Breaking Bio podcasters talk with bed bug “sexpert” Mike Siva-Jothy

in bed bug sex, bed bugs

In this podcast, Steven Hamblin and the rest of the lively Breaking Bio podcast crew chat with University of Sheffield Professor (and bed bug expert) Mike Siva-Jothy about bed bug sex, small glass models of insect genetalia, and some possible reasons why pubic lice are not as prevalent as in times past.

Bed bugs’ traumatic insemination is endlessly fascinating to many, though repulsive. (Isabella Rossellini may be rare among humans in finding it titillating.)

Traumatic insemination often comes up in news articles about bed bugs and our own Bedbugger forums. Pubic lice have also, um, sprung up in the forums now and again.

This podcast was new to me but very interesting and amusing.  I think you’ll enjoy it too– whether you’re a student of bugs by choice or by accident.

Thanks, Bug_Girl, for drawing our attention to the podcast!

Update (12/4):

Edited to correct embarrassing misspellings of “pubic”– I can fully blame my iPad’s aggressive auto-”correction” for the errors but can only blame myself for not catching them in my proofreading. Those of you with iDevices are no doubt nodding your heads.

Many thanks again to the helpful readers who alerted me.
