Another normal Saturday morning, woken up by a radio researcher asking to have a chat about bed bugs on air and hour or so later.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00541w6/Vanessa_Feltz_21_11_2009/

2:36:16 in

Nothing earth shattering about the information for seasoned bed buggers but its all about getting the message out there.

Look and avoid is much better than suffering.

I will be doing another podcast session later int he day and will post the link when its online.

I was hoping to get new and additional information from the experts who attended Pestworld Vegas (2009). All I've found so far was chit chat about hotel rooms.

Does anyone have anything to report?

The recent NYC seminar with Drs. Potter and Miller was pretty well covered, and I appreciate that, Nobugs.

Hi Everyone,

I am pleased to announce a new project that I am working on called:

Bed Bug Aware

This will be the second literary installment in the clear and commonsense bed bug series I have been working on and should be available at the start of 2010.

The new book will focus on the hospitality industry and what steps they can take to tackle the issue of bed bugs. Although not strictly relevant to this audience there is some overlap and advanced bedbugger have a lot of insight to share.

If there is anyone with a product that you think should be included in the reviews let me know, I am writing to all the suppliers in the next few days.

The associated website www.BedBugAware.com is being worked on in tandem and just like BedBugBeware.com will be used to post some of the latest information as and when it is available between versions of the book.

Please let me know if you have specific issues that you would like to see addressed in the book.

Regards,

Bedbugs Seen: my local laundromats. Several times. Response by laundromat? Wipe machine. Response by Health Authorities? Unfortunately, is impossible to monitor. The dryer will kill them.

Your number one protection against bedbugs? Your own washer/dryer.

The problem I've seen is the homeless in my laundromat, using the various facilities and not having anything "cleaned" afterward. These poor people sleep on the street, and I have seen more times than I can count them coming in to use the dryers for their wet bedding, while they also put possessions from their shopping carts into the laundromat wheely carts that are used for clean laundry, carts that are NOT cleaned after they do so. I have never seen the laundromat wipe out a dryer or clean a cart after a homeless person has used it. And right afterward, I have witnessed people putting their clean laundry into these same carts, including the laundromat itself, for its drop-off service. (The laundromat also sorts any dirty laundry they receive in these carts).

This laundromat accepts drop-off service for multi-millionaires. This is a laundromat where houses sell for between 1 million and 13 million. There is no better one. I've looked, and there are bedbugs in other ones, too (I saw 5 machines at one laundromat with the bugs on top). I've used this laundromat for 15 years and this only started in the last few years - with the homelessness.

When I first moved to this neighborhood, there were NO homeless. Unfortunately, the rising cost of housing, as well as the closing of Mental Health institutions has meant many living on the streets. Then, the city enacted some bylaws that meant that these homeless people got ticketed for begging. Once they got several tickets, they were no longer allowed to be in the downtown core, or use the shelters there. This meant they moved into the suburbs where they currently sleep in doorways - and also, at the local youth hostels. (Note: be concerned about staying in a hostel for this reason).

This is what people should be worried about when doing laundry at a laundromat. With what I have witnessed I would ABSOLUTELY recommend NEVER dropping your laundry off!! IF you want to lessen your chance of bugs: DO NOT PUT YOUR CLEAN LAUNDRY INTO THE WHEELY BASKETS. DO NOT FOLD YOUR LAUNDRY ON TOP OF WASHERS (that's where I've seen bugs). DO NOT FOLD ON THE COMMON AREAS, where people store their dirty bags. Don't let people sort their dirty laundry on top of the washing machines you have your clean clothes in. (Tell them you have bugs - it's the ONLY way to stop people from doing this. Unfortunately, people get very offended when you ask - but you have to protect yourself.).

I've developed a good method of doing laundry to not bring bugs home:

You need: several rubbermaid containers & pillow cases. What you want to do is pre-sort your laundry before you get there, into the pillowcases. Put the laundry in the pillowcase directly into the washers, including the pillowcases. Don't sort there. Make sure you wipe down the containers as well as your washing machines, as the bugs hide at the top. When the washer is done, put wet clothing DIRECTLY into the container to take to the dryer. DO NOT USE THE BASKETS!!! Then, fold directly from the dryer into a pillowcase inside your container. Once you arrive home, leave the containers in the hall, pull out the pillowcases. Remove your outdoor pants and shirts before taking the clothing into your bedroom, put these in a plastic bag. Once you have put away the laundry, either vacuum the containers or put them in your shower and hose down. Vaccuum your front entrance way. Shower. Vacuum your car regularly, shake off your coat/shoes after driving your car, leave them at your entrance, do not put them in your bedroom.

This may seem a tad obsessive. But historically, people have been battling the bedbug for centuries, with or without pest control. In Victorian times, households would not allow their live-in staff to come into the house with any of their own bedding or clothing, as they knew it would infest the entire house. Likewise, sailing ships would not allow sailors to bring bedding and used hammocks as an alternative to dissuade bugs.

I've been looking for a new apartment, and I've noticed that the only buildings that don't have bedbugs are the ones that have insuite laundry. Even if the building is next to a building on the Bedbug Registry, the building has insuite laundry - and doesn't have them. I truly believe this is the number one way to not get bugs, other than using the method I've described above.

Note: you could also be risking your clothing if you are dropping off drycleaning at a laundromat. The same people handling the laundry also handle your drycleaning. I think it's important to look at the living conditions of the people doing so, and you will know if there is any risk....

Interesting on the progress with bed bugs with in the last 2yrs. Good that steps are finally being addressed, but I feel as in the clip with Cooper...should be taken on a National Level. (long ago for that matter)

Hello NJ, where are you?!?!?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZSHUBG47ks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_an87F8laDE
We need to get the bed bug awareness on a National Level NOW don't ya think?

As a parent, I fear everyday when my child comes off the school bus as to if I should "take precautions" when she comes home from school. It's a huge mental battle for me on what is "normal" and "not." In many ways it seems like we are all sitting ducks in await of another infestation as so my children can still lead a normal and happy life. From what I gather, we must go on "normally" as before we had bed bugs, even if we do get them again.....for there is no way to avoid running into bed bugs without putting yourself in a bubble. For me, single family home, many small kids...I have no landlord, no govt assistance. I know with all the activity in the home the only way out of another infestation w/o losing everything again is going to cost me $8k+ which I don't have. The final results of our last infestation was Chapt 13. But still I chose (with much fear) to live as normally as we can for the health and happiness of the family.

We rid our infestation 2 yrs ago. What fears me most is we were least likely to get bed bugs according to what I've read. We have not traveled in over 6 yrs. We live in a single family detached house hours from the city. Our children were babies and not in school at the time. And this was 2 yrs ago.

We got the infestation from having a close family member sit on our couch and/or stay the night. That family member hasn't traveled in over 15 yrs and barely has a social life.

If this happened to us 2 yrs ago, how bad is the spread of bed bugs now?

I say it's long over due time for the government to stand up on this no?

Ok, enough of my rant..Felt good to get it out though. Thanks seeing through my eyes a bit. If God lead ya to it, he'll also get ya through it. I've been told! And it's true.

But Please, no matter what state you live, write your local and state government, health depts, to push them to take some action. It's slow moving but as we see, it helps. It's for our children.

Hi Everyone,

The section is 1:35:50 til 1:42:07

Good clear messages and it appears to have stimulated more interest in people being proactive enough to check for bed bugs and a few firther steps to ensure that people know it has nothing to do with you living conditions.

Finally, the Bed Bug Advisory Board has been fully staffed with appointees and they're ready to meet this week.

One of the five appointees is Renee Corea of New York vs. Bed Bugs, which campaigned for the BABB to be created in the first place!

Others include Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann of the NYSIPM Program (and who has been quite helpful to Bedbugger listserv readers), Richard Cooper of Cooper Pest, Gil Bloom of Standard Pest, and Ray Lopez who (using IPM, encasements, dusts) helps people in East Harlem fight bed bugs, in their homes.

So, there's an article over at MSNBC today about the eight bugs with the highest ew, ick! factor.

Unsurprisingly, bed bugs make the list.

Although, I have to say, I wasn't thrilled with the info in the sidebar, it also didn't completely suck.

I would also like to point out that, generally speaking, I've seen photos here as good or better than the one they used.

On these threads I have noted that we need to get the bb story out among politically progressive people, because it is an issue that is being ignored on many levels by the powers that be. " Smirking Chimp" is a very interesting web site that I joined recently. If you have strong ideas on current events, you will enjoy reading the stories and blogs, and if you are a member you will enjoy the lively discussions that you can be part of. I am putting pieces about bbs on a more informal part of the site called "Chimpster Nation." I am hoping people there will share their bb concerns and experiences. Statistically, I can't imagine that people who are on the "Smirking Chimp" site haven't been touched by bbs since all populations have seen a tremendous increase in bb activity. I have referred the readers there to bedbugger.com. I hope you look up my thread in the "Chimpster Nation" section. Some of you may already subscribe to "Smirking Chimp." If you do, you can make comments on the thread and help get a discussion going. If you don't subscribe, this might be a time to join. There are currently great blogs on the healthcare issue which I know is extremely important to most of us. The address is :
www.smirkingchimp.com

I would also like to note that I am sure there are members on this site who would not consider themselves to be politically liberal. Bbs do not know politics. If Smirking Chimp does not appeal to you, I am sure there are blogs that you like and you can start similar imformative discussions on blogs that you prefer.

Did anyone notice this - it's an article about a blossoming music/jazz community in two buildings on Ocean Ave in Brooklyn.

The article totally makes light of the building's bedbug problem and instead focuses on how wonderful the building is because of the music connections:

"And the odd bedbug invasion aside, consider the alternatives, say the French couple Willemine Dassonville, 28, and Julien Augier, 33. She’s a ceramist, he plays drums, and they fled a house-sitting gig in Greenwich, Conn., where, Ms. Dassonville suggested, they were dying of ennui. "

The Bedbug Registry has this building listed and the comment from Feb 2009 says:
"there have been several apts in this building with bed bugs, they seem to be moving from apt to apt. so far i've heard of atleast 5 apts with bed bugs, on the 2nd floor,6th floor, and 5th floor. "

The article is called "Musicians Preferred; Loud Music OK" and is part of "Habitats - Prospect Lefferts Gardens" in the NY Times on Sunday, May 3, 2009.

The bedbug registry report can be found by googling 99 Ocean Ave Brooklyn

hi, I am an oldtimer except I haven't logged on in a million years because I've been lucky enough to be bed bug free for a while. So hello newbites and oldtimers and everyone in between.

I'm logging on today because I haven't been keeping up on bed bug news and I happened to see this thing on AOL about household health hazards. i think this is a fluff article with some bad info in it, but since I haven't been keeping up, I can't be sure. Is there new evidence in the past year since I've logged on finding that bed bugs spread disease? Yes i did look at the FAQs before coming here and didn't see anything

One to share with you, I have been on the radio again today. They gave me a chance to really chat about the subject and bust a lot of the myths.

The footage is 01:42:35 into the show.

The link is:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p003z87v/Aleena_Naylors_Morning_Show_12_08_2009/

I have promised to drop in with some samples next time I am passing.

The rather amusing one I have just noticed is that the presenter was Aleena Naylor which might remind some of the longer term bedbuggers that our top friendly entomologist in the UK is Richard Naylor, I will ask him tomorrow if they are related.

The Hillrise Apartments for seniors in College Hill (Cincinnati) have had bed bugs for a long time. I did a blog post about tenants' claims their whole building was infested way back in October 2007.

There's a new story today in the press on how tenants -- nineteen months later -- are currently trying to fight them with rubbing alcohol and towels under the door.

Hi,

Regulars to the forum may recall ther London bed bug survey that we conducted last year, well that was in fact just the start of it and we have been busy collecting all the data for the whole UK.

We recently had a media request to focus on Cambridge which resulted in the article below:

http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/cn_news_cambridge/displayarticle.asp?id=432499

We are learning a lot about the spread by conducting these studies but it does take a lot of time and resources to collect, collate and analyse the data. Thankfully we have a small team focused on it so the patterns are starting to rise to the surface.

We've often heard from people in Seattle that there is not much available to you in terms of bed bug resources and information. Hopefully, this is changing, since NPMA is hosting a bed bug summit there.

I am quoting in full here, because this seems to be a press release:

June 12, 2009 Olympia, WA – Eden is excited to announce that the National Pest Management Association will be hosting a Bed Bug Summit for the Northwest at the Westin Seattle on August 27th. The EPA’s Bed Bug Summit in Washington D.C. last April sparked a demand for similar conferences to be held in multiple cities throughout the country, Seattle being one of them.

Bed bugs are back in high numbers and causing major issues for the hospitality industry. The goal behind the symposium is to train, educate and initiate a response plan for bedbug prone facilities so that the Northwest is prepared for the resurgence of Bed bugs. Bed bugs are one of the most challenging pests to control; therefore education and collaboration is the most effective way to combat the rising number of cases.

Representatives from hotels, hospitals, pest control companies and the like are highly encouraged to attend. The symposium is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. and to conclude no later than 4:00 p.m. The day’s itinerary will consist of hands-on exhibits, speakers from the Department of Health, National Pest Management Association and discussions with experts from several industry sectors.

To make hotel reservations at the Westin Seattle, call 206-728-1000 by August 3, 2009 to receive the group rate of $159 per night.

More details will become available as the date of the event approaches.

Found here.

Hi everyone,

On a happy note we modelled what we expect to see as a result of the 2012 Olympics in London the other week and one of the newspapers interviewed me about it.

The article is here, hopefully they will heed the warning and get proactive about the issue.

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/posts/view/83809/2012-Games-face-bed-bugs-plague/

However I fear that is too much to hope for.

Bed Bug Book.

Published in the UK ISBN 978-0-9562617-0-0 Bed Bug Beware - An easy to understand guide to bed bugs, their prevention and control is a 34 page full colour guide to inspecting for bed bugs while traveling, inspecting your home and how you can safely attempt to clear a light infestation if detected early.

The authors are David Cain and Richard Strand who have been working on this collaboration since the start of the year. It is designed to take the work of bedbugbeware.com out of cyberspace and into your hands.

I know I am little biased on this one but the first time I picked up a bound copy (yesterday) I was amazed and the look and feel of it. I don't have children but I imagine its a similar feeling although more likely to give you a paper cut.

Copies will be on sale via numerous online sites in the next few days and we hope they will be accessible via public libraries as well.

I have already started work on the next guide which we will announce as soon as it is finished and then I will turn my efforts towards a technical guide on how pest controllers can develop their bed bug skills.

If you want a signed copy please contact my office indicating what comments you would prefer (LOL only joking).

ource: USA Today
WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal government is waking up to what has become a growing nightmare in many parts of the country — a bed bug outbreak.

The tiny reddish-brown insects, last seen in great numbers prior to World War II, are on the rebound. They have infested college dormitories, hospital wings, homeless shelters and swanky hotels from New York City to Chicago to Washington.

They live in the crevices and folds of mattresses, sofas and sheets. Then, most often before dawn, they emerge to feed on human blood.

Faced with rising numbers of complaints to city information lines and increasingly frustrated landlords, hotel chains and housing authorities, the Environmental Protection Agency is hosting its first-ever bed bug summit on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The venue — the Sheraton Crystal City Hotel in Arlington — has had no reported bed bug problems, according to a popular online registry, so at least conference participants will be sleeping tight.

“The problem seems to be increasing and it could definitely be worse in densely populated areas like cities, although it can be a problem for anyone,” said Lois Rossi, director of the registration division in the EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs.

One of the problems, according to researchers and the pesticide industry, is that there are few chemicals on the market approved for use on mattresses that are effective at reducing bed bugs.

The EPA, out of concern for the environment and the effects on public health, has pulled off of shelves many of the chemicals that were most effective in eradicating the bugs from the U.S. over the last 50 years, such as DDT.

Increasing international travel has also increased the chances for the bugs to hitchhike from developing countries which never eradicated them completely.

“This is a worldwide resurgence,” said Dini Miller, an entomologist and bed bug expert at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, who until 2001 only saw bed bugs on microscope slides dating from the 1950s. Now she gets calls several times a day from people who are often at their wits end dealing with the problem.

“I can’t tell you how many people have spent the night in their bath tubs because they are so freaked out by bed bugs,” Miller said. “I get these people over the phone that have lost their marbles.”

Bed bugs are not known to transmit any diseases. But people have had an allergic reaction to their bites. The insects release an anticoagulant to get blood flowing, and they also excrete a numbing agent so their bites don’t often stir a victim’s slumber.

Those often hardest hit are the urban poor, Miller said, who cannot afford to throw out all their belongings or take the sanitation measures necessary to rid them of the problem.

Because the registration of new pesticides takes so long, one thing the EPA could do is approve some pesticides for emergency use, Miller said.

The pesticide industry will be pushing for federal funding for research into alternative solutions, such as heating, freezing or steaming the bugs out of bedrooms.

“We need to have better tools,” said Greg Baumann, a senior scientist at the National Pest Management Association. “We need EPA to consider all the options for us.”
