So last night I slept like a dream. No bites even (but i have a theory to that) That glass of wine did me some good.

My husband and I decided that it would be best to start from scratch. we've come up with a game plan to help rid us of these nasty blood sucking vermin. First we're starting with our matresses since we can't afford the nice(r) covers. We bought a two air beds and set up our son's last night.

First step was getting the bed out to the dumpster. I pulled off all of the sheets and put them in a garbage bag and proceeded to lift the matress. We noticed at the foot of his bed there was about a 6 inch tear in the encasement! EEK! This left me nauseous to think what we might find on the box spring by his head (where the switch plate is covered in blood spackles). I lifted up the matress and screamed! I dropped it as quickly as I could and almost went into a panic attack as my husband starting laughing!

"what the F@#& is so funny!" i yelled at him as he died in laughter. He was at the head of the bed in tears from laughing so hard. He lifted the matress back up, still in hysterics and showed me what was so funny.

What I thought to be about 10 adult bed bugs (i dropped the matress so quick i didn't get a good look) was purple NERDS (the candy). At that point i started laughing, and crying in relief! Appearently our son had hid some of his halloween candy in between his box spring and matress and the box busted open!

LOL go ahead and laugh, you know you wanna. Besides it will do you some good!

As for my theory about why i didn't get any bites, I vaccumed the hell out of his room after moving the bed out. His box spring didn't have any tears in the encasement, but to be on the cautious side it went out the door. I took the vaccume wand and got all around the phone jacks and swich plates, behind his movie case along the celing and blinds and then all along his closet and shelving. The only bugs that i've ever seen in our room was nymphs which i believed to be coming from the switchplate that was by his head. The walls connect and our bed was against that wall. Today we're throwing out our bed and couches and we will be overly prepped and ready when the PCO gets here tomorrow!

Wish me luck I'm going into this hellstorm with DE, ziplocks, a lighter and maybe some hairspray too! ;)

Since our friendly neighborhood bedbugs moved in with us we've had to change a few things around here.
My husband is no longer allowed to wear his black socks to bed. I got tired of getting the magnifying glass and examining little bits of lint!
I rise at dawn with the sun glaring down on me since I had to replace my chocolate brown blackout curtains with white sheers.
My bedroom no longer has a Native American motif since the colors were shades of brown and beige and that makes it hard to find little black specks. Now it looks like we're sleeping in a hospital with all the white!
My nighties were tossed and I now sleep in long sleeves, high neck and long pants. Yep, does wonders for your sex life NOT! :-)) Speaking of which...who in their right mind is going to take all their clothes off in bed anyway??? Seems like inviting them in for dinner.
We no longer eat any kind of seeded bread, bagels, rolls, etc. Maybe never will again. :-(
And last but not least, most of our clothes are too tight becasue of the constant washing in hot water and drying. Oh well, I needed to lose some weight anyway.
See? There IS a bright side if you only look for it.

I have had some pretty panicked moments these past few weeks.. some very funny..
I was sitting at the Computer Reading this site while my 22 month old was watching Super Why an having a good old time jumping around I look back at her and looked at my freshly Windex TV (big screen) OH MY GOODNESS 5 HUGE BB... I made a V line to the TV I grabbed some diaper wipes on the way there they are disposable and started killing them NOT BB just Chocolate milk (Spill proof sippy cups...NOT...).... *Deep breath*
I was having breakfast and some of that perfect toast just out of the toaster light butter and Strawberry Jam...As I put it up to my mouth BB Crossed my mind I Got sick to my stomach and had to throw all the strawberry jam away along with that perfect toast... ( I love Toast)..
And tonight the whole reason for thread....
I was walking past my daughter who was having her evening snack before bed time and after Dinner...( I cook a lovely meat loaf, with mash taters, peas and carrots and Mac and cheese.. And some Cheese Toast...I had mater sandwiches (Tomato sandwiches with mayo and light salt I am addicted I know gross I cant help my self...)Well MY 22 month old has to have her snack or she screams... And I pick and choose my battles with her.... very strong willed..)Well Her snack is Coco Pebbles.. I only allow Her to have what she can fit in her hand then I hide the Box...She ended up throwing them on the floor.... When I was done with the dinner dishes I walked in to the dinning room where all the kids were snacking and saw a big pile of BB... Below her feet.. Grabed her sent the kids out of the room I went psychotic... I started to reach for the OHDM( WAIT I CANT THE KIDS ARE IN THE HOUSE) and I wasn't prepared to spray... So I grabbed the next best thing my handy Murphy's oil soap...I started spraying like a mad woman NO movement... What are they already dead I thought to my self.. NOPE it was just Coco Pebbles in a pile.. *SIGH* Thank goodness...
Hope this makes you laugh cause it did me....
I had to get it off my chest..

So Thank you for every thing you do and I probably don't know 80 percent of it but from what I saw it really is hard work... Especially the whole pesticide thing I came to the front door to ask a my husband a question who was stupid enough to be inside while they were spraying.. not in the same room and the windows were open and the central heat was up to 90... .. I almost passed out I had to turn around and walk to the middle of the front yard and sit down I wont do that again...So thank you... would any one else like to say thank you to there PCO...

buggyinsocial suggested that we draft a "Top Ten" list for BBs. Here's a list I've come up with ... if anyone has anything to add, please feel free!!

Buggyinsocial, this is for you:

TOP TEN WAYS TO KNOW YOU'RE BATTLING BEDBUGS:

1. You can debate the pros and cons of every brand of garbage bag.
2. Your vacuum is your best friend.
3. You can name at least 4 pesticides, yet you can't name 4 new movies that will open next month.
4. Your idea of a spa treatment involves showering and calamine lotion.
5. Ghost stories don't scare you but bug-feces do.
6. You think that you will encounter less bugs camping than you will at a five-star hotel.
7. You're on a diet not because you are fat, but because all of your clothes shrunk in the dryer.
8. Debugging is no longer a computer term.
9. The Vaseline next to your bed is not for moisturizing purposes.
10. Going TO your job is your de-stressor.

I sometimes find interesting things on the Bed Bug Registry, when I poke around neighborhoods I am familiar with in various cities.

This entry on a Chicago address in the bed bug registry contains two reports:

Found 2 reports:

Submitted by "annonymous" on 09/01/2009

found 8-31-09

Submitted by "Anonymous" on 04/22/2009

Client with bed bugs at this location. 4/22/09

If people submit a report for their clients and others they know, the registry would have a lot more data.

I wondered if this was a social worker, PCO, or some other kind of professional reporting for a client who could not or would not.

Hi all this may sound a little wierd but I have been bitten nearly every day for 3-4 weeks now and I am the only one in my family of 4 being bitten. They mainly occur on my lower left leg, although I have had 3 on my right lower leg (separate bites) and 3 on my left hip (all at the same time). I have been up at all hours of the night inspecting my bed with a magnifying glass! but I have not seen any bb. The only other thing I can seem to associate it with is when I wear my ugg boots!. Does anyone think that something could be living in them? I have had them in a clear plastic bag to see if anything wandered out and nothing did. help I am getting really stressed out with these mysterious bites.

~~It took me about a second weather or not to tell my family!! It was hard to admit to them that I had BB But I got to thinking hay If I don’t tell them I take the chance of never getting rid of them!! we all go to our family and friends house and sit at the table or on the couch and some times on the floor and the kids are all over the place so I had too couldn’t let the fact I was embarrassed get in the way of defeating the lil blood suckers… I had to inform a lot of them that they were actually real to begin with!! I had to tell them about the whole furniture thing and second hand stuff!! One of my Family members pick stuff up from the side of the road!! I told them it was like having fleas roaches and lice all at one time!! and how hard it was to get rid of!! I opened most of there minds to doing stuff like encasing there beds and keeping the clutter down!! And actually checking there beds ,walls and furniture and not to pick stuff off the side of the road~~~ I don’t think I will ever step into a second hand store to buy anything ever again , I will never except anything used again I don’t care if it is a family air loom~~ any body have anything else to add~~did you tell~~

So it's been 7 weeks since I last spotted a bedbug. I was bit by something once the day after my last treatment a month ago, but I wonder if it's a bedbug since I haven't seen anything or been bitten since the visual verification 7 weeks ago.

Before the first treatment I spent a week and a half vacuuming and steaming everything with this: Conair Deluxe Garment SteamerI had most of my stuff sealed up in airtight containers and put into storage. I went back a week before my second treatment to check to make sure everything was OK and there weren't any holes. Anything with holes got repacked. I've been vacuuming a few times a week since then and spraying my bed with steam every few days. Not enough, I know, but there are only so many hours in the day. Everything I've owned up til now has been living in bags. I spent a good $200 on plastic bags. There was probably another $30 spent in one week on laundry. I bought a bunch of large plastic bins to store the things in plastic bags that weren't going into storage. The mattress and box spring are encased in an encasement. Nothing on the walls, nothing in the drawers, nothing in the closets for 2 months (other than everything in the kitchen and bathroom, the PCO said it's OK to leave everything there).

Now, because of me not working and not wanting to overextend my credit cards, I have to take everything out of storage. I'm currently vacuuming and steaming everything once again. The storage place is 3/4 miles away, which is close enough not to warrant spending the money on a van to bring everything back, but far away enough that putting everything into one of those laundry carts and hauling it back has become quite a pain in the butt (I walked 5 miles on 3 trips today, and have spent about 3 or 4 days similar to today). Since my apartment is small, I also didn't want to fill up the place with too much stuff because we wouldn't be able to move anywhere. Now I'm resteaming everything and revacuuming. If I had help, it wouldn't be as bad but my husband works 12 hours a day and nobody really wants to step into an apartment that once had bedbugs. So far I only found 2 things with mold, black mold, but that seams to be the extent of the damage in storage. So far no signs of bugs or feces. I haven't quite hit the 55 day mark, but since it was a new infestation at my old apartment and the known infested items I threw out while I was there, I'm hoping the few insects I found here were just stragglers and they didn't breed and have babies and produce happy loving homes.

My sleep schedule is finally becoming a little more normal. I went to bed at 11pm the other night which was nice. I'm hopeful, I bought DE which will be spread around the baseboards. I still get that heroin feeling all the time still, like bugs are crawling on you, but I was staying at a friend's once and I was sleeping in her attic and felt itchy, so I think it might be psychosomatic. I feel hopeful, but the paranoia is still there so I'm still queasy whenever I think there's a sign they might be there, and relieved once I find out it's not it.

The only thing that makes me paranoid right now is the sweet smell in the apartment. I catch a wiff every now and then. And the meter room (I live in a basement and it's in my living room) smells really sweet, so I wonder if it's the wood or if they're living there. So I'm hoping I'm paranoid on that one, but I sprayed DE everywhere in there just in case.

I have joined the ranks of everyone else here...I've got bed bugs. Come Friday they will be treating my apartment. Which means lots of preping. I just need some advice from others on how to handle this. I don't have a lot of money so I can afford that wonderful Packtite thing, or a bunch of plastic bins or enough ziploc bags to supply the army...My plan right now is to bag clothes and bedding. Wash and dry anything dirty and just dry everything that's already clean. It will all stay bagged up for quite some time after that until i'm confident the infestation is gone, except for daily use items, those will be bagged a bit different since i have to use them.

Oddly enough the infestation is basically in my living room furniture. I have yet to find a bug in my bedroom but i'm having them treat it anyway just to be on the safe side. It also seems to be a light infestation....i have only seen a few bugs, a few minor bites on myself, none on my boyfriend...no droppings or nests.

So here are my questions....
1. What do I do with all the other stuff? Items in my room and living room like books, dvd's, knicknacks...stuff like that. I understand I need to clean random stuff out of the drawers as well as clothes but i'm not quite sure what i'm supposed to do with it. I live in a very tiny one bedroom apartment so i don't have a lot of space to move things.

2. I have 2 cats. How has this effected pets of others out there? How long do i need to keep them from the treated areas?

3. Do I need to clean everything out of my closets? One of the two closets in my bedroom is full of tools for working on cars and stuff...should I leave those there or do they need to come out too?

4. My file cabinet sits next to my bed and it's full of papers that i need on a regular basis...Any suggestions there?

5. Living room electronics and cat jungle gym...Do i need to move them or disassemble the jungle gym?

Any advice would be great.

happened to be looking at the CB2 site (little brother to crate and barrel) and i saw this bed.

since its white and made out of steel i thought it would be good for those inflicted with bedbugs. plus you dont use a box spring with it. and you wouldnt need side tables.

it does have wooden slats on the bottom i guess, but maybe those could be treated and easily inspectable?

anyway, its kinda cute too...in a very modern way: http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=400&f=4701

hi im new on here so im not quite sure if im doing this correct (if this is the spot to ask questions and get feedback). i read some of the new subscriber stuff but quickly because i just want to see if i can get some feedback quickly because i have that creepy-crawly feeling. anyways i noticed one day ago (tues 25th) i had these little red bumps on the tops of my things probably about 20-30 on the left thigh and maybe about 10-15 on the right (and there was nothing on my thighs on monday nothing). these little bumps almost appear to be pimple like some of them have little white head and when i squeeze them pus comes out (im sry it sounds gross). now, they are not itchy, i didnt really notice them being itchy on tuesday when they first appeared (im on medication that makes me a tad itchy so i didnt tell if it was the bumps or my meds, but if anything it may have been itchy for a minute and not the bump itself it was kind of around them but it was never super itchy). they are not in a cluster or row they are just randomly spread out over my thighs. i looked online trying to find out what these could be and i can across bed bugs and got totally freaked out. i also saw that when you have them you can get spots on your mattress. well i have black spots on my mattress. they are about the size of a tic tac some a little bigger and some a little smaller (but not very big or very small). i cut a hole in the mattress to see if i could find any waste or casts from them and couldnt find anything. i did notice that the black spots were only on the top part of the foam that touches the cloth that is the outside of the mattress (so if u were to cut a mattress you would cut the top cloth part and then there would be foam and under the foam is something else and then spings and so on, the black spots were only on the top of the mattress and the top part of the foam thats right underneath the top of the mattress and the spots didnt go through to the other side of the foam). so im not sure maybe its mold on the mattress and im having some weird break-outs or something on my legs. im really not sure. please let me know if you think this could be or is bed bugs. any feed back you have would be greatly appreciated!!!! and im crawling out of my skin!!! thank you

ps sorry for the run on sentences and bad punctuation - i was trying to be quick

About 3 weeks ago I found a bed bug on my couch. I found it because I felt an itch on my back and when I checked it looked like a insect bite. So I started to freak out because my building has just been notified of a bed bug infestation in many of the apartments: a line, b line and c line...I live on an F line where there have been no complaints but I'm aware of how these things travel, so when I felt the bite I freaked out and started looking and I found it! Killed it! and began looking for more. I took down curtains, flipped my mattress, checked the crevices of the couch, my daughters crib and play pen, threw away clutter, and found nothing. I have not been bitten again. I am super paranoid, refuse to sit on my couch, and go to bed with a flashlight. I even bought DE and sprinkled it on the perimeters of the apartment, in furniture and around bed legs. I no longer sleep well and am constantly feeling phantom bites, meaning I scratch but nothing is there. My daughter has not been bitten at all. Could one have gotten in? if so that means more can get in...what can I do to help prevent an infestation. My lease isn't up until next may which means i have no choice but to stay... and when I do move I plan on leaving everything behind. I don't want to risk bringing anything with me. I need some words of encouragement... Or should I be freaking out?

Hi my name is Cassi. I have a 4 month old daughter also. Her name is Madelynne, we have been living in the same apartment for over 5 years now. Before my daughter was born we purchased a bassinett from Wal-Mart. After my daughter was about 2 months old I started seeing red bumps, friends and physicians said it was her getting used to her new skin or something like that. Then I started noticing bugs in the bassinett. When I showed my husband he said they were beetles from leaving the windows open. We took the bassinett back to Wal-Mart, they didnt want to take it back, but I still didnt know it was bed bugs. About 6 weeks ago I started getting bit. I went to the Dr. she said it was impentigo, I took the antibiotics they didnt work. I went back to the Dr. she gave me more antibiotics, It was my daughters peditrician who told me it might be scabies. Then we started researching and found out its bed bugs. When I contacted the realtor that we rent off of she then told me that our neighorbor complained about bedbugs about4 months ago. He said that the guy that lived above him had them first, he said he could see them crawling down the wall. The upstairs guy is changing apartments and he did the diy treatment and sent the bedbugs to the rest of our neighbors. When I read ur story it hit home I am also a stay at home mom and with a new baby times are really hard. The landlord told us we might have to pay for the extermination but I will fight her on that. She told me they wouldnt mind exterminating roaches but that bed bugs were our responsibility. I dont know what the difference is. But I am so agitated with this. Im embarrassed and scared what if one of our friends got them while visiting us.....I hear about people suing all the time I am not one to jump into a lawsuit but I am considering suing Wal-Mart, I am so angry that my daughter slept with bedbugs for the first 4 months of her life. I am so paronid about it being on her toys pacifers, clothes, crawling in her ears....I'm not fortunate enough to be able to stay with family members, we cant afford a hotel, so just know it could be worse. You could still be living with the bugs, but its so much worse when u know.

I thought it was interesting. I live in Jacksonville, FL and I was driving around today and sawa a billboard advertising a bed bug dog services! You really don't hear much about them down here so I thought it was cool. Too bad we're moving or I would use them if we ever get bed bugs. Too bad there doesn't seem to be many services where we're moving (Washington). If anyone is interested the dog's name is Abbey. I can't remember the name of the company but maybe you could find it by googling.

I moved into a senior citizen's 53 unit complex in March '09, and found out the 1st day I had cockroaches, and then a week later bed bugs. My suite had been treated 6 times during the previous 6 months, other suites had all been treated last September '08 and several treatments after that. Supposedly there was a check every 3 months after, but that was never done. When my place was treated, all other suites were not treated. Was told that bed bugs were too lazy and would not attempt to move such a distance. The day I moved in, the tenant in opposite suite moved out and subsequently found out that there was a very heavy infestation, so it was treated and left empty for a month. Other suites were not looked at or treated.

I have had 4 treatments with one PCO. After the 3nd treatment, I had no bites for 17 days and felt positive that my nightmare would soon end, and then woke up to about 15 bites. There was usually a gap of about a month between treatments. After 3rd treatment, it was determined that unit beside me had bed bugs and that was where I was being reinfected from. So another treatment was scheduled for my place and this other suite, and after this treatment there were many more bites and are increasing. Other tenant says he has not been bitten???

My prep work from the beginning has been excellent (did everything that has been suggested here on this site) and the CPO said if others had followed my routine, most likely there would be no beg bugs left.

So another PCO was hired and was told that they would be doing some kind of heat treatment along with residual. I went away for a week and came back to find front taped shut, along with one heat detector covered and taped, somehow they missed my other heat detector. I wasn't home 20 minutes and was being bitten in a frenzy and was bitten every night since then. This same CPO is coming again Wednesday to give another treatment and I asked last week for a prep sheet to see what they would be doing and what I should be doing. Here is what it says:

"Treatment will consist of an application of RestorX 520 to the wall surfaces and baseboards and the fogging of the room to inhibit and control the bed bug infestation and prevent re-infestation of the suites.

Our treatment would consist of a foam application of RestorX 520 to wall surfaces, beds and baseboards and a complete fogging of the room under controlled heat. We would control entry into our work areas and complete on room at a time before moving to the next. Upon completion of the treatment, the room will be ready for occupancy in six (6) hours."

Does anyone know of this treatment and how effective it is. They are a new company and just getting into this business.

I have lost more than half my clothes, and half my furniture. Have spent a fortune on bags, etc., you know the routine. I have Lyme Disease and glaucoma and am really worried that my health (in more ways than one) is being affected. This past week with the heat wave in Vancouver has really made the bed bugs really active. I don't know how much I can take.

I truly appreciate all the advice from these forums and hope that someone can let me know about this kind of treatment. Thanks so much.

Hi Guys,
I've done heaps of research on bed bugs but I can't find the answers I want...
My partner and I are Australian and recently got jobs at a london pub. A week after we started my boyfriend started to get bitten by bed bugs. While I only got bitten twice, he received hundreds of bites, which he scratched, and scratched, and two months on he still has some scabs and a lot of vicous scars.
Apparently the guy in our room before us had the same problem (first bedbug problem of the house), but an exterminator was called then, and the mattress was changed, and our room was then empty for a month before we moved in.
Since our complaints, we have had the exterminator in twice, first spraying the bed and mattress and then the same plus the walls. We have had no more bites.
Although, now the girl in the next room is being severely bitten, and also the girl in the room underneath her is suffering the same.
The exterminator came to their rooms this week and sprayed just the walls, suggesting next week he will use 'smoke' in their rooms...
What is this?
Is it effective?
And should we also get our room done? Or the whole building?
I feel very itchy when I try to sleep but I think it's paranoia.
My dad is coming from Aus to stay next week, in one of the two currently infested rooms... After it has been 'smoked' though... I don't want him to get bed bugs!...
Please help................

Just wanted to drop folks a line and let you know that until Wed. of next week, I'm away from home. I'm back east visiting family, which is awesome, except that my mother is a technophobe without wifi, so I'm dependent on pirating unlocked wifi networks in the neighborhood.

So if you don't hear much from me, that's why.

And, since I've seen him around recently, I just wanted to send spideyjg a virtual high five for rolling over into the old timer category.

Is this really an expression? - yuck!

Bed bugs are tiny insects that live off the blood of human beings. Properly identified as cimex lectularius, bed bugs are wingless creatures with a body that is somewhat flat and oval in shape. Adult bed bugs are normally a reddish-brown hue and are small enough to appear to be nothing more than a blemish in the surface of the skin. While some people think that bed bugs are too small to see with the naked eye, that is not the case.

A bed bug tends to feed off the human host in the early hours just before daybreak. This is usually attributed to the fact that bed bugs do not function well in direct light. However, it is possible for the bugs to feed during the day, especially if there is no direct sunlight present.

The process used by bed bugs to feast is two-fold in nature. The bug will pierce through the top layer of skin with two hollow tubes. One of the tubes functions as the feeding tube for the bug, while the other pumps saliva into the skin of the host. The saliva contains elements to prevent clotting of the blood during the feasting time and also natural anesthetics that minimize the chances of the host noticing the presence of the bug until after the feeding has completed. For the most part, bed bugs will feed for roughly five minutes before withdrawing from the host and returning to a concealed spot on the bedding or the bed frame.

At some point after the feeding is completed, the area around the bite will begin to sting and possibly also become red and irritated. Some people may experience pain from the bed bug bites in as little as a few moments after the feasting session, while others may not begin to notice itchiness and irritation until hours later. In any case, the sensation is usually strong enough to cause discomfort for the human host.

The presence of bed bugs in the home should not be viewed as a sign the house is dirty. Unlike roaches and other infestations, bed bugs do not feed on dirt or waste; they only feed on blood. It is important to remember that the bed bugs were probably transported to the home after being encountered at some other location. Bed bugs are attracted by the warmth of the human body and the carbon dioxide present around the skin. The bugs can easily hide on clothing and later transfer themselves to the sheets where they may live for a year or more.

Ridding the home of bed bugs is somewhat similar to the process for ridding the home of lice. All bedding should be removed and washed in hot water. Vacuuming floors, carpeting, and window treatments will also help minimize the degree of infestation. The mattress, box springs and the bed frame should be sprayed with rubbing alcohol in order to kill bedbugs. Be sure to wipe down the frame using hot water followed by a dry cloth in order to prevent the rubbing alcohol from damaging the wood or metal of the bed frame.

i was very upset when i read this article, nowhere does it mention calling in a qualified pest control company. also makes it sound oh so easy to get rid of them. arrggggggg, it really pisses me off.

OK some may or may not get the cultural references but I am thinking of communication to a niche group of people who happen to travel and be more mobile than most.

The first rule of bed bug club is that you MUST talk about bed bug club.

If anyone else wants to throw the next rule in or offer some creative input into the idea of a fight club styled information site on bed bugs. It could make an amazing student project or showcase of your work or you could just post a suggestion or two below.

Its audience participation at its best and a blank canvas. I can cover hosting but would want to steer clear of google ads to keep the retro cult feel so it would not really be revenue generating just a site to help get a message out to look and avoid.

PM me if you want any suggestions and input greatly received.

I live in my apt with my 6yr old daughter- noticed bbs about 2weeks ago after returning from vacation. My daughter hasn't been back to our apt since the disccovery of what we have, as she has real sensitive skin and gotten bitten badly or reacts to the bites badly. I spray myself every morning after i shower- throw on something- run to my mom's take it off in a bag and put on my "clean clothes" that i'm keeping at her house. Anyway- I have washed most of the colthes in my room except for in my closet- I do have alot of clutter in my room but when PCO came out to treat- found bbs only UNDER my boxspring (the one place I didn't inspect and spray with the tons of 91% alcohol) I was super freaked but glads they were only in my room. After reading this website for a little while now- I'm more and more worried... My PCO didn't steam- only sprayed and I wasn't able to make it home the past 2 nights. So i know im supposed to be in my bed everynight to try and keep them only in that area-- and when i came home last night i checked under my box spring and didn't see anything - i wake up with nothing but as the day goes on- i start itching all over my arm and whelps appear. Tonight as i'm sitting here downstairs in my living room- i get another one on my stomach-- i'm a huge bug freak by the way!! So I'm worried that either 1- i've taken them to my mother's even with all these special steps i'm taking not to spread them or 2- they are all over my apt now. I usually only come home and go straight to bed because i don't want to hang out dowwnstairs and draw them down here. Before taking any clothes to my mother's i washied them all in hot water and dried them for 1-2 hrs. PCO coming back this weekend- about 10 days after 1st treatment. Someone please give me some advise- i can't sleep at night cuz i'm constantly spraying this alcohol on me and my bed for hrs.....I'm going nuts!!!!!

We've had posts on the Yahoo Group and here on great ideas for bed bug related inventions, business models, etc. I think it would be fun to re-gather all of these thoughts now that NBOM has created this FANTASTIC forum.

So- Here are some of mine-

The BB Recovery Ranch- Where one can go to sooth their skin and be in a guaranteed BB-free environment to recover ones sense of self and proportion after battling with BBs. BB sniffing dogs would regularly case all of the rooms, and all belongings brought by guests would go through Vikane or heat treatment before being brought to the rooms. Guests would immediately be welcomed to a spa environment where they can disrobe, take a great shower and soak, and then receive soothing massages and spa treatments, followed by encasement in a perfectly clean and fluffy BB-free robe.

Once properly fluffed and buffed, guests could retire to their guaranteed BB-free rooms to sleep soundly on a perfectly clean bed. Dinner is then served either in the communal dining room or on the veranda of your lovely room. BBPTSD and Group Counseling available upon request.

This spa idea is related to the BIG VIKANE VICTORY ROUNDUP, which I'll describe in another post.

Hi folks. Just a small question hoping that some one may can guide me in the right direction on where I can easily purchase something for my daughters bed.

My 4 yr old daughter has a twin size bed. (mattress, box and metal frame.) The frame of the bed has wheels on the bottom that "supposedly" lock. (uh, not!) Well when a 4 yr old hops into bed.....no such luck. The bed just rolls/slides away. I would just take off the wheels and leave it as is, but I don't want to scratch the wood floor.

I'm looking for some sort of end caps for the legs so the bed won't slide. I called Sleepy's where I bought the bed and they were of no obvious help. I don't want to get those bed risers cuz then the bed will be way to high for a child.

Does any one know where I could get these "leg end post things?" I don't even know what the real name for this type of part so my googling isn't doing much good. I know it's seems like a minor question, but some help/guidance would be great. I'm tierd of re-positioning the bed ever day. And poor kid, it's not like she's jumping on the bed or anything, she's just being a kid and getting into bed the way a kid does. :-) Thanks for any input....

Last night I was laying in bed having trouble falling asleep, just tossing and turning. I felt a little itchy on my thigh and realized I had a little bug bite or something. Figured it was old. But then I kept feeling itchy and tossing and turning so I got up and noticed I has several little pink welts on the backs and inside of my thighs. I freaked out and started doing bed bug research on the internet and haven't slept all night. This morning I'm ripping my bed apart searching for the "signs."

The bites or w/e decreased in size several hours later, but it looks like now I have new ones, even though I haven't been in bed. They start off about half the size of a penny, flat but slightly raised (no real bump of dot in the middle) and pinkish. Then later they shrink to half the size of a pea and look a little redder, but don't itch anymore.

I couldn't find any fecal stains on my sheets or mattress, but I'm still looking... found little black specks mixed in with dirt and sand from my feet, but they didn't smear or melt in water.

I thought once before I had bed bugs like five months ago, but then I had fewer bumps, and I did internet research but didn't chalk it up to bed bugs.

Am I being paranoid? am I not being conscientious enough? Could this be some other bug or dermatological thing? Do bed bugs keep biting if you're awake and tossing and turning and itching your skin while new bumps are appearing? I thought they would scurry away. ugh...

sorry if this turns out to be unrelated and I am just wasting space in your forum. Thanks for any help or advise you can provide!!

I think I am on my own on this one. I just wonder why it is that the government is not doing much about this problem. They have so much to gain from a bedbug epidemic actually. But that depends on how much you believe the New World Order is out to get us.

Conspiracy theory aside, I have to ask, just how much worse is our society going to get before something turns around.. or is it really not going to. People who are younger don't have the benefit of experience of having vivid recollection and experience of what it was like living in North America in the 80's, 70's, 60's... and while society had already entered a state of decay by that time, it was not nearly as severe, nor close to as fast as what's going on today.

Bedbugs are just a sympton of the bigger problem. However, they are on par with Hurricane Katrina in my book. People are losing all their possessions (generally people who are poor to begin with), and are suffering extreme physical and psychological reactions. I know my life has changed.

There have been some positive changes from my encounter with bed bugs. I think my saying so is proof of just what an enlightened and positive person I am.. that I have more than once looked adversity in the face and welcomed the life lessons it has brought despite the horrors. My perspective on life is just that much sharper, and I believe I have become a better person.

At the same time though, I am becoming increasingly fed up with this world.. with the corruption, our fake political system, the politicians.. and even worse, the complacent citizens who care more about sports and have no idea what civic duty and really getting involved in the world means because they don't want to miss "American Idol". Because we have allowed ourselves to become ignorant: I think the IQ of the average American has dropped in the last decade, and that this has all been orchestrated by TPTB through everything from prescription drugs to subliminal conditioning in media. And now we are paying the price.
Just LOOK at these pictures as merely exhibit A in what could be a chamber full, of just how far America has fallen from earlier times which were not perfect but had certain things inexorabley lost today. http://www.growingchicago.com/other/mypicsVI/ The following link takes you to Gary, Indiana, in living color. This is not normal. Apparently, the ENTIRE downtown core of this minor American city has been completely abandoned. Detroit is not far behind, nor are several Ohio cities, with similar degeneration all across the country.

Yes I am on a soapbox here, but can you blame me? It's one thing to be all up in arms about bedbugs, but when we take a step back and look at the bigger picture and see what has been happening, and that the resurgence of bedbugs is but a glimpse of where we are headed, this is what is even more frightening. Granted, bedbugs are hard to combat right now, but what's worse is to feel like no one cares.. like you have no support, as the common citizen has little of in this day and age.. diminishing rights, elimination of constitutional guarantees and little power (nor the knowledge of how to wield it). What's worse than being overrun by bedbugs in some dumpy flat in Queens, or a newer house in the suburbs, is knowing it could be raining bedbugs, and no one who could really do something for you gives a damn.

I have read that they feed around 4 to 5 in the morning but many people post that an hour after going to bed they can find bed bugs in their bed. I am confused about this. I search all hours of the night but it is true that I don't use a flashlight.

I have found fecal traces but nothing else. However, it seems most people find the bug in their beds hiding or on them after (or before) three months. So, does that mean I am BB free and the black spots on my sheets and clothes are not from BB's but something else? My white sheets are beginning to be covered in spots.

How long before you are so over ran by BBs that you find an actually bug?

I haven't been sleeping well for over a month. I have thought I have seen things but accidently swept them up before I realized or they were too small.

If you have BBs you know it...Right? Because you find them running in your bed?

I am desperate to find one or know for sure I don't have them. The mother in me can't sleep because I can not stand the thought of something on my three sleeping children.

I am so tired. Tired to the bone.
I really really want to believe we don't have BBs but each time I start to do just that there is something there that taunts me. Those black spots are evil. I wish they would stop showing up.

I had my first treatment May 14th- today I've seen one live adult bug in the fireplace tile and have discovered a harborage in the sun room (where my dad is now sleeping). I sprayed the nest with alcohol. I also found a big one on the highest ceiling in our house (our house is pretty open with a loft). I went upstairs and sprayed it with 91percent alcohol.. It is directly above the couch where I have been sleeping for the past two weeks (I have to sleep in here in order to take care of my dad who cannot climb stairs right now).

I am waiting for it to shrivel up and fall and hopefully die. I've layed white garbage bags on the table and couch. I might be going crazy. I'm thinking about wearing a bowl filled with alcohol attached to my head during the day to catch any stragglers that try to fall on me (not really).

Is "it" just going to stay up there, or eventually fall. :/ Ahhh!!

I laugh at myself A LOT. This has helped me cope with a lot of situations in my life that have been beyond my control. After I calm down, cry my eyes out, feel sorry for myself and get angry, I always end up laughing. Why? Because I cannot control what is happening to me, but I CAN control how I deal with it.

This experience (which is ongoing) has taught me a lot to appreciate everything and everyone in my life. As I mentioned in my earlier posts, I suffer from depression. I think this bed bug nightmare has actually helped cure my depression. It really puts your life in perspective. I think back to the last two years and how much I complained about stuff that did not matter. How much I cried and felt sorry for myself for things that I COULD CHANGE but was too lazy, too depressed, too broken down to deal with. I now realize that those setbacks were nothing compared to what is happening now.

With time, this bud beg infestation will pass. My parents will have their house back and life will go on. They are getting older and need my help- and that is what I have to do right now. I am getting stronger every day and I know that I can deal with problems now with a little more grace and a tougher skin.

Why do I laugh at myself? Oh, because I've done some pretty dumb stuff since the whole bb nightmare began. Here are just a few:

1. I was plugging in my laptop behind the couch and my ENTIRE arm (up to the shoulder blade got stuck between the couch and the wall. I was stuck for 10 minutes. Every time I tried to wiggle my arm out it kept getting sucked in further! When I finally got it out, I had bruises all over my arm. My dad sat helpless in the next room because he couldn't walk (this happened the day after his fall). I'm just glad that I got it out and we didn't have to call for outside help!

2. Day 3 after infestation discovery I pooped in my pants. I have never done that before. First time for everything, I guess. I had the runs for a week (sorry, I know it's gross).

3. Day 2 after the infestation discovery/ dad's fall- I had to go back to the doctor's to get my dad a foot splint (apparently the doc gave us the wrong one). I had not slept in 36 hours. The ride should have only taken 15 minutes, but because I was sleep deprived, panicky and anxious it ended up taking 2 hours to get there. I stopped for directions 3x and still couldn't find it. I cried a lot during that ride. It was cathartic. By the time I got back to my dad at home, I was calm and collected:)

4. My dad used to have a routine before he fell (he fell the night before the first treatment while helping me get the mattress downstairs)! He is stubborn and I've had to educate him A LOT about the bed bug problem. I feel bad that he is under house arrest, but I can't risk him falling and breaking something (like his hip). His road to recovery is already long enough as it is... Anyway, he is finally walking around a little with the help of crutches. Yesterday he snuck into the garage where I have kept all the garbage bags filled with things to throw away. He really wanted to salvage a $50 modem and decided to open all of the garbage bags. He probably tracked some bugs/eggs back in the house. I did not laugh, but went for a ride to calm myself down. I can laugh about it now, but only because without a sense of humor I probably would have burned the house down by now.

The list continues...

Thanks for reading!

You're going to be hearing reports that there was a pretty substantial moderate earthquake that just hit southern California (8:39 pm PDT on Sunday 17 May).

Just wanted to check in and let people know that I'm fine. My cat is freaked out, but I am fine. It wasn't big enough that you should worry about Spideyjg since it was right about a 5.0 in initial reports, but given where it was, it's definitely the biggest and closest I've been through since I moved here, so I wanted to post lest people hear the news and freak out.

Good evening good folks,

long miserable story, short version.

Bedbugs spring 08.. terrible allergic reaction.. doctor. she doesn't think it is bedbugs but won't touch me. (terrible feeling) expensive treatment.. loss of sleep... awful life changing anxiety... personal property.. follow up treatment in 3 weeks..
i follow protocol and live out of plastic bags for months.. feel crazy.

Start to relax in Oct 08. ONE week before i am to go visit my sweetie..bug bites again.. NO evidence anywhere... pay for dog to come... twice.. no hits.. have my prev. PCO come and says he sees no evidence. He treats and takes my double zip lock bag of suspects away with him.. i destroy and throw away Christmas stuff.. old pictures, shoes, records, purses.. my past. anything.. i throw them away, double plastic bag in the trash... life gets emptier. PCO sez none of the bugs are bbs.. i am astonished.. the bites.. the double entry of the bites.. the miserable itching.. the swelling.... my skin looks like i have been burned by hot water thrown on me..

Time passes... i had notified the bldg owner (moral obligation) & to to my understanding they treated all the apts around me..below and adoining... they paid for my 2nd treatment.

May 08...Honestly i am trying to make this short..the same apt bldg is going to be renovated... residents have migrated (me included) to alternate units until renov. completed.. i have been here two months next friday..

got bit last night...in bed.. big angry welts.. three of them on my neck... no evidence visible.. i have some new stuff in bedroom, but most of the items have been treated 4 times since last spring....

does anyone have any idea if this is 'typical"bb behavior..?

Dear folks,pls help me.

Just wanted to share some thoughts on things that I am grateful for when it comes to bed bugs.

First and foremost..I'm grateful the bugs are gone! ;)
I am grateful I have an extremely supportive family that loves me
I am grateful for the abundance of continuing information and support on this site.
I am grateful that though bed bugs are spreading, more and more PCO companies are getting on board with this pest and getting their act together.
I am grateful for government levels starting to open their eyes on bed bugs
I am grateful for the many new and better ways irradiate bed bugs. (more IPM, thermal, vikane etc..) all this was a pipe dream just two years ago.
I am grateful for all the new and upcoming tools to assist in the fight and prevent of bed bugs that was non existent two years ago.(types of monitor devices, detection tools, k9's, and the Packtite!) I remember all too well hearing nightmare stories of people baking nearly anything they could in their oven, soaking their clothes in Kleenfree before leaving the house, people tossing memorabilia, renting PODS, buying deep freezers to store luggage after a trip! To all you true entrepreneurs out there I say good work and keep it up!

Well, these are just a few things that come to mind right now. I have more...and hope those who have gone through bed bugs or are going through an infestation can find things to be grateful for to add to this list.

OK so I could not sleep this morning and have been up since 5am UK time (got to get that out of the way from the start as it explains the rest).

Reviewing things and searching for things I realised that I did not know what the patron saint of bed bugs was, after several coffees in an attempt to console myself from a remissive hole in my bed bug knowledge I went out on a google search.

It turns out there is no patron saint for bed bugs but there is a patron saint for insect bites:

Saint Narcissus

Memorial 29 October

Profile

2nd-3rd century bishop of Jerusalem. Late in life, he was accused of a crime. None of the Christians in his diocese believed it, but Narcissus did not believe he should serve after being under such a cloud, and he became a desert hermit. After a complete acquittal, Narcissus returned to his see, older, weathered, but stronger and more zealous than ever, and served several more years. When his age began to wear on him, he begged God to send a bishop to help him. Saint Alexander of Cappadocia responded, and the two ruled the diocese together, Narcissus living to age 116.

Born 99

Died 215 of natural causes

Canonized Pre-Congregation

Patronage insect bites

Source: http://saints.sqpn.com

As there was a gap in the market I thought we should write to the pontiff for some direction. Now here is the fun part who do we put forward?

Post your suggestions below.

The other day I went to a restaurant in London called Dans le Noir which is quite literally eating a meal in pitch blackness.

You dine in a room with no light or source of illumination and can literally not see your finger an inch away from your face.

The gastronomic delight is only made possible by the waiters and guide who all happen to be blind. Your food simply arrives in front of you and you have to find it to eat. The concept is that loss of sight will heighten the sense of taste.

So my question to everyone is would you dine in the pitch black unable to see your food let alone any of your surroundings?

Was it a calculated risk that small restaurant is not likely to have a high risk, or that a place where people eat in the dark would need to be cleaned well by someone other than a waiter.

or am I just living life on the edge?

I actually found the experience very liberating being able to enjoy time with a good friend in the dark in public without anyone having a clue who we were or what we looked like.

Hi Bedbuggers,
I know its been a while since I've been on/posted but I wanted to check in with everyone and say hi. My website has been down so I haven't been able to update it. I just wanted to thank the Bedbugger community, the bloggers, and the great reviews you have given both me and Tre.

I did want to put the word out that you make sure to ask the right questions to any PCO you might be looking into. This is key, and I'm sure all of you bedbuggers out there are educated to know which questions are the right ones.

Due to the recession, I know times are rough, so I want to extend an offer. The next few clients will receive a set of four interceptors and one bed beg certified mattress encasement. And I've heard many stories on here and elsewhere about those who have bed bugs and may not be able to afford the proper pest control. I want to hear from people who are REALLY financially challenged and cannot afford treatment--I want to hear your stories. Over the next two weeks, I'll pick ONE person and do their treatment for free. Don't thank me, thank Bedbugger, because without this forum, I wouldn't have the opportunity to give back to the people who have always helped me.

Hang in there,
Cesar

Hi Everybody,

After suffering through the misinformation, fear and stigma of a bedbug attack, I am writing an article about bedbugs for the L Magazine here in New York. My article will be three fold-- myths & realities of how to prevent and treat, and a few stories of personal experiences that illustrate the fear, secrecy and paranoia that seems to come along with the vile creatures!

I would LOVE it if you could contact me if you have a story. I will not use your full name, only your first name, since it is a sensitive issue.

I'm hoping that through open, honest discussion of the topic we can lead to a public better equipped to protect themselves.

please email me at emily.brooklynradio@gmail.com if you are willing to share your story.

I had just noticed that radio anchor George Weber had blogged on his personal website on Friday about the Bed Bug Advisory Board bill. He had himself had bed bugs twice in his Brooklyn apartment.

ABC reports that Weber was found dead today, victim of an apparent homicide.

This is a sad story. My condolances go out to his family and friends.

Hi Everyone... My boyfriend just came home from traveling, and thought he came in contact with bed bugs. All of his luggage is outside and bagged, he even put the clothes he wore home outside in a bag too. What I want to know is, how concerned do I need to be about these little bugs getting inside. He says he thinks he knows where the bed bugs were, an once he bagged that particular item, he didn't get any more bites. (He traveled to another location before coming home.) We are planning to wash everything in extra hot water tomorrow. And dry it for hours, etc.

Should I call pest control just to be sure? Will they be able to tell even if there isnt' a clear infestation? I mean, are there eggs on his ipod? Are the bugs likely to try to come inside from being outside? I can't be too careful.

Thanks!

Okay, so today was a big milestone for me. I unpacked all of my belongings out of plastic bags. I have faith that they are now gone or on the way out (as the dust takes a couple of days to kill them) and I will be able to resume a normal life. All of our beds are isolated and I made sure that they will have to cross pesticides before they reach us and realize they cannot get to us.

I prayed in all the corners of my upper levels. It really helped to calm my nerves. Last night I thought I seen a bump on the back of my six months old's neck. I was wrong. My mind playing tricks on me I guess. Today, I thought I saw a blood spot but realized it was not. LOL! It was take some time before I can live life without being so hyper vigilant but at least all of my belongings are as they should be and I am not being ruled by those pests anymore.

Its funny, they are so good at hiding that you sometimes feel that you are fighting an invisible enemy that out smarts you at every turn.

I have learned that that is a false reality. In reality, they are just bugs. Even the smallest ones are visible to the naked eye. They have been eradicated from hundreds of homes and have been eradicated from mine.

God Bless

Tonight, while doing a scan of my room for bed bugs, I came across a large (dime sized, I'd say) spider. I tried to take a picture, but it was too blurry and THEN it started to move, so I sprayed it with Steri-Fab (stupid spider, making me use my Steri-Fab on you!) to kill it. And then I bagged it. And now I'm trying to see if I can get it IDed to see if maybe, it too, is biting me (or at least irritating me. In more ways than one).

This, along with finding a baby cockroach running across my floor the other afternoon (I bagged that, too), spider beetle carcasses abound (I stick everything with tape now), and mouse droppings appearing out of nowhere (setting up a trap tonight). What DOESN'T my apartment have?
