Progress, sort of: Times on pestilence in the UK

Last week or so, I was complaining when the Times (UK, not New York) ran a story about how bed bugs are taking over Los Angeles. As if they were not also taking over the UK.
This week, they’ve gone a step further, with Michele Kirsch’s three-page story on how Britain is “Infested” (not just with bed bugs, mind you). The author herself is added to the illustrious roster of journalists who have had bed bugs.
And while, yes, it does appear so that women are more apt to be allergic to bed bugs than men are (and I admit my evidence is purely anecdotal and based on our site’s hundreds of thousands of visitors), I balked after reading the story (which was otherwise pretty good) to discover it was in the “Women” section, which is a subset of the “Life & Style” section.
Hmmm. Still more work to be done, Times editors.

Hi Nobugs, thought you might be interested (and encouraged) to know that although the article was in the life & style/women’s section of Times Online in the actual paper it was published in the magazine supplement in Saturday’s printed paper. It was listed under features in the index and was also headlined ‘Inside Infested Britainn’ on the front cover. So at least the published version was very much aimed at a general readership. Incidentally there was also an ‘All you need to know about …..bedbugs’ article in one of the UK celebrity gossip magazines a few weeks ago. I don’t remember ever reading articles specifically about bedbugs in general interest type publications until recently, and now I have come across two within a few weeks. I’m so thankful this is being openly featured.
