This is heartbreaking.
Police aren’t yet sure what killed the man who was found lying in an apartment “full of bed bugs” this week in Albuquerque, New Mexico. KOAT reports that
Albuquerque police said they found a man’s body in an apartment infested with bedbugs on Wednesday, and now the complex might be facing trouble with the city.
The Safe City strike force said Uptown Park Apartments on Indian School has had a bedbug infestation since spring, and that there are other code violations. The apartment manager said he admits there is a problem, and they’re shelling out thousands of dollars to fix it.
KOAT notes that 20 of the building’s 230 units had bed bugs last March, and only three still have bed bugs.
However, I have some concerns about how the complex assessed the success of their treatment program.
KOB News reports that the Uptown Park manager said that the deceased man had treatment for bed bugs and was later asked in writing if the problem was gone, and replied in writing that it was.
Note to apartment managers: don’t ask in writing (or on the phone) if an infestation is cleared. Residents may not be sure or may be resistant to treatment. Get the unit carefully inspected by an experienced professional.
This is a really awful story. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the deceased.
And I hope all residents of this complex are bed bug-free soon.
