Another normal Saturday morning, woken up by a radio researcher asking to have a chat about bed bugs on air and hour or so later.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p00541w6/Vanessa_Feltz_21_11_2009/

2:36:16 in

Nothing earth shattering about the information for seasoned bed buggers but its all about getting the message out there.

Look and avoid is much better than suffering.

I will be doing another podcast session later int he day and will post the link when its online.

Nobugs, it would be comical and outstanding. If I can find one I'm going to make it happen.

David, it was good meeting you too. The run-around is just on pause for a month or so. My schedule decided to let me catch my breath. It picks up again after the New Year.

I'm trying to catch-up on some posts out there as I've been AWOL for the past few months with different topics.

I wanted to do a Bed Bug TV Halloween episode dressed up as Cookie Monster but damn if I can find an adult size Cookie costume. There's probably a reason for that having to do with maturity but we'll leave that discussion for another thread!

The audio feeds from most of the presentations are available from NPMA on CD.

Some of the presentations have online powerpoint slides that are available for attendees.

I don't have the link available at the moment, but I will research it & post it later.

I plan on purchasing the bed bug related CDs & can post some of the highlights from the presentations when I receive them.

One way conversation? This is getting a little confusing.

In the other thread Danno mentions that in his/her experience (know bed bug infestations) female complain of bites 80% of the time and males 20% of the time. I then mentioned Potters field study and that what he found was male or female made no difference in complaint of bieng bit . You then went on to say that Danno's observation are probably correct. I have no dog in this hunt, I was only passing along information received at PestWorld. You asked for PestWorld information, I tried to passed some along and your upset? I don't get it?

Maybe we can have a whip round and send bait as the bedbugger correspondent next year, we would only need to raise about $3,000 per delegate.

It was however not possible to record video or sound in the lectures and certainly one of the BB ones there was a request not to take pictures due to the nature of the information on some of the slides.

As LVK9 says there is a lot of learning to be done although PestWorld was more of a trade event than a scientific conference for presenting papers and having detailed discussions.

Bait, I posted some information in another thread about a study that Micheal Potter did on bite reactions. I was only relaying the information that he shared at Pest World. In your reply to this information you thought his information was incorrect. So are you looking for all new and addition information from the show or just information you agree with? This is a learning processes for all involved, with every new study comes new information based on that study.

Keep your hair on, it is being planned but those that need to come together have been busy. It does not help that we occupy different time zones.

However in summary a few good lectures (you will have to wait for the podcast for a summary) and lots of new mattress encasements (if you are into such things).

Apart from that and an awesome flight over the Grand Canyon most of the advanced I encountered came from one on one conversations and getting to actually meet the people who had written a lot of what I read.

I was hoping to get new and additional information from the experts who attended Pestworld Vegas (2009). All I've found so far was chit chat about hotel rooms.

Does anyone have anything to report?

The recent NYC seminar with Drs. Potter and Miller was pretty well covered, and I appreciate that, Nobugs.

Islandgal, I won't pretend it's easy not to worry about these things in Toronto (ask me when I last saw a movie :P), but I wouldn't say it's much worse here than in Vancouver, from the sounds of it.

You can maybe avoid movie theatres or places in areas that are especially overrun, maybe check out the bed bug registry, but I'd hate to see Toronto be painted in such a dire light. I say this as someone desperate to visit NYC again, but too afraid to after my bed bug experience.

My sister also lives in a NJ senior's building where apartments are being sprayed, including her own. But she steadfastly maintains she has no bugs since she hasn't seen any and has no bite marks.

The amount of energy she spends on protesting and painting herself as a victim would be better spent cleaning up her hoarder's mess and allowing the exterminator to find her baseboards.

At some point, the law needs to take over and move these people out of the way so the building can be treated. Renters should not be allowed to prevent maintenance of any kind.

Ditto. With nursing care, if necessary. This would be akin to a resident refusing entry for a burst pipe or a fire. By some lucky chance, she's not being bit, but more likely, she's not reacting. And, if she moved from an infested building, she may well have brought them along. Someone please tell her son that BB are not lice. They only remain on the host's body in extreme circumstances.

The holdout tenant should be moved to another location until the building can be treated again. In this case, the welfare of the other 99 tenants is more important. Does she really have a legal right to prevent the landlord's exterminators from entering and spraying?

Hi Everyone,

I am pleased to announce a new project that I am working on called:

Bed Bug Aware

This will be the second literary installment in the clear and commonsense bed bug series I have been working on and should be available at the start of 2010.

The new book will focus on the hospitality industry and what steps they can take to tackle the issue of bed bugs. Although not strictly relevant to this audience there is some overlap and advanced bedbugger have a lot of insight to share.

If there is anyone with a product that you think should be included in the reviews let me know, I am writing to all the suppliers in the next few days.

The associated website www.BedBugAware.com is being worked on in tandem and just like BedBugBeware.com will be used to post some of the latest information as and when it is available between versions of the book.

Please let me know if you have specific issues that you would like to see addressed in the book.

Regards,

David Cain

I was advised to get a PO Box # as I live only about 15 min to border and have packtite delivered to the PO Box #. What I need to know is would I be stopped from bringing it over the border. I was given money for my birthday this past Sunday specifically for the purpose of buying a packtite.

I now have bedbugs again, can't see them cause I can't see small tiny objects but discovered about 8 bites on my back. Am waiting to hear back from LL to see if they are going to treat me in this new building (they moved me here because couldn't get rid of infestation in old building). New superintendent says they have never had an infestation here, but I know differently (people do talk, they seem to forget that); there was an infestation in building opposite mine and still trying to find out how many treatments, etc.

Me too. Do you think it would help to start a petition to get Packtites in Canada? I've been trying to figure a way to get one through friends in the States or to get one shipped to a border town for pick-up. I wonder if the customs guys would stop me if I told them what it was for?

Actually, when I came back from my trip where I had my hotel encounter with bbs I was just dying for them to inspect my luggage (invariably happens to me) and to ask why is it that you have everything in a ziploc bag ... would have been interesting to see if they maintained their steely composure then ... wouldn't you know it, that time I didn't get inspected!

No, they're not available, but one company got one or two and may offer it as part of their services. (I don't know if they still do, but I know it was mentioned when we spoke)

Believe me, once packtites are available I'm getting one for my probably future inlaws who travel all the time for work. :P

What I am impressed with is how many exterminators there are who know how to handle things properly, full on vacuum, steam, spray and repeat. They range in prices, and some offer more services than others (Packtiteing, etc.), others are more thorough, etc. But there seem to be fewer baseboard jockeys as is thrown around here.

Just anecdotally, it's impressive how bad things have gotten in Toronto within the last couple years. I knew one boy who had bed bugs back around 2005ish. After my own infestation (from a friend), I had two other friends just outside of the GTA report issues (unrelated, and not infested from me). And still more since.

Also, many folks I know see bed bugs as something that will inevitably happen to them one day, and are preparing as such. Roaches have been bad around here, happening even to the cleanest of buildings, and many are already vigilant in watching for them.

I know the report doesn't seem promising, but I do think knowledge is getting out there and people are more informed than we realize. Of course, there are always some who just don't see it. I know one girl who lives on the cusp of one of Toronto's REALLY bad areas. She's moving, but was mentioning her building is really nice and clean, so bugs wouldn't be a problem. I just had to shake my head, really. :P

It'd be nice if the TTC got plastic seating, ala NYC subways, that they could clean easier and might be harder to have bed bugs nest in. I'm always nervous when I sit on those red velvet-like seats.

Ahh but sooner or later they will all realise that rather than band aiding and drawing attention to hot spots it will be more efficient to communicate the issue with everyone at the same time and set about a concerted public awareness campaign.

I am currently hoping that occurs before my retirement but am not holding out too much luck, I might have to suggest to PBS that they do a Bed bug TV special although I am not sure if Jeff is a bird bird or oscar fan.

Just to add...the Boston seminar **is** open to the general public. I went to this same presentation given in March so I can vouch for that. Though the audience mostly includes housing staff such as property managers, residence coordinators, landlords. etc., it is also is open to "residents." I found the focus--on those who have to address the problem--very enlightening. The presenter knows his stuff and was very open to answering questions. If anyone has any questions, they can send me a pm.

Cambridge has a huge transient student population with young people (who tend to like discarded furniture) moving in and out of apartments and dorms every fall and summer. The city has their work cut out for them. They need to work with all the local universities to get this problem solved as this goes beyond the housing authority buildings etc. that nobugs mentions in the blog piece (I did not click on the video.)

A friend was telling me of a Harvard freshman, born and raised all 18 years in NYC, who she encountered this fall. Just before the first day of school he was asking a local Mass. based relative to take him to Bed Bath and Beyond so he could buy a bedbug pillow protector for his pillow, because somehow he had lost the protected pillow he had started with.

Good news, right? Students already educated about the bedbug problems and being cautious? Sorry, but the story has a bad ending. As he and the relative are leaving the store with the newly purchased protectors, he launches into a story about the great week he had doing dorm crew, where students are hired onto teams to empty out dorm rooms that have been used by summer school students. One reason students love being on dorm crew is because of all the great loot they can find that summer students have left behind. He mentioned that one of his great finds was an enormous floor cushion (or some upholstered thing). So at the same moment he is dutifully shopping for a bedbug cover for the pillow as his NYC mom taught him, he is also scavenging other people's discarded cushions. Smart!

Also, MIT runs a very popular international students' furniture exchange, where last year's students can leave furniture, rugs, etc. for the incoming students.

Hi Winston,

Nathalie did say she works for M&M as I said here. She said she worked there doing "research" and "writing," so it's interesting to learn she is a marketing director...

On the other hand, the RR site (in its "For more information" links next to the article and under the short video clip) is promoting Bed Bug Central (which provided stock photos) and "Quest" (apparently the dog team shown on their website is the same as the one doing Nathalie's inspection). There's a link to the Quest k9 site and the Quest pest control site.

But no link to M&M. It was probably a conscious choice not to use her employer for the treatment, or to promote them. Unless of course there's some connection between M&M and Quest.

I doubt any pop show is going to get everything correct but it does not sound as bad as the bedbugger pre show pundits predicted. I do on one hand find it a bit too coincidental that one of the "bed bug victims" Natalie Raben just happens to be the marketing director for a pest control firm?

While I was obviously thrilled to see packtite get a good review and some face time on the show, I was surprised they did not mention this site or link to it on her more info section of her website. When I was approached by the producer and asked to send a packtite, I specifically told them they must check out bedbugger.com and include it. Shows how much clout I have! I knew nobugsonme wouldn't include the absence of bedbugger.com in the comments about the show, but for me that was the big omission.

I know That it probably is NONE of my business an all!! BUT being tho I have a big mouth and sometimes don't know how to hold my tong like others here!! Would it be a possibility that you could require them to at least mention the site!!

David James,

Thanks for mentioning Bedbugger when you were contacted by the Rachael Ray folks -- I really appreciate your support for the site.

I think this site does not lend itself well to soundbites, and people who visit and see the main page has news may have trouble finding what they would deem useful (FAQs or forum). A long-term goal has been to restructure the main page to show this three-part structure more readily. I am going to do that when I am able to.
