrity to police itself. What is needed is for respective state agencies in charge of pest control to assure that bed bug detection dogs and their handlers can do what they claim they can do.

Someone is probbly going to respond with the comment that having a bed bug detection dog is better than not having a bed bud dog. Not if. the dog and handler make mistakes and don't know what they are doing.

Someone else will probbly make the comment that, not all bed bug dogs and handlers lack accuracy. If they are getting their dogs from the current providers which, there appears to be only two, then they are.

I see that one member has used them for thermal remediation. Has anyone else used them or heard if they are a reputable company? I am getting bitten, but have seen no visible bed bug signs. I had an exterminator here twice, who found no signs either, but I know that doesn't mean I don't have bed bugs, especially since I do have bites. I would like to bring in another exterminator, someone with a lot of bed bug experience and someone who is not going to use scare tactics as I did speak with someone on the phone who told me that I definitely had bed bugs and that he should treat it immediately before it gets out of control!! Hard to believe that someone would take advantage of another who is already suffering such anxiety over all of this!
Thanks for any guidance.

I have been getting bitten for a couple of months, but have had an exterminator here twice who sees no sign of bed bugs. I would like to call in an expert on bed bugs since I am now not sure the guy I called is really all that knowledgeable. I have seen no bed bugs or any of the signs that I have read about on your site. And if I weren't getting bitten by something, the story would end here. New bites yesterday on the back of my upper thigh- two together and one further down. They look like welts that could also look like mosquito bites. I remember feeling like something was biting me yesterday as I drove to an appointment and when I arrived, I checked the back of my thigh and found the one bite. Today I discovered the other two - not sure if they emerged as a latent response or new bites. Perhaps, they are in my car? Or something else that is biting me. At any rate, I want to call someone who is reputable in regard to bed bug detection. Can anyone please help me find someone in the Huntington, Long Island, New York area. I am an hour east of NYC.
Thanks so much for any good leads.
P.S.Oh, and wondering also if I should steam clean my car with a rented industrial steam cleaner or one that I buy or have a service come in and do it?

I finally found out who my Pest Control Peeps were in rainy Vancouver BC. They are a company called IPM Pest Control.

Now to give them the benefit of the doubt I have never ever spoken with my PCO. They come while I am at work and I leave detailed notes of where I have seen activity (what) etc.

Here is my beef with them. I am on my second treatment twice now I have asked in my note (clearly displayed first on my desk, today I left it on my dresser right near my bed / mattress with my prep sheet next to it). Both times the notes have had paper next to it and my cell number on it (in case they didn't feel like writing the information down like they're supposed to). I also explained I have chronic health problems (Lupus, fibromyalgia, asthma, hypothyroidism, Crohns like symptoms... seriously it goes on) and a lot of them have environmental and chemical sensativites that can flare up. So it is a health issue for me. If I have a Lupus or fibro flare chemicals that don't normally bother me can make me very, very, very sick and I need to know what I am exposed to in case I have to go to the E.R.

Both times they left the PCO sheet blank where it asks them to write the information in, they didn't write on my papaer and they didn't phone my cell.

I am also concerned because it leaves me in a position where after treatment I don't know what to do. When should I start vaccuming things? When can I wash my floors again? Can I try X or will it impact what they have done.

I have a call in with them complaining and asking for the information so I will keep things updated. But over all I'm not seeing much integrated pest management.

I'll keep this updated as I get a response (if I get a response).

As it stands I give them two thumbs down.

Edit: Needed to fix my dyslexia... which is a whole other story.

We were told by PCO that bugs were gone but to be sure hired Walter Penny and Mark Campbell of Colorado BB K-9 for an inspection. I told Mark that I had saved a bug for PCO that was in my garage: it was in a plastic zip bag inside a glass jar in a desk drawer. We forgot to tell Walter and when his dog Macaroni went into the garage to inspect furniture he found it!! Then Mark's dog went in too and alerted at the desk. Amazing animals! I am much more confident now that I have had their inspection. The dogs are great and the handlers--Mark and Walter are extremely professional and empathetic, spent lots of time with us calming our fears and answering questions. Bless all FOUR of them!

Hey all,

To make a long story short, I will say that I have had the suspicion that I might have BB's for about 3.5 weeks. I have had three PCO's come in this time. The last one was here on Thursday (from Orkin). He looked at the sofa, the beds, sheets, and box springs and could not find anything (I knew he would not find anything in those places, I look there all of the time and much more carefully than any of the PCO's).

Anyway, it is evident that I have some other bug issues here (ants, silverfish, red flour beetles). This PCO wants to start treating the place for these pests now. I asked him if I should wait until I was more certain about the BB's:

Me: "Won't your treatment possibly drive BB's deeper into hiding and make it harder to detect a problem?"

Orkin Guy: "Of course not, it won't affect them at all...Plus, if you do find a BB problem you will qualify for a discounted treatment..."

Isn't treating for other bugs a bad idea when you have a possible BB problem? Is this guy ignorant, trying to rip me off, or thinking that I am just paranoid and ignoring the BB talk?

I have (well, my house has) bedbugs.

Does anyone have suggestions for PCOs in Indiana? I will check Angie's List, but its categories are for general pest extermination so many of the comments are not relevant.

I know which company offers ThermaPureHeat; it appears that the other thermal treatments aren't offered here.

I do not know of any companies that use dogs (and would welcome hearing of them). Likewise, I am not sure if Vikane is available here (from someone who knows what they are doing),

Of course, if you also have a cautionary tale of a PCO here, I would want to know that. Perhaps you could pm me if you don't want to post those comments to a forum.

I have searched 3-4 PCO and trying to determine between two co.

One co. has a 9 month guarantee but requires an eight hour treatment once a month at $750 a pop for three months. This one uses Bedlam, Suspend SC, Kicker, Drione, and Exciter.

The other is one heavy treatment then another treatment not so intense one week later and two weeks later is same at $1300 for all times. And a 30 day guarantee. This one uses Tri die, Cy Kick, 565 Plus, and Talstar.

We haven't a full infestion and not experiencing bites but have found numerous casings. Is the first killing a bedbug with a sledgehammer (overkill) and will I get the same results with the less expensive one.

I just want this over and done with but not break the bank.

We just had our visit with Terminix and I'm not terribly impressed. The guy claimed the following things that contradict all of my research on bed bugs:

1. Other companies comes two or three times, but Terminix only needs to come once.
2. Bed bugs don't nest in books or electronic equipment.
3. If it can't be washed, it doesn't need to be treated.

Their treatments involve wet steam and CO2 on beds and furniture, but I've read that dry vapor should be used and that freezing doesn't work, and aerosol and dust in cracks and crevices. The dusts could be Drione or Alpine and the aerosols could be Tri-die, Alpine, or PI. I can get all of these products myself, so why should I pay a PCO $600 + $150 per room to apply them?

He said that we should unpack everything (we just moved in), but he also said that we should bag things after washing them which doesn't make much sense. Either we should bag or not, right?

I'm also not terribly impressed that they sent a salesman who admitted he knows more about termites and had to call someone else to find out what chemicals they use.

We have a Packtite ordered that should arrive today, so I'm fine with whatever can go in there not being treated by the PCO, but what about stuff that doesn't fit? Should those things be bagged and boxed? Destroyed and trashed? Close my eyes, cross my fingers, and hope for the best?

Any suggestions for a reliable PCO that treats in HoCo (Columbia), MD would be hugely helpful.

I think my boyfriend *might* have bed bugs. However, I'm still not convinced either way. There is some evidence that it might be a problem with gnats or fleas. Is there a knowledgeable/trusworthy company in the New York area that can provide a free inspection to identify the problem? If it's not bed bugs, it's definitely something else, and I'd like to figure out what it is as quickly as possible.

I know of a few friends who had free "inspections" where the PCO would say there were bed bugs even when there weren't any. Even some places which used dogs were unreliable.

Hey Guys,

I've had bed bugs for about 5 months now. I've identified what the problem was about a month ago, but my girlfriend has been getting bites long before that (although I've never had a single visible bite..some people don't react to them). We identified my couch as the original source of the infestation. I had Orkin come out twice...once for the original treatment which covered the entire apartment and the second which seemed to be a more touchup job treating the couch and other likely hiding spots. Unfortunatly he couldn't get to all the places in the couch that I would have liked and I am still seeing the bugs. The couch must go! I have since isolated my bed and the bites have pretty much stopped entirely. My girlfriend did get a couple of fresh bites in the last week but it was nowhere near the 5 to 10 bites daily from a couple of months ago!!

I have read through the facts and stories on this site and I am both more educated and horrified at what this might take to finally get rid of these parasites! I'm wondering if there are other more effective PCO's out there. Orkin told me the use a microsphere type poison cocktail that keeps killing bugs for months, but I'm not totally convinced this will get all of them. I'm just wondering if I will just be able to control (not totally eliminate) these bugs and if I should expect another infestation down the road. Also, should I expect to do multiple treatments until the bites stop. I know this is a grey area but any advice on this would be helpful.

Thanks,

Hello helpful bedbuggers!

I am hoping someone can provide a link that explains the steps a good PCO will take during an inspection, how long it takes, and why.

The PCO my building is using for another infested unit came to look at my apartment. He only inspected my mattress, did not look in any seams or under the box spring, and when I asked why he didn't do a more thorough inspection he told me "Because I am an EXPERT and what takes other people an hour takes me only 3 minutes." I asked him if bugs are only on mattresses and he said no, and could not give a reason why he didn't look at anything else in my apartment. I tried to get an answer out of him of why he is refusing to inspect my apartment and he laughed in my face.

I would like to print something out to give to my LL.

I've only come across one person who specializes in detection with dogs but he worked with a trainer no I doubt they're k9 certified. And I don't think the company that's doing my work is very good as they seem to expect to find blatant evidence, but after looking at Lou Sorkin's photos of nymphs, it seems they could be easy to miss.

Does anyone know of a good PCO and K9 in the RI area?

I have no idea how to find a pest control operator in NW Iowa that is educated in getting rid of these. The yellow pages doesn't even list anyone that even mentions bed bugs in their ad.
I am at the end of my rope and have no idea where to turn for help.
If anyone can help me with some information on this I would appreciate it.
We have tried to eliminate them ourselves but still have some signs of bugs.

I never personally had any experience in the past with ScherZinger pest control. But when I found out I had bed bugs I contacted the condo association where I live and they contacted ScherZinger. After putting me off for a week, FINALLY someone from ScherZinger came out to do an inspection. I already knew I had bed bugs but according to them this is routine and mandatory. In my opinion just an excuse for them to get paid for something. They already took over a week even sending someone out. If I had not started treating myself immediately I would have had an infestation. And everyone else in my complex would probably have them coming from my condo. After leaving several messages on the inspector's voice mail. Also leaving a message with my condo association and talking directly to the receptionist at ScherZinger who informed me she would page the inspector and I would for sure receive a call back that day. It was not until 2 weeks later after the original inspection I received a call back. The inspector said he had to know what day I would be available so he knew when they would have someone available to come out. This was last week. He said he would give me advance notice so I could do all the things that needed to be done on the procedure list to do before treatment was done. Also when the inspector came and did his inspection he did not do much at all. In my opinion he did not even do an inspection. If I did not actually show him the bed bugs I had kept I don't think he would ever know we had any bed bugs at all. And he also acted like he was afraid of the bugs when I showed them to him. What kind of person works for a pest control company and is afraid of bugs? I think this is the worst company ever I had to deal with!! They are probably getting paid by my condo association for nothing. I think this company is a scam and since bed bugs are such a huge epidemic ScherZinger is taking it to their advantage to rip people off. I plan of making a complaint with ScherZinger directly as well as my local better business burea. I just want to get the word out to others about what a scam this company is. If I had not treated myself for the bed bugs I do not even want to imagine how badly I would have had bed bugs by now. I have not saw any bugs or signs of them in 9 days now. I actually feel safe about sleeping in my own bed again. And I did all the work! I used Steri-Fab and then Ultraside.

Who should I trust?

I have two tentative contracts for treatment in 5 days. I need to hire one for certain. So far, the one who does not recommend steam seems to be answering all my questions the way I expected from the research I've done. The only issue I have with the company is this avoidance of steam. I've read on here that steam combined with chemicals is the way to go.

Any advice would be really helpful. I'll be starting the laundering and bagging process tomorrow.

Hi,
I live in a 2 Bed apt in Sunnyvale. My parents found bugs in their bedroom. My mom squashed one
and a PCO recommended by our apartment management identified them as bed-bugs. The complicating factor is that my wife is in the first trimester of her pregnancy and most websites advise avoiding exposure to pesticides during pregnancy. I immediately quarantined that room, threw out the mattress, furniture etcetera from that room. I also thoroughly vacuumed that room and disposed
off the bag in a sealed cover. I am hoping that the bugs will not spread to the hall and our bedroom if we don't go into the infested room. However after researching the web, I feel that this is wishful thinking and it is only a matter of time that the bugs spread. I would like your informed
comments on this issue.
Please also give recommendations for PCO's in Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, San Jose, Mountain View area of California. It would be great if the PCO does not use or minimizes use of chemicals due to
my wifes pregnancy.
Thanks in advance.

So where to begin. I live in the East Village of Manhattan. Fifteen months ago I was working on a project and bedbugs were discovered in my dressing room. I suddenly was breaking out in what i thought at the time were mosquito bites, but upon further inspection they of course turned out to be bb bites. A friend of mine on my block who had suffered a terrible infestation the year prior came over immediately and inspected my apartment. The day before I had just started to spray rubbing alcohol everywhere to see if there was anything on the surface. Sure enough I flushed out an adult bb which I still have suspended in alcohol in a film cannister. My friend then very patiently waked me through the ins and outs of diy pest control. I ordered the NY apartment package from domyownprestcontrol.com and set to work. I removed everything from the apartment, and either trashed it (labelled of course) or ran it through the wash and hot dryer. The treatment included drione dust, bedlam, and gentrol. I went easy on the gentrol and was able to control the problem.

I had no further bites for over a year. Or so I think. I'm fairly certain my significant other is not allergic to the bites or just hasn't gotten bitten. We found that the bb we found was resting and defecating my digested blood on my side of the bed. Well, it's a modern Italian sleeper sofa made of two foam pieces covered by a wool. The bb was in the velcro seam where the cover attached to the bed. At the time it seemed as though I may have brought the bb in from the job I was working on. Who knows. I live in a 40 unit building in New York City so it may have happened anywhere.

About 11 months later (this past June) I got a bite on my arm that reacted very differently from my previous bb bites. It was indurated and had a ring. I did not test for Lyme, but that's what I thought it was. I now know it was the return of the bb saga. I'm still not sure how long it takes for my body to react so I don't know if I got bit at the beach where I was spending a few weekends or whether it was the apartment. Over the next few weeks I got one or two large welts (never 3) that itched intensely. I wanted to believe they werre just bad mosquito or spider bites. yes, even after having confirmed bb bites the previous year, I was in denial. Until one night this week, I got 3 large welts spaced fairly far apart on my back, and I knew a bb was biting me.

Yesterday I hired a canine inspection from M and M Environmental. i called the night before and they arrived the next morning at 9:30 am. I decided to just pay the dough and not deal with my landlord (he's not the most responsive of landlords). The dog came into the studio apartment and had positive hits on the feather bed we use on top of the sofa bed and on the sofa bed itself. The inspector said it was a 'localized' finding, meaning that there were not signs of major infestation, and there were no other hits in the apartment. To be honest, the inspection felt a little quick, but I guess once you get a positive result, you just want them to go back again and again to confirm. He told me that wasn't necessary. So I started bagging things up. I put the feather bed in a trash bag which I sealed and put a sign on it which said "do not take...BED BUGS." But that was just extra precaution because I walked it down to the trash this morning and waited on the sidewalk with my coffee until the garbage trucks came to pick it up and make sure no one took it home. And last night I encased the sofa in a tarp with duct tape, not before steaming every inch of it with a garment steamer. I know dry steamers are supposed to be better, but the heat I'm told in a garment steamer is high enough to destroy bbs and their eggs. Strange thing--as I was laying out the tarp (probably 2 am or so) I noticed a red splotch on the underside. I lifted the clear tarp and saw that it was blood and that there was a smashed bb next to the spot. I guess I stepped on it as it was trying to run. I hadn't seen it earlier. It was an adult and it is now saved in the film cannister. Not sure if he/she has friends, but am proceeding as if that is true. I called the landlord this morning but haven't heard back yet. Not sure where they are coming from, but I am going to protect my apartment. Probably not with M and M though. I spoke to them after the inspection and they gave a very long and expensive sales pitch of what needed to be done.

I just wanted to share my story. I seem to be a lot more freaked out this time than I was 15 months ago. You'd think it would be easier to deal with it a 2nd time, but I think what I'm responding to is the seeming futility of it all. I was very diligent in treating my apartment, but one false move, by you or a neighbor, and you're back to square one. I know many will say I or my landlord should have hired a PCO in the beginning, but the treatment and materials I used were very close to what i would have had to pay 20 times as much for. I have a house in the country so tomorrow I have a canine inspection there with Charlie of Quest and we'll see if there was cross contamination. God I hope not. But I'm prepared. Seems like it will be easier to deal with in a structure with no neighbors. I know that's not entirely true, but at least I will have more control. And yes, regardless of the results tomorrow, I have mapped a plan for traveling between the two places and making sure there is no traveling of bbs with me. I'll keep you posted.

Hi All,

The following is not an endorsement -- I cannot recommend this company and do not have any experience with them.

However, I appreciate that it is not always easy to find whether services are available, and so we do post (and allow the non-spammy posting of) these kinds of things.

Hi “Nobugs”,

I have been a long time follower of your website, and appreciate all the hard work and effort in educating people in the battle against bed bugs.

I’m not sure whether or not you post information on new companies? And I didn’t want to of course post a comment myself ... so I thought I would send you a note letting you know of that I have just launched a new company in Canada called www.thebedbugtracker.com we are Canada’s first and only NESDCA certified company and people are very interested.

It would be great if you could share with your audience as I know there are several Canadians (Torontonians) that follow your site. I’ve attached the press release for you to scan.

Let me know your thoughts, and have a fantastic day!

Hi,

I've been living in my studio apartment in Soho for a little less than a year and have suffered through a mouse infestation, plumbing problems and now beg bugs. Now this is not a complaint about my landlord as they have been prompt in dealing with the first two problems but bed bugs seem much tougher to get rid of. I don't even know how these pests got here because I've only been noticing an abnormal amount of bites pretty recently (2-3 months ago); since I am prone to being bitten by mosquitoes I just assumed it was that until I saw a bug on the mattress. I inspected the sheets and found little black spots and when I lifted the mattress I saw another bug which I smacked and then flushed down the toilet.

Anyway I am extremely miserable and paranoid right now and pretty much stay up until 6am at times because I really don't want to go to bed in my apartment... So I'm asking you to please recommend a PCO who is able to get rid of these things. My studio is VERY small and there's really nothing here except a bed (just a mattress actually...), a desk and a computer. I am a poor student so I would really like if I didn't have to spend a fortune but if it gets these things out of my life forever, I guess I'd be willing to pay whatever the cost. Thank you for reading.

We have bed bugs in my very tiny 1 bdr apt. It's pretty severe, I see them all the time. My fiance is very sensitive to the bites and is covered in red marks. My landlord had terminix come in. They sprayed part of the room, claimed to have treated the mattress, ignored the bed frame and gave no advice. We cleared the bedroom, threw out the frame, it was totally infested, bugs everywhere. I'm vacuming the room daily, and killing the bugs whenever I see them. We covered our mattress with one of those zip up allergy plastic deals I duct taped the zipper shut, and put another cover on that. Then we put the bed in the living room. It's a new mattress, otherwise we would just toss it, but we just bought it a few months ago.
Last night was fine, and now my fiance got bit again, i found 3 baby bed bugs on the bed.
We are moving in a few weeks, so terminix can do what they will here, but I need to know what to do with my stuff. Can they get in books, dvds, electronics, pictures??? I checked all the books and such from the bedroom and the shelves they were on, and didn't see any bugs or evidence of them.
I have all my clothes bagged, we washed and dried them. We're going to dry them on hot again before we bring them into the new apartment, but what about my furniture? I don't see them on anything in the living room, but I don't want to bring them into the new apartment.
Any advice?

I just spent some time reading the forums. We already moved the mattress yesterday. Should I move it back into the bed room? I threw out the bed frame so it would be on the floor, if that matters

Also, the guy from terminix said to use contractor garbage bags, would the ziplock ones be better?

Thanks!!

Their dog alerted to several spots in our house today and my husband STILL won't believe we have bbs. Its true we have no evidence, no blood spots, no casts, no sightings so he's struggling with this but the dog certainly reacted as the handler said he would.

Has anyone here used Richie (handler) and Sara (dog) from this company? I have been cleared twice by another bed bug dog (visits were 8 weeks apart, most recent was last week), but I have seen blood spots on the sheets twice since Friday and my husband was bitten once by something....

We haven't done any treatments yet, because we were hoping it's nothing, but I am really nervous now. What happens if the dog clears us again?

Landlord agreed to consider another PCO if I put him in contact with them.. we've had a guy come in a couple times, but he was completely ineffective. He's just been spraying bedlam, etc.

Preferably a process that doesn't require rebagging, packing etc. everything again.

I'm in a studio apartment.

Any recommendations, guys?

Hi!
I'm talking to an exterminator who does K9 sweep and treats with steam & a combination of chemicals. He gave me a list of 5 chemicals w/fact sheets and I see only 2 are labeled for controlling bedbugs. Here's the list --- what do you think?

Temprid SC Insecticide: Sheet does not mention controlling/killing bedbugs

Gentrol IGR Concentrate: Controls bedbugs

Masterline Bifenthrin 7.9 Termiticide/Insecticide: Controls bedbugs

Prescription Treatment Perma-Dust pressurized Boric Acid Dust: does not mention controlling bedbugs

Pyrocide 100: sheet does not mention controlling bedbugs
