Apparently bed bugs are still a cute idea for many

The Grand Island, Nebraska Independent reports that the local library’s Children’s Summer Reading Program will feature a story called “Bed Bugs” Tuesday evening:

“Bed Bugs,” at 6:30 p.m. is a family story time where kids can come dressed in their pajamas.

In their pajamas!

Perhaps hot on the heels of the previous day’s book selection, “Caring for Your Pet Bug,” the library may be sending the wrong message to young people.

It’s hard to believe people still think bed bugs are fun, and that this show has not been run off the air by angry mobs.

I guess bed bugs just aren’t big enough yet.

Ahhhh, the 70s.

A time when so few children in North America encountered real bed bugs that this game was not considered creepy.

I especially like that the hopping bed bugs bounce the gentleman’s bed right out of the room.

I remain amazed that this show remains so beloved.

The Simpsons namechecks our little friends

NYJammin watched The Simpsons last Sunday. She, unlike the rest of you, gentle readers, who could have called the Bedbugger hotline but inexplicably chose not to, shared the joy:

Marge was putting baby Maggie to bed. En route to Maggie’s crib, Marge was saying goodnight with the baby to some of the stuffed animals. Last toy was a Krusty Klown doll…

And then it happened. A bona fide bed bug cultural reference on the teevee!

No, not the fake night, night bed bugs of pre-resurgence days, but 2007 bed bugs:

Let’s get into that holiday spirit

There’s nothing worse than bed bugs during the holidays. But we still have to celebrate life, family, and love. Toss in a litte gallows humor (so beloved of Bedbuggers) and you have Bed Bug Holiday Songs:

NotSoSnug has started us off, messaging me with his Christmas carol to the tune of “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”:

Clothing drying in a hot dryer,

Bedbugs nipping at your toes,

Woe-filled tales being sung by newbites,

And folks bagging up their winter clothes.

Everybody knows some DE and pyrethrin,

Help to stop the bed bugs bite,

Paranoid folks with their eyes all a bug

Will find it hard to sleep at night.

They know that BedBugz are on their way,

They’ve got some yummy human blood to taste today,

And every mothers child is going to say,

How did the situation get this way?

And so I’m offering the simple phrase,

To Bedbuggers from everywhere,

Although its been said many times many ways,

Merry Christmas to you.

I’ll start you off with a few ideas:

So my bed bugs bounced right back, and said “Now we are even!”

He sprayed pesticides about

“Grandpa Got Run Over by A Reindeer”

Grandma got bitten by a bed bug

Staying at the casino New Year’s Eve

I am quite sure you can do as well or better at finishing these, or starting a new one, as I can. Hannukah and Kwanzaa songs are a bit thin on the ground, so especially welcome.

Bed bug postage stamps!

Spread the news about bed bugs with an icky postage stamp designed by Gary_Alpert (made with zazzle, which lets you make your own legal US postage stamps).

It’s $14.95 for a sheet of 20, so I don’t expect these to catch on very soon, except maybe as collector’s items for the entomologist in your life.

Burned by bed bugs? A cool vacation idea…

Have you been a cautious traveler since you first met Mr. Cimex Lectularius? Do you long to go on vacation, but the hotel room search for bed bugs gives you the heebie jeebies?

Well, this suggestion is a bit far out. But it might be a good break for people in that situation.

You might even say it’s a cool idea.

Quebec - Ice Hotel

Every year a hotel is built 30 miles from Quebec City, entirely of ice. (They even give you a cocktail in a glass made of ice.) And while there is bedding, it’s on ice and surrounded by ice, which probably sounds appealing to people dreading the hotel mattress check. Have a look in the sleeping bag, all the same!

In all seriousness, I do think traveling after bed bugs is important–the world is a beautiful place, and I hate to see people miss out on what they used to do before bed bugs because of fears they’ll resurface. And yes, I have checked 8-9 hotels so far and seen nothing, and felt no bites, so I do think it is still possible to travel despite the bed bug epidemic.

The ice hotel is open from January 4th to April 1st 2008, and accommodations include furnishings (made of ice), an arctic sleeping bag, and polartec blanket; hot tubs and saunas are available for defrosting. They’re offering a 50% off midweek special if you book now. Check it out!

My Bedbugs

Children’s show “My Bedbugs” now has a 100 million viewers in the US.

As more and more of those kids get bitten by real bed bugs, I bet the producers and merchandisers are wishing they picked another “cute” name for their cuddly trio.

Before I get more angry comments about “My Bedbugs” and how nice and innocent they are, can I remind you people that one of their best friends is a vacuum named J. Egdar Hoover? He says, on mybedbugs.com,

Yeah, I don’t know about cleaning being fun, but a lot of Bedbuggers also use their Hoover or other vacuum cleaner to “teach their bed bugs a lesson every day.”

Only our bed bugs are not so lucky to see the next day, as it appears these happy-go-lucky bedbugs are.

Perhaps the humans in this scenario forgot to seal and dispose of those vacuum cleaner bags? Or perhaps J. Edgar is working on his own and has no arms or hands (or feet, or prosthetic limbs) to remove the bags. In that case, J. Edgar needs to seek out friends or relatives to help him beat his bed bug infestation.

Seal and dispose of those vacuum bags after use. Or “Your Bedbugs” will be back the next day and the next, like those in the TV show. (See? A helpful hint. And you thought this was just another frivolous bit of fun.)
