Fifth and Broadway, according to this photo would be the Avenues that intersect here, which is the corner of Broadway and 23rd Street, incidentally, the SW corner of Madison Square Park. That sure does look like a lot of mattresses, and it boggles the mind to wonder where they came from. There are very few residential buildings on that side of the park. If anything, the closest residential building is on 23rd and Broadway, but completely across 23rd street with the entrance being on 22nd Street.
23rd Street is a two-way, and you’ve got Broadway and Fifth Avenue on the other side (the side from where the photo was taken). Behind the mattresses is Madison Square Park. So, WHERE did these come from? Very, very mysterious indeed.
They do appear to be wrapped in plastic. If you click the photo and then choose “All sizes” to enlarge to the highest resolution, they appear to be new mattresses wrapped in plastic. And yes, like galigaga, I find their appearance in such a busy spot very mysterious.
