Some of you may remember that back in 2008, a musical called Bedbugs!!! enjoyed a brief run in the New York Musical Theater Festival.
The show may have simply been before its time, in 2008, but if ever New Yorkers were ready for a bed bug musical, it’s now.
You have the chance to hear songs from the show performed for one night only tonight at 9:30 p.m. at the Laurie Beechman Theatre, 42nd Street and 9th Avenue.
Songs from ‘Bedbugs!!!’—a science fiction, thriller, comedy rock-musical—will be performed Wednesday night at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. Composer Paul Leschen, 36, and lyricist and book writer Fred Sauter, 31, are hoping the one-night-only concert spawns interest and that someone will bite at the opportunity to take the show big time.
‘We’re chomping at the bit to get this show up,’ said Mr. Leschen. ‘If we end up spending our meager life savings on it, then so be it.’
Messrs. Leschen and Sauter are self-producing Wednesday’s concert, with tickets priced at $20 with a $15 drink minimum. Songs from their other original musicals will also be performed. They have planned for a limited run of ‘Bedbugs!!!’ in February in Williamsburg.
Leschen and Sauter promise the show has a cathartic effect, as audience members who may have themselves been victims of bed bugs get to see bed bugs “get their comeuppance.”
And we all do love that!
Alan Good talks to Leschen and Sauter in this edition of his Global War on Bedbugs column in McSweeney’s.
