do you only get bed bugs by laying on the bed?

You can get bed bugs from anywhere. The laundry-mat, someone’s vehicle, another person’s apartment, any piece of furniture with upholstry on it. Read through the fqa’s, lots of good information on this site.

Hi,
I’m wondering if I have bed bugs. I took apart my mattress and found a few dead bug skins, but none were as round nor as large as the photos of bed bugs on this website. I did not find any feces or eggs. I found two small bites above my knee this afternoon. If I really have bed bugs, should I expect to find many more bites on myself and more insect remains in my bedding?

If you only have had two bites, there may be other explanations besides bed bugs. Or you could have been bitten elsewhere (since we’re told bites take up to 9 days to appear, though most people seem to notice them sooner).
Look carefully at this page: first and second instar nymphs are much smaller than adults.
I would also keep inspecting other parts of your home. If bites continue, I’d get a professional in to search (perhaps with a bed bug dog).
