I was actually late for work because I had to catch the "Around Town" segment on the local news this morning as they were "around town" with Affordable Canine Solutions and on the hunt for bed bugs! Video of part of the segment can be found here:

http://www.wgntv.com/news/morningnews/aroundtown/

There was a third segment where they went more in depth with info and took the dog into the bedroom that hasn't made it into the online video for some reason. But with the lack of reports in the local media, I'm just glad they used their segment normally slated for arts & entertainment around the city to focus on these critters. And I'm even more elated that they used and interviewed reputable local professionals to relate the information. Plus who can resist watching such an adorable and cuddly bed bug hunter in the morning?

This is the popular seminar given by Jonathan Boyar, A.C.E. of Ecologic Entomology. Representatives from Boston Inspectional Services will appear with citywide update.

IF YOU OWN BUILDINGS WITH BED BUG INFESTATIONS, OR LIVE IN BUILDINGS WITH BED BUGS, DON'T MISS THIS FREE PUBLIC INFORMATION SEMINAR. SPACE IS LIMITED.

When: Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 7:00 pm
Where: Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston Street, Boston, MA
Cost: FREE - No solicitations of any products or services permitted.

Many entomologists believe the resurgence of the bed bug (Cimex lectularius) presents the most serious pest management challenge in decades. Apartment buildings, dormitories, hotels, hospitals, residences, offices, and shelters have all seen a dramatic rise in bed bug infestations. Armed with limited resources, pest management companies have their hands full, with some companies reporting bed bug treatments occupying the largest segment of their business.

This seminar tells the story of where these parasites came from, why they disappeared for so long, and where things are headed.

Topics covered:
•	The origin of bed bugs
•	History of bed bugs & pesticides
•	Anatomy of the bed bug
•	Biology & Ecology of bed bugs
•	Injury & Damage caused by bed bugs
•	Symptoms of bed bugs
•	How to identify & inspect for bed bugs
•	Treatment for bed bugs
•	Do I have to throw my furniture away?
•	Documentation
•	Pesticides available to battle bed bugs
•	Why treatments fail
•	Common issues/problems that thwart control
•	Owners responsibility vs. tenants responsibility
•	Chemical resistance
•	Fraudulent products, services, and claims
•	Canine Scent Detection
•	New technologies
•	How to protect yourself from bringing them home
•	More

The program is given by Jonathan Boyar, A.C.E. who is a certified entomologist and certified PCO for more than 28 years. He has trained hundreds of Property Managers, Health officials, and medical professionals in the New England area about the bed bug epidemic. NO solicitations for any products or services is allowed.

After reading Emmm's previous post about seeing a bed bug on public transit, I decided to look up bed bugs and the CTA for those in Chicago. If you are like me, you rely on public transit daily. Found one article from the Redeye about the measures the CTA takes regarding the cleaning of public transport. Article is from May 2009 and addresses the Red Line (the most heavily populated train line) and touches upon the rise of infestations on the North Side:

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/redeye/2009/05/cta-no-bed-bugs-on-the-red-line.html

Now, while I want to believe the CTA about not seeing a bed bug on the trains, I don't quite believe them. They behave like politicians and hate admitting to bad things. However, it does make me feel better to know that they do appear to have some protocols in place for deep cleaning and extermination inspections. Let's hope these didn't get tossed out with the doomsday budget cuts recently...

On a sidenote, even though the date had passed (it was January 21st), I discovered that Clark & Devon Hardware in Edgewater held a bb class/seminar led by a BB PCO for what appears to be property owners and PCO's to discuss bb elimination strategies in buildings. I will be moving back to this neighborhood in a few months and am glad to see that someone in that area is being proactive in community education about them! YAY! I have heard diddly squat from the community businesses or administration in Lakeview about them and it's a rising problem here and quite scary considering the amount of large high rises in the neighborhood.

I'm a masters of journalism student at Ryerson University in Toronto. I'm the head of a team doing an investigative documentary on the bed bug invasion in Toronto. The reason I'm so passionate about this story is because I've personally lived in student residences and apartments with a serious infestation problems. This problem has gotten WAY out of hand. Send a message - get things changed! If you've been tormented by bed bugs in this city I'd love to hear your story.

Lou Sorkin has invited us all to the upcoming NYENTSOC meeting on bed bugs, where Lou and others will be speaking on 1/20 Weds. More details here.

To give a bit of background -- Lou has organized these meetings in the past. I believe there were three on bed bugs back in 2006. That was at a time when there really weren't any educational seminars in NYC on bed bugs. Even though the city has tried its hand at bed bug seminars, trust me -- an event where Lou Sorkin is speaking is going to be on a much higher (and infinitely better-informed) plane.

Some Bedbuggers went back in 2006 and heartily recommended the NYENTSOC events. Lou organized a large auditorium this time so there would be lots of room for everyone who wants to come.

I also think Lou understands well that Bedbuggers can learn from information pest management pros and entomologists have, and that it works the other way around also -- the pros need to hear from people with bed bugs. There will be additional speakers on a variety of bed bug related topics, TBA.

But be warned, they may simply be encouraging people to rush in with the dry ice monitor, suggested by the last statement in Bill Ritter's blog post for today:

... my only advice to Nina Pineda, who tonight replaces the recently retired and much loved and respected Tappy Phillips as the on-air quarterback of the "7 On Your Side" consumer reporting franchise, is that one cannot replace a legend. One can merely succeed her.

Nina is a worthy choice for the job. She's competitive and compassionate, persistent and passionate, curious and caring. In other words, all the traits one needs to be a successful reporter, and a certainly a reporter in this beat.

Her first segment for our 11 o'clock newscast is likely to give some the creeps. Bed Bugs. But Nina tonight doesn't talk so much about the problem as she presents a solution.

Bed Bugs have mushroomed as a big bugaboo (sorry) in New York City. Now, Nina discovers a do-it-yourself remedy, for less than $20!

I may be wrong, but there have been a lot of articles along these lines lately. Unfortunately, if I am right, they are touting as a "remedy" what is at best a tool for determining if there's a problem. (At worst, in the wrong hands, it may be hazardous.)

This is the popular seminar given by Jonathan Boyar, A.C.E. of Ecologic Entomology. Representatives from Boston Inspectional Services expected to appear with citywide update.

Program is sponsored by Ecologic Entomology, Boston, MA. More info: Info@ecologicentomology.com

Hi,

Long standing viewers may recall a radio interview I gave earlier this year which turned out to be a relaxed and informative way to get the basic information and message out there. Since its broadcast I have asked a team of artists to do some work to turn the audio file into an animated slide show to illustrate the key points.

It arrived as a final version today and I have uploaded it to YouTube here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmxSKeaBwjE

Hope it helps people to explain some of the basics to friends, family and colleagues.

Below is a news release that we sent out last week. I thought everyone should be aware. If you know of anybody in the NY City, NJ, Philadelphia metro area, Buffalo or Chicagoland area looking for charitable service (they have to be in need, not just someone looking for free service) please tell them to apply because we do have participating companies in these areas. They need to apply ASAP as time is running out! Thanks.

Nationwide Charitable Holiday Bed Bug Program
Bed Bug Central coordinates local pest management firms to create a nationwide charitable bed bug program

LAWRENCE, NJ—For two Saturdays in December, Bed Bug Central will coordinate with local pest control companies to provide free charitable bed bug services for those in need who are suffering from bed bug infestations and do not have the means to improve their situation this holiday season.

The charity program is titled, “Take the Bite Out of the Holidays” and Bed Bug Central has partnered with several pest management firms, which have been approved for bedbugFREE membership, to donate charitable bed bug treatments.

By coordinating with companies across the nation, Bed Bug Central will make the holiday program a national event. The goal of the program is to encourage businesses across the nation to give back to the communities they service.

“Bed bugs can be very expensive to eliminate. This holiday season we wanted to give back to the community and provide some relief to those in need so that they can use their money to create a happier holiday without the frustration of dealing with bed bugs,” said Jeff White research entomologist and the visionary behind the holiday charity.

Applications are currently being accepted. For more information or to apply visit Bed Bug Central at www.bedbugcentral.com/holidays or call 609-799-1300.

Recipients will be announced on Dec. 5th and 10th.

Bed Bugs are on the rise in schools. An exact number of infestations can’t be determined, but the bed bug problems have gotten worse and infestations are becoming more common.

Last week in New York, P.S. 163 (an Upper West Side school) had bed bugs again!! There have been repeated outbreaks during the latest school year. A growing number of schools across the country are dealing unsuccessfully with the bed bug problem. The bed bugs come into schools from infested homes on children’s clothing etc.

In hopes to reduce the costly extermination fees, the PTA and teachers bought bags so students and teachers can protect their belongings.

Hi Everyone,

I am pleased to announce a new project that I am working on called:

Bed Bug Aware

This will be the second literary installment in the clear and commonsense bed bug series I have been working on and should be available at the start of 2010.

The new book will focus on the hospitality industry and what steps they can take to tackle the issue of bed bugs. Although not strictly relevant to this audience there is some overlap and advanced bedbugger have a lot of insight to share.

If there is anyone with a product that you think should be included in the reviews let me know, I am writing to all the suppliers in the next few days.

The associated website www.BedBugAware.com is being worked on in tandem and just like BedBugBeware.com will be used to post some of the latest information as and when it is available between versions of the book.

Please let me know if you have specific issues that you would like to see addressed in the book.

Regards,

These two are a bit different, but they're for people who manage properties, residences, etc. (Could not fit something which made more sense in the title bar!)

Bedbugs Seen: my local laundromats. Several times. Response by laundromat? Wipe machine. Response by Health Authorities? Unfortunately, is impossible to monitor. The dryer will kill them.

Your number one protection against bedbugs? Your own washer/dryer.

The problem I've seen is the homeless in my laundromat, using the various facilities and not having anything "cleaned" afterward. These poor people sleep on the street, and I have seen more times than I can count them coming in to use the dryers for their wet bedding, while they also put possessions from their shopping carts into the laundromat wheely carts that are used for clean laundry, carts that are NOT cleaned after they do so. I have never seen the laundromat wipe out a dryer or clean a cart after a homeless person has used it. And right afterward, I have witnessed people putting their clean laundry into these same carts, including the laundromat itself, for its drop-off service. (The laundromat also sorts any dirty laundry they receive in these carts).

This laundromat accepts drop-off service for multi-millionaires. This is a laundromat where houses sell for between 1 million and 13 million. There is no better one. I've looked, and there are bedbugs in other ones, too (I saw 5 machines at one laundromat with the bugs on top). I've used this laundromat for 15 years and this only started in the last few years - with the homelessness.

When I first moved to this neighborhood, there were NO homeless. Unfortunately, the rising cost of housing, as well as the closing of Mental Health institutions has meant many living on the streets. Then, the city enacted some bylaws that meant that these homeless people got ticketed for begging. Once they got several tickets, they were no longer allowed to be in the downtown core, or use the shelters there. This meant they moved into the suburbs where they currently sleep in doorways - and also, at the local youth hostels. (Note: be concerned about staying in a hostel for this reason).

This is what people should be worried about when doing laundry at a laundromat. With what I have witnessed I would ABSOLUTELY recommend NEVER dropping your laundry off!! IF you want to lessen your chance of bugs: DO NOT PUT YOUR CLEAN LAUNDRY INTO THE WHEELY BASKETS. DO NOT FOLD YOUR LAUNDRY ON TOP OF WASHERS (that's where I've seen bugs). DO NOT FOLD ON THE COMMON AREAS, where people store their dirty bags. Don't let people sort their dirty laundry on top of the washing machines you have your clean clothes in. (Tell them you have bugs - it's the ONLY way to stop people from doing this. Unfortunately, people get very offended when you ask - but you have to protect yourself.).

I've developed a good method of doing laundry to not bring bugs home:

You need: several rubbermaid containers & pillow cases. What you want to do is pre-sort your laundry before you get there, into the pillowcases. Put the laundry in the pillowcase directly into the washers, including the pillowcases. Don't sort there. Make sure you wipe down the containers as well as your washing machines, as the bugs hide at the top. When the washer is done, put wet clothing DIRECTLY into the container to take to the dryer. DO NOT USE THE BASKETS!!! Then, fold directly from the dryer into a pillowcase inside your container. Once you arrive home, leave the containers in the hall, pull out the pillowcases. Remove your outdoor pants and shirts before taking the clothing into your bedroom, put these in a plastic bag. Once you have put away the laundry, either vacuum the containers or put them in your shower and hose down. Vaccuum your front entrance way. Shower. Vacuum your car regularly, shake off your coat/shoes after driving your car, leave them at your entrance, do not put them in your bedroom.

This may seem a tad obsessive. But historically, people have been battling the bedbug for centuries, with or without pest control. In Victorian times, households would not allow their live-in staff to come into the house with any of their own bedding or clothing, as they knew it would infest the entire house. Likewise, sailing ships would not allow sailors to bring bedding and used hammocks as an alternative to dissuade bugs.

I've been looking for a new apartment, and I've noticed that the only buildings that don't have bedbugs are the ones that have insuite laundry. Even if the building is next to a building on the Bedbug Registry, the building has insuite laundry - and doesn't have them. I truly believe this is the number one way to not get bugs, other than using the method I've described above.

Note: you could also be risking your clothing if you are dropping off drycleaning at a laundromat. The same people handling the laundry also handle your drycleaning. I think it's important to look at the living conditions of the people doing so, and you will know if there is any risk....

Interesting on the progress with bed bugs with in the last 2yrs. Good that steps are finally being addressed, but I feel as in the clip with Cooper...should be taken on a National Level. (long ago for that matter)

Hello NJ, where are you?!?!?!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZSHUBG47ks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_an87F8laDE
We need to get the bed bug awareness on a National Level NOW don't ya think?

As a parent, I fear everyday when my child comes off the school bus as to if I should "take precautions" when she comes home from school. It's a huge mental battle for me on what is "normal" and "not." In many ways it seems like we are all sitting ducks in await of another infestation as so my children can still lead a normal and happy life. From what I gather, we must go on "normally" as before we had bed bugs, even if we do get them again.....for there is no way to avoid running into bed bugs without putting yourself in a bubble. For me, single family home, many small kids...I have no landlord, no govt assistance. I know with all the activity in the home the only way out of another infestation w/o losing everything again is going to cost me $8k+ which I don't have. The final results of our last infestation was Chapt 13. But still I chose (with much fear) to live as normally as we can for the health and happiness of the family.

We rid our infestation 2 yrs ago. What fears me most is we were least likely to get bed bugs according to what I've read. We have not traveled in over 6 yrs. We live in a single family detached house hours from the city. Our children were babies and not in school at the time. And this was 2 yrs ago.

We got the infestation from having a close family member sit on our couch and/or stay the night. That family member hasn't traveled in over 15 yrs and barely has a social life.

If this happened to us 2 yrs ago, how bad is the spread of bed bugs now?

I say it's long over due time for the government to stand up on this no?

Ok, enough of my rant..Felt good to get it out though. Thanks seeing through my eyes a bit. If God lead ya to it, he'll also get ya through it. I've been told! And it's true.

But Please, no matter what state you live, write your local and state government, health depts, to push them to take some action. It's slow moving but as we see, it helps. It's for our children.
