Besides wreaking havoc on cinema-goers at the AMC Empire 25 this week, bed bugs have also been plaguing more city offices.

Bed bug treatments went on from Monday through Wednesday this week on floors 4 through 7 of the New York City office building at 151 W. Broadway in Tribeca (including the city’s Office of Child Support Enforcement and Human Resources Administration), according to FoxNY. As a precaution, the building’s third-floor courtrooms were also treated.

The infestation was detected last Thursday, and confirmed by a canine unit on Friday.

After only three days of treatment, Fox reports that a city spokeswoman has now proclaimed the building “bed bug free”.

Note: unfortunately, most bed bug treatment methods do not eliminate bed bugs in one treatment; it is therefore unlikely that the building is now “bed bug free”.

As a precaution against what? Don’t PCOs refuse to treat if they don’t see evidence? Is “as a precaution” an attempt to reassure people that they need not fear visiting the “public” areas of this building?

They probably should refuse to treat without evidence…the first one I used didn’t find anything but treated anyway, and did the same for my neighbors. I’m sure there are plenty of PCOs that are happy to treat away regardless of findings…

The reporter working on my story told me that Gale Brewer says all or most gov buildings in Manhattan are infested, but the press does not know or care…

So I hear my story will be out on Wednesday, 25 August.
