NBC4 reports that employees at the Circleville Care and Rehabilitation Center in central Ohio claimed the nursing home kept the center’s bed bugs a secret from patients’ families:
They claimed management threatened them with termination should anyone notify the media. They also claimed that families of patients were not being told about the problem.
The director of the Pickaway County Health Department confirmed the presence of bedbugs at the rehab center but said that was all they could do because the bugs did not carry any diseases.
Although the management might worry that their reputation would be tarnished by the presence of bed bugs, this is a problem everywhere. Bed bugs can affect any nursing home (just like any other medical facility or public place).
It is important to notify those who have visited recently, so they can check their own homes. Anyone could have brought the problem in without realizing it.
Similarly, current visitors will need to be made aware of the problem so they can exercise caution.
The article says the nursing home has notified families as well as the state health department, and has been having the center treated by a pest control firm.
