The NYTimes is back on the bed bugs story

Featured in this article from tomorrow’s New York Times is Lou Sorkin, the American Museum of Natural History entomologist who is a member of the yahoo group Bedbugger, from which this blog sprang. Also featured is Michael Potter of the University of Kentucky, who is mentioned in several recent posts here at Bedbugger.
The article does a good job of updating the bed bug epidemic in NYC. It also features a “what to do once you’re bitten” related article that explains landlord / co-op / condo and legal issues related to bedbugs. NYC residents should read that too.

So now that we know that they are spreading like wildfire, how about bringing the availability of DDT in small quanties
back to the US for ridding our homes, colleges, hotels, cruise ships of the horrible little critters.
It was the spraying of tons of it on fields that caused the problem. But if only sold in small quantities for inside use,
(I doubt farmers would be able to afford purchasing 10,000 2 lb packages for their fields), it could help stop this invasion.
Otherwise the bed bug epidemic WILL happen. Hotels and Cruise Lines are already feeling the ‘bite’ in their income.

I agree 100%.
I think it is inevitable that DDT will have to be used again.
I only hope we don’t have to wait until the US senators _and_ Oprah are all infested before someone takes action on this issue.
