in bed bugs, mattresses

This week, we’re running a contest on Bedbugger!

The lucky winner will get one set of two Protect-a-Bed AllerZip mattress encasements (your choice of size); the pair of encasements is intended for use on a single bed (one encasement for the mattress, one for the box spring).*

Bedbugger Forums user John Furman, of pest control firm Boot-a-Pest in New York (also known on the site under his handle KillerQueen) is donating the prize.

I (site admin, nobugsonme) will select the winner using the random number generator here, to avoid bias.

How to enter: leave a single comment on this post.

(Please do not add extra comments, or use this space for discussion. You may discuss the contest in this forum thread.)

You need to register for the site and login in order to leave a comment on this post. (Though normally this is not the case, I am temporarily disabling anonymous comments to ensure every entrant has included an email address.)

(Residents of USA and Canada only please! Void where prohibited.)

The winner will be chosen randomly from entries received before midnight EST on Thursday 1/7/2010.

I (nobugsonme) will then email the winner at the email they used to register for the site.**

You will have 24 hours to respond to my email, giving me permission to forward your name and mailing address to John Furman, who will be responsible for providing and shipping your prize to you. If you don’t respond within 24 hours, or your email address bounces back, I will use the same method to choose an alternate winner.

We will announce the winner’s username, but neither John or myself will share your real name or address with anyone else. (Obviously, please do not use your real name as your username).

I ask that you please do not enter the contest if you work in the pest management, pest detection, or pest product business.  Please do not use multiple accounts to enter the contest. (It’s the honor system!  Please be honorable!)

Disclaimer: we’re doing this for fun and we reserve the right to change anything if we have to – but be assured we really do want to give away this prize!

Many thanks to John Furman of Boot-a-Pest (a.k.a. KillerQueen) for donating the prize!

Good luck to everyone!

*Yes, Protect-a-Bed also makes box spring encasements, but John prefers the mattress encasements be used for both box and mattress, and so that’s what he is awarding the winner.

Update (1/8/2010):

The lucky winner was #21: KombatKat.

This is a screenshot of the random number generator, having generated the number:

KombatKat, Congratulations! Please carefully follow the instructions in the email I have sent to the address in your user profile, in order to claim your prize!

KillerQueen, thanks again for generously donating the prize!

I was wondering if I should replace the box spring encasement on my box spring with a mattress encasement? The ones I have on my mattress and box spring are both made by Protect-a-bed, but I have noticed the encasement for the box spring tears easier and I have had to patch it. Is that why killerqueen recommends using the mattress encasement on the box spring?

Thanks for the help!

Admin note: diebbsdie, I believe it is KillerQueen’s opinion that the mattress encasements are more durable and he prefers them for both the mattress and box. If you wish to discuss this further, please do so in the forums thread here.

Thanks again to Keller Queen and Nobuggs for this contes opportunity. very nice!

I really need one of these. Another one. PCOs and cats keep destroying them. Thanks for having a contest– I hope my luck holds strong 🙂

I could really use this. I just found out I have bedbugs and am in a bit of a panic. I’ve always had a cover on my mattress, but it’s flimsy and rips. Unfortunately thats what’s in the budget. I’m crossing my fingers on this one!

I thought KQ was opposed to encasements. What prompted the change in philosophy?

Admin’s response: cilecto, I know David Cain is not a fan of encasements, but I did not get this impression from KQ. Please feel free to discuss this on the forum thread!

Post-infestation I got a mattress encasement for my new bed, but perhaps foolishly decided against the encasement for the box spring, under the theory that I want to make it easy to find the bugs if they come back and that it would be easier to toss the box spring out than the mattress. Could use the new encasements!

Admin’s response: floored, box springs are bad news. Destroying and tossing them out is not a bad idea. But keeping an unencased box spring is (in my opinion) a bad idea. To discuss further, please come to the forums thread!

I have also only bought an encasement(the cheap waterproof kind?) for the mattress on the bed we are using that we moved from our old apt to my mom’s. There has never been any activity around this mattress as no one was ever sleeping or hanging around in the extra bedroom.. we have not encased box spring… We are moving to a new house ina month and buying a new bed sooo I need to win one bad! 🙂

19 ghostbitten January 4, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Ooh definitely enter me! While my encasement works good for now, my mother does not have one and said that since “I don’t like the bugs (she can live with them, apparently)” I have to buy her one. With all the prep etc, I can’t afford a 50$ encasement :3

Awesome on the contest, though! <33

20 bugsbugme January 4, 2010 at 11:02 pm

Perfect timing, am just in the middle of deciding what kind I should get.

21 KombatKat January 5, 2010 at 12:01 am

Found a bedbug on my pillow this morning. Freaking out a bit while I wait to hear when the pest control people can come. I’m a student with limited funds, so I’d rather not have to buy this stuff myself. Enter me, please!

Me, too!

31 ThisBItes January 6, 2010 at 11:47 am

I want to win but partly because my mom is badly infested now and in denial with a new bed that I’d like to protect for her. She doesn’t have access to the internet and her landlord keeps on spraying weekly with obviously ineffective stuff and refuses to think of moving or taking necessary precautions. Thanks for the donate KillerQueen!

32 darwinsmug January 6, 2010 at 12:50 pm

Count me in, too! Our building has them and they’re spreading like wildfire!

33 SleepingTight January 6, 2010 at 1:07 pm
