Hi all,
I'm going to apologize in advance for this panicky post, but I'm not sure what to do. My toddler has randomly had bites on her neck and face that we thought were mosquito bites until it turned cold. I started hunting down other causes and was horrified to discover it might be bb. So I went to her room with a flashlight and found a speck of blood under her pillow and a couple of scab-looking things there. Further inspection didn't turn up much on the bed itself, maybe some poop. But the bedrails (that came from a friend who got them at a garage sale) had some concerning stuff in the seams that looked like it could be shells, eggs, etc.
SO, I've been researching and got a lot of conflicting opinions, and I'm not sure what to do from here. I'm not willing to leave her in that bed and use her as bait.
So here's my plan. Please tell me if there's something I can do better. I want to throw out the mattress and box springs, and the bedrails are already gone. I want to put the head and foot boards in our attic, where the cold weather this winter should kill any stragglers. I plan to take all of her clothes, stuffed animals, etc. out, wash/dry them in hot water and then put them in tupperwares. AND on Monday I plan to call a pest person. Is my plan all wrong?
I've already bagged the mattress and steamed the box spring/frame and vacuumed the room, froze her sheets and jammies and favorite animals. And now I'm washing/drying them all.
Thank you for any thoughts!!

Check with your PCO.
AFAIK, plastic is not BB's favorite material, and since it's a smooth surface, less risk of BB making it their home. Most likely, the PCO will not treat the bags, but after treatment, any bugs on the bag "should" step off to feed and then they're doomed. With any bag, you need to inspect the surface before opening to make sure there are no bugs hanging around (and will inadvertently end up inside), so check the zip top and the bottom pleat (if your bag has one). Also, don't overload the pleated bags, as the pleats do sometimes blow out. As per laundry, you can a. inspect the bags as per above, b. get a plastic laundry basket to protect the bottom of the bag. if possible only place your basket on smooth, hard, uncluttered surfaces, less likely to have BB hanging out. You can rinse off the basket in your tub later. You are going to be a pro at this in no time.

What about a bag that you set on the laundry room floor while putting all your clean/dry clothes into it, for about 10 minutes? And that the bottom of the bag hit the stairs a little bit on the way up to my apartment. It's an apartment complex (not the same building I'm in) and I don't know at all if anyone else has them, and I don't know where to put these bags- I know they're clean on the inside but not sure about the outside. I don't have a garage or porch or whatever to put them on, to really isolate them. I haven't been treated yet (PCO comes Monday). Should I bring the bags back into my bedroom, or leave them by my door in the living room? (That's where they are right now and I'm now having thoughts of some bugs having escaped and now spreading/hiding in my living room or worse, going out the front door to someone else's place.) Please help me... I'm sorry for all the questions, I'm just kinda freakin out again.

I haven't used the rest, but I'm on my fifth can of Bedlam. It works well but I don't think the residual lasts a week--more like four or five days. It comes to your house in a very indiscreet box that blaringly says "Bedbug Spray" in big letters. Then it sits outside your door for all the neighbors to see till you get home from work.

But I have to say I'd be lost without it. I don't spray the top of my airbed with it. I do that with alcohol. But I spray the sides of it with Bedlam every day.

Bugs can migrate between rooms and units via holes and utility spaces. That's how they may have arrived at your place, from a neighbor, about whom the LL might not know or might not admit. The cable itself, as Doug, says, should not be a problem.

To give you some perspective, in BB treatment, the PCO treats infested surfaces and harborages (one hopes). The poison stays behind for a few days. Bugs on your cable and other less vulnerable items, even if not treated, will eventually step out to feed and will cross the poison between the item and you.

Sealing gaps is something best left for after treatment.

Bed bugs can travel on the cable's plastic surface. Seal the area around the cable where it goes into the wall. Moving the cable off the floor isn't likely to make a difference... I doubt that they will prefer the cable surface.

I would not use a pack tight this way, and I'd be careful heat treating wooden instruments.

A PTcirculates warm air throughout the enclosure for even heating. It is likely not effective in heating evenly outside itself. PT aims at 140F, which may damage laminated wood products on ways that are not obvious, but affect acoustics. A PT is sealed when operating to prevent escape of BB, a cardboard is not.

In summary, too hot, poor circulation, poor containment.

This might be one of the things to bag with a pest strip. Please search the boards and review thus technique carefully before executing.

OK as I am trying to clear my apartment etc, I noticed something I'd never have thought anything of before... My cable TV connection is in the bedroom and I have a connecting cord that sits on the floor and goes from the bedroom all the way to the living room where my TV is. It's plastic coated but I'm thinking now that the bugs could possibly be much more widespread in my apartment than I thought, if they can travel that way. The cord is not really near my bed, but I mean it is in the same room. Unfortunatley I guess the bugs have already spread that way if it's going to, but as an added help, should I unhook it and get rid of the cord, or what??? Thanks...

Hi, all:

Sorry to open up this old thread, but I'm looking for more recent comments/thoughts on the efficacy of Sprayway Goodnight (in lieu of Bedlam).

We've had three treatments now (by a PCO who used Suspend) on our baseboards, furniture and floors. Our last treatment was on November 6. I've had several bites in between each treatment. My husband isn't sensitive, so he's not sure if he's been bitten since the treatments. We're sticking with the bagging protocol and slowly Packtiting all of our belongings that can't go into the dryer (a rather time consuming process!). Hopefully we'll be in the clear by January.

I'm sleeping on a tiny folding Ikea bed, and my husband is on the couch (since we took our bed to the landfill a while ago). Both were treated three times by the PCO, but I'm pretty sure I'm still being bitten in both places, so I've sprayed both my mattress and the couch with Sprayway in between the last two treatments, and since the last treatment. I don't trust that couch. Though I haven't seen live bugs in it (and the PCO cleared it), there seems to be an increase in little red blotches on the underside of the cushions.

The bites I've been getting since the third treatment have been on my face or neck (the rest of my body is totally covered when I sleep or walk around our place), which I'm guessing is because I've been bitten on the couch when I've laid there, or maybe there are stray rogues hanging out in our piles of books on the floor (which are waiting there to be Packtited) that made it into my bedframe before I put the Climbups down there. But there's residual on the bed frame, couch and floor...hopefully any living bugs won't last long?

OK, I'm straying way off-topic here. All of this said, since I'm totally broke (after the very expensive PCO treatment and all of the purchases of other stuff for the arsenal...you all know, I don't have to list them all), I went with Sprayway instead of Bedlam (though I did go through one can of Bedlam), since it's a fraction of the cost of Bedlam.

Are people finding now that Sprayway is working for them? Does it also kill eggs, and have an effective residual like Bedlam? Or am I just spraying a toxic contact killer?

Thank you,

Yes, the I think I had a mild case of silicoses from applying too much dust.
Let me afford you another theory based on my experience... I happened to have a nervous breakdown as well, I had a doctor put me on tranqs on christmas eve because I was freaking out. It's sort of complicated to explain but it goes something like this; I was having strong anaphylactic attacks. I also was having panic attacks. These two things fed each other, because an allergic attack manifests a lot of the same feelings as a panic attack. And likewise acute stress can worsen allergic reactions.
Ergo- I had a nervous breakdown. What I eventually learned was that I could drastically reduce my allergic response psychosomatically. What i learned from THAT was how to nurse my immune system back to health holistically. The reason I bring all this would be that BB's can cause skin conditions like hives, which look and behave just like temporary BB bites. It has been my experience that encountering things which bring back the BB horror (pre-infested items, or the encased bed I slept on for months) would elicit a psychosomatic response that could result in HIves, rashes, or nausea. Yes, pesticides can be extremely unhealthy, you can read their MSDS to find out to what degree. My thoughts are that because your "bites" manifested in the shower this would be something called "shower urticaria (hives)" which is prob. from the heat of the water meeting your newly sensitive skin, combined with a psychosomatic response from your encounter w/ the old things in your closet which brought back the experience.
It's like the Bedbugs are haunting you.... creepy eh?

Like you I came back to this forum after months because of this lingering voice that said "WTF happened?"

For Bras - after washing in the sink I put them in the freezer overnight - cold should work too, no?

cold is trickier. Most people here will probably say that a zero degree F freezer takes longer than overnight.

The expansion of freezing water might affect the fabric.

You might not like putting on a frozen bra inthe morning.

A dip in 120f water for 5 minutes should do.

Dr Oz did what he does best: get people to take a look at what's icky and learn more about it. He talked about a nationwide epidemic that can affect everyone. He linked bites to asthma, impetigo and anaphylactic shock. He had a PCO inspect a typical bedroom and encourage people to call in the experts. It was Bedbugs 101 for many folks here and left me wishing he'd do a full hour.

Hello there.

I have not been on here in awhile but I wanted to come back on and share my story because I think it might help many people out there who might be going through what I just went through over the past few months. Here is the breakdown...As you can see from my name, I WAS having a nervous breakdown and now, I am nervous breakdown free.

I went on vacation in mid August to Colorado and came back with distinct bites on my ankles and on the back of my knee cap. They were in a line, all in a row. As the week went on, I got 6 more bites and noticed the red comet like blood stains on our white linens. When I went online, it immediately pointed to BED BUGS. I had really never heard of bed bugs in California but this website scared the bejesus out of me and I was immediately convinced this is what I had. I called a PCO in the Los Angeles area who came out the next day. He took a look around my house and told me that although he didn't see anything, he could "tell by the bites on my legs that we had bed bugs" and that because we were on vacation the week before, we must have brought them home with us. He immediately charged us hundreds of dollars, told me to wrap up all of me bedding and my other linens, and he proceeded to douse my home with delta dust and another mixture of dust. ( I know. I know.)

He said that my BB problem was so small that that should take care of it. He told me to bag all of my clothing, linens etc, wash and dry, and not come back into the house for the rest of the day. So that is what we did.

The next day, we came back in, and we hired a cleaning crew to clean up all of the dust. It was EVERYWHERE. He told me to leave a one inch perimeter around the edges, which we did. A few days later, more "bites." This time, on my stomach. We waited a week, called him back, and he came back in a week later and sprayed with pymtherin instead. Again, we bagged, washed, dried. This time, we kept everything bagged. We sprayed the entire house, all furniture, everything. We came back in, and again, days later, more "bites." I couldn't believe it. I was literally having a breakdown. I would come on this forum and beg for help. I would cry daily. I never ONCE saw an actual bed bug. I started to think that maybe we had mites? I would get "bitten" in the middle of the day, sitting on the couch in the living room. If we had had such a small infestation, how did it become so large where now they were eveywhere?

So, I basically moved out of my home with my animals and moved in to my parents house. I called 3 different PCO companies who call came out, including an entomologist. They laid sticky traps, searched the entire house including the mattresses and couches etc. They found nothing. I hired a caulker who caulked all the floors (no carpet in the house) so there were no openings. I bought climb up monitors and they were always empty. I literally had no life for 2 months living out of one plastic bag and wearing the same 3 outfits. It was a nightmare.

So my original PCO came back a final 3rd time and told me they were going to spray one more time. Even though I was hesitant, they told me this time, they would get rid of them. They came back 5 weeks after I initially called them and sprayed. 3 days later, I came in the house for an afternoon and that evening in the shower, I had 8 huge "bites" all over my torso that were as large as quarters. HUGE WELTS. I literally started crying. I went to the doctor and they injected them with cortisol. Ouch.

In the midst of my tears, I started getting suspicious. How in the WORLD were BB getting me at the daytime on my stomach like that without me noticing? I wasn't even spending the night there. I would go in and sit at the kitchen table and work on the computer for 3 hours and sometimes I would wear pants and a sweatshirt. It was weird. I started to think that it was possible that maybe I had bird mites or some invisible problem but what would be the possibility that I had both? Or did I not EVER have bed bugs?

So, I hired a full painting crew and cleaning crew. I paid $4000 and had the entire interior of my 1800 sq foot home painted, ceiling to floor. Everything. Then, I had a cleaning crew come in deep clean my home including all of my furniture, etc. We threw out our rugs, the one couch the PCO had doused and two chairs.

We cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. We took the 50 contractor bags that had been cleaned and dried back to the laundrymat and we cleaned and dried them again. I hired an air conditioning duct cleaner to come in and ran the fire places all day.

We moved back in. 10 weeks after the initial bites occured.

I have now been back in for 4 weeks. NOT ONE SINGLE BITE OR MARK. Sleeping through the night on our white sheets, no stains, no weird itching. Nothing.

Yesterday, we opened our guest bedroom closet which is the one place we never go in and the last place that wasn't deep cleaned of 4 or five boxes. We emptied it and deep cleaned it and found remnants of delta dust on the boxes in there. I took a shower after and what do I see on my stomach that night for the first time in weeks? A big red welt on my stomach just like the others. Normally I would freak out and think this was a bug but it is not. It is the chemicals.

So... here is my theory. I could be wrong, but...The chemicals that they spray were leaving marks and "bites" that were making me think that I was still getting "bitten" even though I really wasn't. The only bites I ever got that were in a row and itched were back in August and then never again. So for all of Sept and Oct, I was going through a nervous breakdown and it was my own doing.

My husband is convinced he had a small problem that was probably taken care of by the 1st round of chemcials.

Had a read a post like this when I was going through what I was going though, I would have felt way better. So I wanted to share with you.

Also, this PCO is in Los Angeles and should not be handling BB. He didn't even know it was BB for sure and still treated for it which someone told me is not even legal. The other 3 PCO's who came told us that his application of the Delta Dust in our home was illegal and the places and the amount that he applied was illegal and not consistent with the labeling. One PCO refused to enter our home because of how toxic it was. :( There was Delta Dust literally everywhere in our house.

I hope this helps someone out there!!!!

It suddenly occurred to me to read about carpet beetles, since they are mentioned here pretty often. When I googled-imaged it, I realized that the pretty but menacing looking bug I killed a couple of months ago actually definitely WAS a beetle bug. 100%. I remember it very well bc it was unlike any other bug I have ever seen inside, and we have seen many kind of insects here due to living on the ground floor, having no basement, and having a backyard. The bug was the spotted kind, not the black kind.
So - is it the kind of thing where if I saw one, then there are more? I know we also have/had begbugs since 2 separate dogs identified them, but is it possible we continue to get skin reactions to carpet beetles rather than bedbugs? Do carpet beetles affect everyone? In other words, if that's what it was, my husband would have a reaction too? (He has no skin reactions at all through all this, to bedbugs or anything else). What are carpet beetles skin reactions typically like?

Thanks very much to anyone who can help.

Sounds like carpet beetles is a likely cause. The reaction does not occur through contact its a little more complex and bizarre than that.

I would suggest that you take some boiled water that has cooled and mist all the carpets of your home to see if this cuts things out. The reaction to hairs in the environment is only solved by either removingt he hairs or stopping them from flying about and interacting with you.

There is also a lot of sense in the medical advice you have been given, sometimes a low dose of antihistamines will dull the bodies response and allow it to tolerate things once the course of medication has finished. The approach however does not work with bed bugs and the only solution there is removal of the bed bugs.

Also remember that it's also possible that you're being bitten somewhere else.

I had confirmed bed bugs in June 2008. I had a scare in August 2008. I had my PCO come back in and inspect and he found nothing.

But I knew I had bed bug bites.

Eventually I figured out that I must have been bitten when I went to a movie theater, since that was the only thing I'd done differently in that time.

I know it's frustrating when you can't find the source of the bites, but if it's not bed bugs, that's actually good news of a sort since most pests are easier to get rid of than bed bugs once you identify what the source is.

The fact that you're getting bitten (or reacting) but your significant other isn't could mean that he just doesn't react and/or that you're getting bitten/exposed somewhere other than home.

Wish I could be more help in terms of specifics. Hang in there, and please consider coming back to update us when you get to the bottom of the mystery. The more information we have about the source of mystery bites the more help we can be to other people who are suffering from them in the future.

I agree... its the not knowing that is making me nuts too. I read up on so much stuff last night on the net and barely slept at all because i felt creepy crawlies all night and kept turning the light on and searching and found NOTHING.

I with you though, I almost wish I could find a bed bug so I could just make a plan to deal with them and move on with my life, you know? I'm a 'planner' by nature so being completely out of control and having no plan to follow is literally driving me insane.

Ah well... keep me posted on your progress... and I'll do the same... good luck :)

Thanks Eclaire, and yes, keep me posted on your progress as well! I forgot to mention in the above post that the K9 teams DID alert to the presence of bed bugs twice (on two separate days, two weeks apart, two separate dogs/handklers) before I got treated for them (this would have been October 3rd and 10th I think). Never was an actual bug, egg, casing, or spec/spot found though. Now the same teams are not alerting on anything - so I should feel better about it, but the bites keep on coming. I've been trying to convince myself that it's something else - and all of my family and friends are trying to do so too but with the high cost (money, time) that comes with these things I'd rather seem crazy then spread them around. :)

Hey Spideyjg and BBcoukHome,

Thanks for responding here. I have seen carpet beetle larvae crawlin' around recently - I've never seen them before and I panicked when I saw one for the first time back in September, but I like the little wooly guys now. :) I have read about the hairs of them from your previous posts - but would this reaction occur immediately or after some time has passed? I ask because the bites I receive happen no matter where I am - driving in my car, at work, at home when I wake up, in the shower, or when I'm in completely different places (for example, last night I was at an award banquet and had three bites show up on my left elbow during dinner). I also had grabbed one and rubbed it against my arm (poor little thing) but had no reaction at all - I kept the area so rubbed circled in pen, but nothing ever showed up there.

I've searched the internets for as much data as possible - so I realize that it could be many other things, and I'm trying to rule them out one by one (scabies medicine and another thorough washing of all my bed linens and sheets didn't get the problem to stop so I can rule them out - my doctor has prescribed Xyzal and Singulair (antihistamine, and a leukotriene receptor antagonist) to break my body of any delayed reactions it may be having as allergic reactions). I will most likely have the PCO's that treated me down one more time - and if they can't find anything a third time then... argh! I'll be both happy, and sad I suppose. :)

BBcoukHome, I'm trying to use a calculated approach as you suggest - it's just frustrating because like so many others I want an easy solution. :) I keep hoping to wake up one night covered in bed bugs so I can actually know what's going on. It's the not knowing that's the worst - as I don't want to have the PCO's that have treated/scanned multiple times now back if I honestly don't have bed bug problems any longer.

Well... back to work with me! And thanks again for the input!

This forum provides many answers to those two questions. There are lots of contact killers, the most common of which is alcohol (is it 91% isopropyl?) I think Bedlam, too.

Regarding the vacuum, again the forum has instructions for collecting eggs in a stocking, like a lady's knee-hi, that protects your vacuum cleaner.

A big NYC PCO (not KQ) indicates that their ento has determined that packing items in air-tight containers for 2 weeks will successfully treat items. It's been discussed in threads here (search on "mothballs"). Note that this is an "off-label" approach with inherent risks and legal issues.

Either purchase a steam machiene like the Shark or something affordable and use that to clean with, use it slowly and detailed to achieve high temps to kill eggs. Bedlam is a great product for egg control located within cracks, screw holes, ya know... Spray away but always have the window open and a respirator. Eggs are really not that difficult to see if your in good lighting so purchase a decent flashlight, inspect each area carefully before treatment, then either chemically treat or steam the areas needed to be cleaned.. Regular cleaning product like murphy's and whatever else, well, I wouldn't put my money on soap!! Steam the floors or were ever you would use cleaning product when it comes to BedBugs specifically.

Nobody ever read my urticating hairs theory?
http://bedbugger.com/forum/topic/urticating-hairs-and-scales-a-mystery-bite-cause#post-59297

It should be in the FAQ posting sticky above.

Bites with no signs is one of the hardest things to diagnose either on site or online because quite often it is a process of ruling things out rather than finding the cause in many cases.

I have often sat thinking I will start to write a guide but it really is a massively daunting task and takes me too far from my core speciality. I also think one of the best resources comes from DR Potter in the form of:

http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ent58.asp

The only thing I would add is that if you find a bed bug sample but cant find any faecal traces and bites persist think bat bugs or martin / bird bugs as a next logical step. I was discussing this with someone states side today and it would appear that in certain parts of the US bat and martin bugs are possibly as common as bed bugs but they tend not to be an issue in more urban and built up environments.

Either way keeping accurate data is essential such as bite numbers against dates and even bite locations can help. I would also suggest that with mysteries such as this finding a consulting entomologist or an investigatory pest controller with a keen eye for detail would be good paths to look at.

Hope this helps.

Oh wow! Thanks for the response.

So you have rec'd alot more bites than myself so far anyways. From what I have read online, I understand that bed bugs don't really bite that much in one night? I could be wrong, but I think thats correct.

We don't have a K9 unit here (I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada) as far as I know. If we did, I would have them come in right away.

I think I am going to put my bed frame legs in some sort of container with mineral oil in them to see if I can catch anything. At this point, I just want to know what the hell it is, so I can make a plan to deal with it, you know? Of course you know.

Yeah, the mite symptoms don't really fit me either. We did have some birds living in our eaves back in the spring but they left around May, and the bites only started the end of September. If there were bird mites, they would have started biting sooner, and we would see/have other symptoms. At least that is what I can gather from what I have read.

Ah well... keep me posted on your progress... and I'll do the same... good luck :)

Hey Eclaire,

The amount of bites has been rather odd and consistent. I'll elaborate:

The first set of bites I received numbered roughly 34 - all of these bites were located around my ankles and lower legs. These bites were terribly itchy and would 'flare' up constantly - especially at night. All of them looked like raised red pimples - they itched TERRIBLY and scratching would only make them itch even MORE. They were in lines around my sock line, or clusters of 2-4 in spots up my calves or thighs. This would have been around August 29th.

Afterwards I began to get an occasional other singular bite that would be similar and were located on my legs and/or feet. (This would have been from September 3rd - September 17th). I estimate I received 3 - 4 other bites over this two week period. After these two weeks new bites began to appear on my arms - however these bites were different then the other ones: they didn't itch quite the same (scratching would relieve the itch as opposed to making it worse) and they would fade away after 12 - 72 hours. They also looked quite different. This lasted until about October 3rd (when my first PCO treatment started). I'd say that on average I received about 2-5 bites a week.

On October 4th the bites began increasing in number. I began to receive bites everday as opposed to spaced out. I would get 1 - 5 bites - on my arms, legs, or stomach/chest. They also began showing up at regular times (either at 3:30 am, 6:30 am, or 6:30 pm) which I found very very odd.

On October 9th I received about another 37 bites all on my right calf. These resembled the FIRST bites I had got - raised pimples that itched like crazy. HOWEVER I had been outside walking in tall grass and now believe those bites to be chigger bites, as opposed to bed bug bites. This now begs the question about the OTHER bites I had got initially - were they chigger bites as well? I had been walking around in sandals outside the day before and was walking in wet grass... if so did I get bed bugs from some mysterious place immediately afterwards?

After October 9th I have been constantly under attack. I receive between 1 - 5 bites each day, mostly on my arms but occasionally on my legs or stomach/chest and they appear randomly throughout the day as opposed to certain times. They itch for roughly 10 - 15 minutes and then remain as raised bumps for 12 - 72 hours - fading away afterwards. Those initial bites, and the 37 other ones on my calf? They are STILL there - but none of them itch anymore, they're just dark red spots now.

Anyway - I hope the info helps somewhat! I'm not experiencing any 'crawling' feelings either - just bite like reactions to SOMETHING. Since I've been cleared by two K9 teams so I should think it's not bed bugs - but I don't think I'm ever going to stop worrying until the bites stop.

Oh and the mite theory... I am throwing that one around too, but I thought that I would have caught them on glue pads AND if I've had mites for 2 months, like bed bugs they would have multiplied a trillion times over and I would be seeing signs. From what I have read on mites, although they are small, you can see them crawling. They turn dark after they feed, so a dark spec crawling on my white sheets wouldn't be hard to locate, I would imagine. I am constantly inspecting the bed and the mattress, and no signs of that either.

Also, I read that mites go in your nose/ears, etc and you constantly have a crawling feeling all over your body. I don't have that.

ARGH!

Maybe we are allergic to the same invisible bugs? Lord help us!!!

How often are you getting bit? Is it spaced out like my bites?

I'm starting to look at medical reasons which could be causing the bite like marks/welts that I am getting, but nothing seems to fit. I went to my doctor back in October and he said that it looked like bed bug bites to him.

I just think that if I had bed bugs (and same goes for you) wouldn't they have multiplied a trillion times over by now, and hence, we would be seeing some sort of sign? Surely we can't have hundreds of bugs hiding in our walls that only come out once week as a gang, bite us up, and run away without leaving any trace of evidence.... can we?

If so, lets pray that bed bugs don't evolve. With the ability to do that, they could break into real crime and screw up more than just our sleeping habits... :)

Following kills eggs: Vikane, heat, smashing. Bedlam claims 80% ovicidal rate. Packing up with mothballs or pest strips should kill eggs, especially if left long enough to hatch into poison.
For contact killers, since they all seem to work about the same, use the one that's affordable and most compatible with you and the surface you're treating. Ex, alcohol on fabrics, Murphy on finished surfaces.

Hi Bait,

my matress is quite high off the floor and I do not think it is my bed that is the issue. I haven't been bitten in the last 3-4 weeks, I just find 1 or 2 on my wall or door. However, when I squash them no blood comes out. I really think the main issue is my pine wood door as out of the 10 I have found, 6 of them have been on my door.

Hey Eclaire,

I've been getting bites since the end of August - so about 2 1/2 months now and yes, it is very frustrating indeed! For me it seems that nothing is working at all. The treatments, cleaning, vacuuming, laundry - doesn't even slow down the bites. I still haven't seen a single bug, have no spots, specs or eggs. No other insects have I detected either - no mosquitoes, gnats, fleas, etc.

Yup, these bugs (if it's what it is) are really hard to track down. I think the expression is "they walk a foot above the ground, judging from footprints I have found". At this point I am trying to convince myself that it's something else - but what it could be eludes me completely. Mites? I wash twice a day, and clean all clothes immediately after wearing them on hot, and dry 'em on hot. My bedding is washed twice a week. I was vacuuming every day as of last week, and have gone back to once a week since it wasn't impacting the biting in any way. I'd like to think that the chemicals and residues that have been applied are killing them, but the bites just do not stop. Maybe I'm allergic to invisible bugs? :)

great.

Alas Eclaire there is little it seems we can do when this happens. In my case I have had two dog inspections after my apartment was treated - and no bugs were alerted too. I've scoured my walls, books, items, boxes, etc and found nothing. I sleep on a white bed (protect a bed encasement) with no pillows or the like (and I have no boxspring or frame so it's on the ground) and have never found a spot or spec. I've never found an egg, never seen a bug or shell, or any proof at all - yet the bites continue.

Have you tried to isolate the bed (not that it would help, but if you have something to catch bugs climbing up the frame you may be able to see what's getting you)? Is the bed encased in a bed-bug proof encasement (the bugs may be INSIDE the bed if there are holes or whatnot)?

It is possible that the bites are delayed and coming from somewhere else too. Also, are you the only one reacting in the house hold? (Not that this really matters as some other people may just not be reactors - however if it was something like fleas then I would think that everyone would react, and not just one person).

I've never found harborage, so I have no advice other than to be ready. Make sure you have a contact killer close at hand. Check the spray so you don't experience a release delay.

For eggs, you'll need a vacuum that has good suction and hand attachments.

Good luck!

A lot of posts go through the procedure of inspecting and then discovering a harborage of bb's. These posts always sort of stop short right then and there usually expressing disgust and plans to get a PCO.
If one or two are found the poster often says they just squish them. I'm wondering what to have handy IF and when I should encounter a harborage of several during an inspection. I can't imagine just
recoiing in horror and then letting them stew for days on end until a PCO can accomodate an appointment. That and the fact that if I have disturbed them during an inspectin they may also scatter. Vacuum them up? Spray them? Any ideas please?!

Sorry for the prior post, this site is still a little confusing to me. Thanks so much for the info on mites. I will check this out. I have been thinking I have mites, but nothing I found online fit the description until I saw your post. I have lots of bits, 40 on one arm alone. I get in bed or on my couch I feel like something is swarming my legs but cannot see anything. I keep a spray bottle of 1 part rubbing alcohol/2 parts water near my bed. The spray gets rid of them, what ever they are. I have thought it was bed bugs but see no signs. Today I tore apart my raw wooden platform bed and the landladys old wooden closet....not a sign of bedbugs. Im taking my cat to the vet and insisting on a microscope. Thanks so much.

Paranoid001 - 2 months ago »
The EXACT thing happened to me. I had biopsies done and everything. I had an allergic reaction so mine did itch. SAME places. It was a microscopic mite on the cat they called "moving dander". Guess that's what it looks like? I took one cat to the vet and had them check. They said the cat was clean. I told the guy that I knew there was something on the cat and to check again. In fact, I argued until he checked under a microscope and found the little guy. (I ditched that vet office after that)
Good news is the vet gave the cats each a shot. Mite was gone and I was problem free for years. Give it a thought. I hope that's what you have b/c it's so easy to get rid of.
Take Care,

Nobugs, did we ever hear again from the individual that was working on the C. lect' genome?

Fleas can crawl - especially when they're on the host animal, but are more likely to jump when trying to escape. They jump very high and far.

Long story short....

We've been in our house for over a year with no signs of any bugs other than the occasional spider.

September 27 – 3 bites just down from my armpit
October 3 – 2 bites on my left leg
October 11 – 1 bite on my right hand
October 17 – 3 bites on my right leg
PCO investigated our house – inspected the mattress, drawers, etc. Ran the CDC 3000 for 10 hours and no signs of anything. Put down glue pads all around our bedroom and the only bug we caught were silver fish.
November 11 – 6 bites on my left lower back

Still no sign of feces, blood stains, bugs, nymphs, nothing. On November 11 we put clean white sheets/pillowcases on our bed and havent changed them to date with the hopes that something will show up. Its been a week and NO signs anywhere. We inspect the bed every morning and night.

Made a flea trap and caught no fleas. Checked the dog and cat extensively for fleas, and found no fleas anywhere. When we called PCO again after the last round of bites, they said they thought it was fleas.

Does ANYONE have ANY advice? I feel like I am going nuts.

LOL ^_^

maybe the solution would be to genetically enhance the next generation w/ negative blood to create a BB resistant race. Would also make blood donation a lot easier down the line :)

Hmmm, I am A -ve and they will happily feed from me, I do however not respond to bites.

I also think a complete blood transfusion, bone marrow replacement and genetic engineering is a little extreme even to avoid bed bug bites.
